Tom Ploppert knives

Thanks for the nice comments on the Napanoch, but I posted it because I thought Tom did a great job of capturing the look and feel of that vintage pattern, especially the bone, and his has a shield.

I don't know Tom, but I look forward to the WIP as well.

A few pics to start this WIP,

blades are outlined on the damascus and CPM 154 for the springs

Parts are shaped up and the tangs are where Tom wants them. 0.005 high at half stop and 0.010 to 0.015 high at closed position. Time to surface grind.

surface ground and the tangs are ready to be drilled and reamed for bushings

Pre-drilled and reamed to accept aluminum bronze bushings, bushings will be .001 larger than blade thickness to prevent lock-up.

If I remember right, Tony uses bushings and Reese does not. Tom believes bushings make a better knife and I agree.

Here's an image provided by Joe Mason of one of Tom's knives...a 3 1/2" Ebony Wharncliffe Trapper. Very nice work by both artisans.

That's a real sweet looking WT. Excellent work by both parties. Thanks for posting it, Kerry.

Nice post: I like Bushings also, they are a pain an extra work to use them, but I feel they help me make a better knife.

Tom asked me to post a few pics of knives he is bringing to California, Kerry already posted one, here is a Wharncliffe lockback whittler, difficult pattern, even for the best makers. WIP on the damascus cattle knife will not continue on this forum.

Thanks for posting those, Kris! It looks like Tom has done justice to that fine pattern.

Great Tribute to a quality Custom Knifemaker and a Southern Gentleman! Tom Ploppert and I just recently did some old fashioned Texas "Hoss Trad'n". Tom made two beautiful Trappers for me as partial trade for a First Year 1956 Second Generation Colt SAA .45 Revolver; which is in progress of having a "Texas Cattle Brands" Valade Master Engraving. One of Tom's Knives is for my son's 36th Birthday and it has Natural Stag. Mine has Amber Stag and immediately upon receipt, I shipped the Knives to Master Engraver-Robert B. Valade; located in Seaside, Oregon for Engraving. I will post photos when I receive these magnificent knives back from engraving. Can't wait to whittle something and see how
my Ploppert Trapper feels in my hand! Thank's TOM!!!

He has a website and two Facebook pages. His number and email are on his website.

I was able to CE and CF a couple of his knives over the summer. Very nice, and he's a great guy as well.
