To use or not to use? A tricky question!

Who has a warranty like that

I don't want to start a flame war but it starts with an S....

Spyderco Warranty
Spyderco knives are designed and built for use as cutting tools. Use of our knives for any purpose other than cutting is considered abuse. As with any tool Spyderco knives can wear out. They may also fail to perform if not used or cared for properly. If your knife has been put to hard use for a long period of time, it is possible that the useful life of the Spyderco product has been exceeded and Spyderco will be unable to perform any work upon the knife that will improve the condition thereof.

Slicing cheese, cleaning your fingernails and opening mail.... ;)

Hard use isn't covered....

Just use them!
The only excuse for keeping a pristine knife in the safe is if it's a back-up, or you plan on selling.
Or if it's an "art knife", I suppose, although I'd still use it.:)

i have too many to use all of them. i probably only use about 30 knives & just fondle the rest. guess you would say i'm in a good place

Hardly. LOL

Theirs is you break it or anything happens they will fix it no questions asked. ;)

To me, a knife is a tool, and the sole reason I'm carrying a tool is to use it.

I don't have 'ornamental' or 'display' tools. They all work as required.

The pleasure is in using to complete the task, cleaning and re-holstering.

I had some knives when I was kid that were lost, stolen, broken, or worn out. I replaced these with identical models. I don't use them much (they rust), but they bring back a flood of good memories. The rest of my knives are users. Back up knives are potential users. I sometimes buy knives that I don't like because the price was right and I can flip them. Many of the knives that now get less use have been superseded by slightly improved models. It's not a game.

Aside from a few limited editions and the one knife passed down to me by my father, everything is in the "OK to use" category. That doesn't necessarily mean they all get used - there are a lot of them and I have knives I favor for EDC, so others don't see much pocket time. In some cases, the knives don't get used because I'm not too fond of them but simply haven't gotten around to selling them yet.

Contacted Strider and said "send me a new pivot; I'll pay for it"...they said "send it in."
So I fixed it myself, rather than spend the cash for shipping, plus a new pivot, plus the possibility of losing it at the border.
I did the same with Spyderco, and the sent me new pivot free of charge.
It depends on what warranty work you need done.:)

Use them - that's what they're made for.

I will not buy a knife to let it sit.

Warranty be damned.

Most of my knives are purchased for the purpose of lookin' at or fondling. Of course they're completely functional knives and there's no reason they couldn't be used if I chose to.

But if I need a knife for using I'll buy two, one to use and one to add to the stash. :D

Yeah, Strider doesn't want people working on their knives, been way too many people that really messed them up doing that.

That's why they want you to send them in.

Yeah, but now they charge you for any issues which they deem the result of tinkering, so there's no valid reason for not sending a part, especially a part which is non-critical dimension-wise like a pivot, the exact same pivot they put in all the SmF's and SnG's.

Josh said something about hand fitting and possible needed adjustments also that they will do when you send them in.

They are hand fitted knives, not mass produced stamped out stuff.

But yeah I do understand what you said. :)

Recently started carrying my only 'Safe-Queen' - a Benchmade 520 that I was too scared to carry around for fear of losing a knife that had cost me almost $200 CAD (not much for some of you, but that's about three times the cost of my next most-expensive knife ). Got a lot of enjoyment out of using a knife that really seemed to be a cut above what I usually carry (various Kershaw linerlocks and framelocks...they work extremely well, but no 'premium steels' or anything of the sort among them). Now I definitely regret leaving it in a drawer for so long.

I'd be carrying it now, but one of the omega springs is shot, so it's back to Benchmade for repair.

tl;dr: I get a lot more enjoyment out of knives that I use than knives I leave tucked away, be they expensive or not-so-expensive. YMMV.
