Back from The Watchmen.

Technically, extremely well done. Solid effort from every one of the actors, especially that intense little fellow who played Rorshach. The director really seemed to respect his source material, sticking close to as many elements as he possibly could.

I doubt it will be a great commercial success, though. It's mainly told in flashbacks, as the source material was ... that doesn't seem to work with a movie audience (it just confuses them). Tremendous, brutal violence and more than a little sex. A strong attempt is made to make every character a real person, and not some cardboard comic cut-out. There are no villains, and most especially there are no heroes. Most importantly, the original author's vision comes through very clearly -- and it's a brutally depressing vision.

I suppose it's a sign of our tough times, but the movie does resonate emotionally with that depressed international mood. It's very successful as a piece of cinematic art.

Now, if you'll excuse your old Uncle, I need a good, stiff drink. And maybe I'll find an old-style, relentlessly optimistic graphic novel around the library somewhere. Something to break this dark mood.;)

See you around.

Jamie, without having read the comic books (graphic novels?), would it be okay to see the movie? Or would it be better to read the originals first?

I watched Max Pain. And didn't read any.. Sometimes they get it right, where more than just comic book nerds can understand, (no offense)

You know me. I had NOT read the graphic novel, but did so before I went. It's the "intellectual" side of me -- always having to do research first.

I think you'll catch more subtleties and perhaps appreciate it a bit more if you read the graphic novel first. However, it's still worthwhile to see the movie without ever reading the graphic novel.

I imagine I will see this movie again, despite its essentially depressing nature. After all, every "famous" Russian novelist is depressing, but their work is worth reading.

Lots of gratuitous violence and sex ???????????? I will see it and most probably enjoy it, as well :D :D My kinda movie,,,,,Also I enjoy the confusing,,,,, jumping around type plots,,,,,different time frames and stuff,,,,,,,makes you hafta think,,,,,gr8 exercise for the gord. If ya don't use it you'll lose it.

You have not lived till you've had Edradour in a Value cup.

Well, I've added a couple to my want list. Definitely a Horton/Ban collaboration knife. And some sort of Horton chopper. Still thinking on that one.

I never quite got up the courage to ask Jeremy who he keeps in the cage.

Hey Busse Brothers!

It's been a long arduous work phase for me but Brother Horton called so I had to respond!

My time has been spent with work and when not work, with my son. I let the personal computing time fall off...

Missed quite a bit but I'm supposed to be on vacation this week (in theory) but I will be working - a big training phase coming up as usual.

So, let me buy a round for today - God knows I need it too!

Drink up brothers.

PS - nice box o'steel you got there Horton! :D
