To the Makers of Things, Show us what you do!

I made this tooling/clamping plate and a set of clamps that sees literally hundreds of different uses in my shop. Its incredibly versatile and handy. I couldn't do without it.

That's a nice set up, I need to rig something like that up. Are those clips G10?

G-1O as a JIG material. I can do that   So much of this kind of stuff stumps me because I'm not really set up for metal work.
I can handle G-10. Thanks for the tip.

That's the best part. It drills, sands, files and machines like a dream yet it is far from "soft" and is NOT delicate at all.

It's fairly heat resistant and extremely stable. It doesn’t warp/twist, expand or shrink.

I use it for jigs and tooling all the time.

I even regularly make pocket clips for folders out of it and have lots of positive feedback on it in that application.

Amboyna burl is just so damn pretty.

Hey John, J. Doyle J. Doyle might you have some advice as to the most useful thickness go G10 as a jig material?
Thinking, for a clamp rig like you show or other useful tools you might have made. Is there a min. /max . beyond practical?

Thank you.

I'd refer to John on that one but I would guess a 3/8" plate would be ideal to give you plenty of threads but don't know if that would be necesary. I wouldn't think you'd need more than 1/4" for the clamps. You could probably go thinner depending on what you were using it for.

It depends on what you're making but for that tooling plate I used 3/8" and 1/4" for the clamps. So Redmeadow Knives Redmeadow Knives nailed it.

I made a little vise for holding small parts where I used 1" thick for one side and 3/8" for the other jaw.

Like I said....it just depends. If you think of anything specific, I would be happy to offer my input/opinions.

Thank you both. I'll place an order and see what I come up with for jigs over the winter. Funny I just never thought of the G10 option. My go to is aluminum plate or baltic birch ply - both have their uses and limitations. Good to have an option.

I don't have anything big enough for a plate but I think I have some pieces big enough for clamps. If I do I'll get them your way.

RayseM RayseM These are 1/4" x 3/4" x 6" Green/tan and Gray/black layers G10, might look weird but the price is right lol. I'll get them your way if you want them. I have some pink that are wider but you'd have to fight my daughter for those!

That stuff looks awesome on a pen. I've seen it on knives and it was a bit too busy for me but it looks great turned!

Thanks John, don't think it would work on a knife. Stuff is a bit too soft, you're right does look good on a pen.

John - I couldn't care less about the colors. Jigs will be happy with whatever I get. You are right - the price is right. I am very grateful for whatever you choose to send.  AND - yes, let's not deprive your daughter of any favorites. Thank you very much.

Sounds good, I'll pack it up and try to get it out tomorrow Ray.

I've been using a piece of paperstone mounted on the table on the mini-mill but the clamp I use can get in the way of the chuck and limits it's range. I bet I can drill and tap that paperstone to accept some bolts and install some of those little clamps.20220208_171403-01.jpeg

I will do much the same. I have quite a few versions of those Besseys. The base has always been an issue but thinking now that I can thread my holes opens up lots of options. I feel like a dummy for never having thought of it.
