Todays score, check it out

nope, all 3ph. thay did have a 3hp 3ph. but why 3hp when i can have 5hp water proof motor. i will keep my eyes open for 1ph.

a 3.5 hp motor is easier to find a controller for. Much cheaper too. Have you checked out how much that motor is worth?? BIG BUCKS....great score.

Great score......Now that I am back working for Mom at the scrap yard I have been finding all kinds of cool trinkets for the shop...Had a customer give me that 12" X 8' X .25 AmerAlloyA5 I also found 2 hand cranked forge blowers the other day..

Gotta love scrap yards,Spring is always the best time to find cool stuff as people are cleaning up old junk piles.

JT, I may have to take you up on your offer, I need to come out and visit my brother in Springville. Though (:DMy scarp yard:D) (deker:mad: insert here) is pretty good too though, the tool steels you have a much better selection on.

I dont know if the A5 will work for knife blades but I figured I could use it for guards...I looked it up and it says it will harden, but I dont know.....

I am very curious why these are so cheap, the thought of stolen property even crossed my mind, it is weird to see stuff like this so inexpensive.

5HP will prolly require something like 100A to run off a single phase and have 5% efficiency :)

JT - if the motor is a 3phase 240V 5HP, the VFD will cost a small fortune I am afraid, unless you can get one for $20 at the same store :) . Also, you might have serious problems finding a 5HP VFD that takes in a single phase. You will most likely need a 3 phase input.

Otherwise, it is a pretty sweet deal ! :)

You can find a VFD that will run 5hp and larger on single phase. They will run $500+ However if you get one, it can run all the 3ph motors in the shop as long as they are under the max rating. They do not advertise them but you need to get a larger capacity 7.5hp or 10hp VFD. A good friend of mine runs his shop (full machine shop) including 7.5hp lathe and a 5hp cnc mill on VFD's single in 3ph out. He has no 3ph power at all since it is in his garage.

Another option is getting a rotary inverter, now this will be a small fortune $1200+ and you will still need to buy a VFD if you wanted variable speed.

i have 220 so im going to get one for that. i can use my stove outlet. does a 220v vfd need a neutral? these are not stolen. its a surplus store that gets stock from overstock, insurance, and any company that is going out. the building is biger than a cosco.

ok, I have to find one of these in Vancouver!

JT,You may need to go back and do some calculations, but I don't think you can run a 5HP3Ph motor on a range outlet.....
The largest circuit I have seen for a range is a 220V50A circuit. That is some major power, and takes some good size wiring.About 75% is the suggested draw, IIRC, so you could draw about 37.5 amps on a circuit that large. That would supply a 5Hp motor, but if you were running a VFD and a 3 phase converter, it probably would not supply enough power.
