Tom & Jerry act Good or Bad ? your opinions please

Nick...

you make my point quiet well, it is chatter and not germane to the learning goal.. it entertains yes, and waste time. the best teachers I had were the no nonsense-here is what you need to learn ones..not the comedians..

also.. it seems to me that Tom and Jerry often insert their nonsense in serious threads and distract the readers from the issue at hand.. my most entertaining profs were often those that knew least about their discipline.. we laughed then..and had to learn it later when we were embarassed that we had not.

how about a forum called "shop small talk" for Tom and Jerry..

I get a kick out of both. I just want free
tickets when they go on stage!

I love the Tom & Jerry show, especially when they decide to drag everyone into a disgusting barbecue thread or pick on Rob Simonich for his Talonite Mercedes.

If people aren't interested in a thread, just move on! I personally ignore most o the threads concerned with finding 200x900 grinder belts or whatever, but I enjoy the humour as well as the informative threads.

I think it's great to see these guys having a little fun & living these Forums up. Far too often, I see people here taking themselve too seriously & making this a dull place. I believe that these Forums are not only for information, but to be enjoyed. Just my opinion, Doug.

samwereb and wro,
I respect you guys for having the guts to champion a point of view that appears to be shared by approximately 2 percent of the forum readership, but somehow my lightning fast (ha!) POS 56k modem seems to handle the additional bandwith emanating from Tom and Jerry just fine. If I want to learn, and fight to stay awake at the same, I'll re-enroll in some of those riveting differential equation courses I took in school. If I want to learn, and have a little fun at the same time, I'll come here. Come on guys, lighten up, a little levity never killed anyone.

wro, to suggest that you can't have a sense of humor and be competent in your chosen profession at the same time, is pretty silly, IMHO. Anyone who would doubt Tom and/or Jerry's qualifications to dispense advice on matters pertaining to knifemaking, need only visit their respective websites, and I'm confident their fears will quickly be put to rest.

samwereb, I don't mean to be insulting, but I think you reveal your true colors when you insinuate that anyone who "stoops" to answer a question from someone less knowledgeable than they are, demeans themself in the process. How absurd. Seems to me that you're the one who's forgotten the purpose of this forum.

Well golly gee whiz, If we are going to vote, I want to amend the motion. I motion that each and every one but the definitive knife making book of their own choosing, quit reading this forum and let the good ol' boys in this obviously exclusive professional knifemakers private joke forum have it to themselves.
Do I have a second?

BTW, I do enjoy the banter.

i think it's funny, and it's good to have a laugh. i also feel that since all, or most questions that can be answered, do get answered so if you don't like it, just don't read the post. their jokes are usually in only a few posts at a time.

Nick said it well. Anyone who doesn't think this is all shop talk needs to unlock their shop door and let the rest of the world in once in a while.

Tom and Jerry perk up my morning coffee every day and if I should ever be so lucky, they are sure welcome in my shop too.

WRO and samwereb - you guys are welcome too. Bring your sense of humour and I'll bring my notebook. Maybe we can all learn.

My wife keeps asking me what I am laughing about. I say its Tom and Jerry again! You guys are part of this forum. Dont ever leave. I also get good answers for sometimes mundane questions from these two. Thanks for your help,I look up to both of you. Bruce

and the readers have voted, I can choose to read on or quit. there is a lot to learn on the forums.. just felt the BS was unnecessary...

and this a big and... teasing and joking is most often the surface traits of the passive agressive or folks with other hangups.. how about it Furniture Guys...do you "really" like each other?????

hope this small sample of the readers does not encourage more of the same nonsense...

Count me among those who like to have some lightness and fun in the forum. If you don't want to "waste your time" on such an ninsignificant thing as humor, skip the thread.

I for one enjoy the jokes. These guys make fun of each other as only good friends can. I guess that if someone can't understand that it may be because they don't have any close friends. I read these post a lot and reply or post myself very seldom. If I read enough of them I can usually find someone who has already ask my dumb questions for me.

Keep up the good work Tom & Jerry 98% of us enjoy some humor. I personally wouldn't consider buying a knife from a maker who is not a friendly type of person. They say we knifemakers put a little bit of our souls into each knife we make and I just don't need any negativity in my life or my knives.

One more thing,,As to how much Tom&Jerry like each other,I don't know either of them but the way they act reminds me of My 3 best freinds here in Florida and Myself.Do I really like them? You bet,one of them is my hunting partner, you've got to really like someone to spend days isolated in the woods with and not want to kill them.I can be the butt of thier jokes and them mine, then sit down enjoy a cigar and have a serious coversation.By the way two of them are named Tom,,,,maybe all Toms are that way

I don't have a problem with it. As I've said before, we knifemakers have to have a little humor in our lives.
When they quit answering your questions because of the jokes and such, then it might be a problem. That ain't gonna happen.
Lighten up.

Oh, okay, I've got it now, everyone with a sense of humor is gay. Thanks for enlightening us even further wro. Do you come up with all this material yourself, or do you employ a team of comedy writers. And to think that you came on here to speak out against nonsensical posting. Kind of ironic isn't it?

If I'm correct in assuming that those letters you go by stand for "whining room only", may I suggest a quick trip over to that brand new forum in the Community section. There's a few friends that hang out over there too. They have names like Tim and Tom and Phil. They'll really appreciate your views on folks with a sense of humor. Good luck. I'm sure they'll take real good care of you.

wro: "teasing and joking is most often the surface traits of the passive agressive or folks with other hangups"

Seems you are passing sentence...I know you did not level this explicitly at Tom and Jerry but that is certainly the implication. This is the sort of statement that I feel is unwise on your part.

I've been in many a volunteer position where the very folks you volunteer to help come along and feel that they have a right to demand anything they want...never saying thank you once. You must realize that the knifemakers of this forum are volunteering time to answer questions about their craft for the rest of us. They don't have to, they don't need to, and they might decide not to. You've got to realize who you are talking to. They are part of the fabric of this forum and I for one am glad that they are around. And please don't tell me that this is a good ol' boys club...I am not yet a knifemaker and have never met any of the folks on this forum personally nor have I exchanged many emails, but I don't feel on the outside. Your remark was only because you didn't get the response you wanted. The forum is here because guys like Darrel, Tom, Jerry, Kit, and many others take the time to give YOU and me the information we request (thanks again guys). They don't get paid anything to do it and you don't pay a dime! Hang around...you'll get your information, but don't be so critical and condesending toward the folks who volunteer this information.

I apologize in advance if this comes off wrong...but I detest this attitude and being on the receiving end of it before could not contain myself.

The only thing I don't like about the Tom and Jerry Show is when I unexpectedly blow hot coffee out my nose at 6:00am! I truly enjoy their comments and look forward to more of the same.
