To the Makers of Things, Show us what you do!

Thanks John!

I never feel right showing my “wares” in another maker’s forum. I was thinking more along the lines of this…

About a decade ago, I was contacted by a lady who inherited her grandmother’s piano. It had been in the family for over 100 years. All the women in her family had learned to play on this particular piano. She was requesting to have a foyer table made out of it, as the sound board had cracked and was beyond repair.

I accepted the challenge and the piano was dropped off at my property and I went to work on disassembling the upright piano. Let me tell you…cast soundboards are screaming heavy.

After sparing all the parts I could, I decided the best plan of attack was to figure out how to ONLY use the material from the piano, save pin nails and glue and a piece of glass. I was not to refinish any of the wood, to leave in said condition so to speak.

I was given full artistic licence and she did not want to know what the plans were.
It took me three years and a lot of stress…but this is what I came up with. A 16” deep, 34” wide, standard height one-of-a-kind foyer table (if I remember correctly)

I found out the keys are Ivory…so they must be show cased!!

She was thrilled. That’s good enough for me. :)

The photo on the table was taken on my property with her and her two son’s and was a surprise with the table. :)
Feel free to show any of your wares here, I feel the same way about posting in other peoples houses but you're more than welcome to post your leatherwork or anything else. I don't consider it stepping on my toes, I don't operate like that.

That piano is epic! That's a piece the family will cherish forever I'm sure. Very tastefully done.

The wife jsut finished off this personalized duffel bag. Black water buffalo is the body leather and the straps are water buffalo belt leather.

What a great bag, knowing how that leather feels I can imagine how nice that must be in hand. That's gonna develop some awesome "pull up" with use too.

Yes it is a great one with great leather. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around its made inside out and then turned right side out when done! I’d be busting seams and zippers trying that.

Coleman that is indeed an epic foyer table. Why do the keys have to be encased?

Thank you, Dave. Very kind of you.

Are you asking why they are under glass in a shadow box style, Dave?
If so, everything under the glass is in 3D multiple levels, so if I didn’t put the glass in, it would be tough to use as a table.

If that’s not what you are asking, I apologize.

Are you asking why I did not have the “frame” level with the “upper portion” behind the keys?
I could have done it like that…would have left an 8” ledge I suppose.

I guess the only explanation I have is artistic expression. 🤣😂

No really I was wondering if that was some kind of ivory protection law or something that I hadn't heard of that it had to be encased. I was thinking man there has got to be lots of cabinet maker types making bank cause every piano in the world made prior to WW2 was gonna have ivory keys. Your project came out great! My father was given a Steinway baby grand right after WW2. It had belonged to a Japanese American lady that was a concert pianist. She'd spent the war in an interment camp and rented out her home. The folks had lots of parties and there were multiple drink rings etc all over the piano, basically ruined. The lady was heartbroken and gave it to my father, as she knew he was a woodworker and might be able to refinish it. I can remember helping him move it several times. Usually took 5 or 6 guys. It was heavy! He never did get around to refinishing it and I have no idea what happened to it.

Ok. It all makes sense now. Haha. To answer that question, the ivory does not need to be encased. Not here in Canada, and I haven’t hear a rule like that anywhere else either. :)

Ya, grands and baby grands are tough ones to move without proper equipment. The one I disassembled was an upright so my wife and I moved it into the shop by ourselves. Used thre 4 inch “thick walled” PVC pipes and kinda just rolled it in there.

I enjoy your stories and life experiences very much. Thank you for sharing, Dave.

Drink rings on a piano is just wrong.

Specially a Steinway! Thanks. My dad told me the piano was delivered by one guy! Said he was very large.

If I recall correctly (spelling may be wrong), the one the table is made from was a Henzman? Heinzman? I’d have to see if I had a photo still.

Anywho…lol.

Heintzman, one more guess and you would have had it. My folks have one. They are popular in Canada. Amazing table you did.

My own personal Ruger Vaquero Old Model in .45LC. This one has a couple zillion of horseback miles with me. Use to do a lot of horsepacking in big bear country and this one with heavy loads was my side arm of choice in those days.

Yes! That’s it. I thought it had a “t” but wasn’t 100% sure.

Thank you for your kind words. Much appreciated.
I’ve seen some killer work from you as well. :)
