To use or not to use? A tricky question!

I am pretty new to knife collecting and I have been back and forth on which knives should stay in the "NIB category" and which should be reaiil used. I have trouble putting to hard use a $500 Busse, or a $500 Strider. But on the flip side. There is a real shame in having such a great functioning knife and not using it to it's full potential, and reaping it's full bennifits. The same goes with some of the higher end tactical knives suck as merc werx and many others. HOW DO YOU GUYS DECIDE? AND WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE BETWEEN FUNCTIONAL AND COLLECTIBLE?

I won't buy a knife if I do not intend to use it. I sometimes don't get around to using every one but they are all bought to use.

If you buy a Busse take it out and beat on it that's what their made for. Then you can send it in to Busse and they'll make it look brand new if you decide thats what you want.
And the cleanup price is very minimal. So go beat your Busse!;)

Yep no safe queens here. I use them all. It's one of the reasons I do a LOT of research before I buy a knife. I have had very few "whim" purchases... and as an aside they are the ones that collect dust and don't tend to get used :( I have lost a couple of $150+ knives and it hurt. I currently carry several knives that are worth more $300 - $450. I'm certainly not rich so when I buy a high dollar item it has to be functional, bring me enjoyment for a lot of years and last forever. I don't have money to waste on something I just look at safe in a box and don't really get to enjoy.

I have neither the cash nor space to have a large collection of safe queens. All of my blades are mid range, bang for the buck users. YMMV

the nicest knife i own is a sebenza, exact knife in my avatar, and it is a user, to me if you buy a sebenza, strider, busse, and dont use it than all the effort that went into it would be in vein, i say use it! :D

Many moons ago when I was younger I just bought them and placed them in a display case and showed them off. I was always scared to use them and never wanted to mark them in any way. now - everything I buy is used and tested to the fullest for a period of time and then I pass it on to a friend and buy another new user.

I use my Busses and Striders.

Unless it's a rare blade or a expensive Limited Edition like my NMFBM LE.

In that case do dou guys think I should start off with a lower end (price wise not Quality wise) knife. Something like ESSE , Cold Steel, or Ontario and move into a higher end knife (again, Pricewise) like Busse and strider?

Can I be your friend :D

Unless you plan to sell them down the road, use them. Why spend that much money on an item and keep it in a box until you die, just to regret never using it.

I would say yes because it will make you really appreciate the higher quality knives like Busse and Strider.

If you start out with the high end you will never really know how good they really are when compared to the others on the market.

And yes they really are that good. ;)

Yes, start with a few entry level knives, figure out what you like and what you need. Then move up when your ready, or stay at that high value level. Just because a large double lug Micarta 21 Sebenza cost $500 does not mean it really does anything five times as good as a nice Spyderco, Kershaw, Buck, Case, Queen, ESEE... ect..

Some people really get a kick out of high value knives, I gotta tell you I LOVE my CV Case Soddie jr, and SE ZDP Delica.

Truth be told, you can find a ton a really servicable knives under $50, bump that up to $100 and you can afford some of the highest value knives this industry has ever seen

Before you buy anything go to the makers website and read the Warranty!!!!!!

Especially if you plan on really using the knives... ;)

Some markers warranties will be voided if you do anything other than clean your fingernails and open mail with them or look at them wrong....
