Toohr #3 knife sharpener

Oh! Do you lose angle choice? Is this necessary for regular kitchen knives?

It is not necessary, just something for convenience. You might lose a tiny bit of extremely steep angle but you would not normally need it. Another option would be to hang the clamp bar over the edge of a table or make some feet/stands to sit under the sharpener to lift it up so you can rotate it.

For common 6 inch stones, you can use the long and one of the short springs together (between the handle and the stone holder). The Toohr kit comes with 2 short and 1 long spring.

The short ones are actually meant for use together with the stopper collars to set your stroke length when sharpening, but you can get by not using one of the short springs as a stopper.

For 4 inch stones, you will need a tube, 75mm long, 8.5mm inner diameter; OR a long spring with an internal diameter of about 9mm, and probably about 90mm long to pair up with the long Toohr spring. But a tube works much better in my opinion.

Go to your local hardware store and find a piece of aluminum/steel/brass tubing with 8.5mm(or a bit more) internal diameter, then have them cut you 2 pieces. 1 piece 75mm long, and another 22mm long. Even a rigid plastic tube will work fine. The long piece will be for 4 inch stones and the short piece for 6 inch stones. Pair them up with the long spring alone on the Toohr stone holder rod, just in front of the handle.
I was reading several old threads and saw you have the tsrop k3 and hapstone r2 classic. Was thinking about getting off those, before I choose to get the toohr… I wondering if I made a mistake.. lol.

No, I wouldn't say that you've made a mistake at all. Yes, I have those two systems and I also have most other systems that is available on the market today. I design upgrades, adapters, add-ons and improvements for sharpening systems & tools so for that reason I own almost all modern models of popular sharpening systems.

The Toohr #3 system is a great sharpening system at a much lower price (for now) than a K03 or R2 and I would expect it to rise in price as it gains popularity. If you ever want any of the Hapstone or TSProf clamps, then you can use them on your Toohr system. TSProf K03 and TSProf Kadet knife + scissors clamps work on the Toohr bar without any adapters. Hapstone R2 clamps work on the Toohr bar with a small adapter that Gritomatic sells.

Great! You put my mind at ease! The other devices are so enticing with all that aluminium and shiniest. Lol

Regarding the Toohr magnetic base - when they release it, it will probably initially be sold only as a Tsprof Kadet / K03 magnetic base, but the same one fits on the Toohr bar.
I see Hapstone magnetic tables, regular and small, with horizontal mounting slots in stock at Gritomatic. Thinking 2 simple angle bars and appropriate screws would work.

I do wish that it was available through some other medium other than aliexpress. Right now it looks like the price is fluctuating dramatically and I am seeing it for 120$ plus $40 shipping to the US. Not worth it at that price for me but will definitely keep an eye out for other locations and peoples experiences here.
Never used AX before, but just got red Toohr3 from Toohr Official Store for 118.00 US plus taxes free shipping. It took 12 days to get to west coast. Have not taken from box.

New users get a bigger discount on their first order (At least on some stuff) so prices are cheaper. The silver model was also about $50 cheaper than the red one. Kind of odd how the US gets free shipping but Canada does not. It did come via FedEx instead of postal mail though. Mine should hopefully be here in a day or 2.

Was it in an actual box? Seems everybody has been getting theirs in a plastic shipping envelope with parts wrapped in newspaper.

one side is ripped, and you can see a bunch of foam. I was impressed at the 12 days, estimate is it would not be here until Nov 14th...

Ah, so a plastic envelope with parts wrapped then. Supposedly the other seller of these has actual boxes but their prices are also higher. Ordered mine on the 20th, shipped on the 21st, handed off to Fedex on the 25th and now sitting about 4 hours away from me waiting to be handed to Canada Post for final delivery since Fedex doesn't come to my town. Should have it by Tuesday if I am lucky, Wednesday if not..

Yes, this could work with an adapter. It would probably be best to remove tbe whole rotating unit from the TooHR base and directly install it on the mount point for the TooHR rotating unit though.

:-) Assemble, tighten everything up and let us know what you think scottc3 scottc3 !

I will use this thread, and my local hardware store. thx- but probably next month:-) VERY EXCITED ABOUT A TABLE TO GO WITH CLAMPS!

It's here, it's here, it's here! I went and picked it up from the post office, raced home and unpacked it. The photos are thumbnails, if you want to see bigger versions click the image to be taken to imgur where you can click to enlarge the images to their full size.

First impressions:

I thought that it was in a box when they brought it out from the back but it was a bit too squishy, it is just the foam "case". It is still light years ahead of the newspaper wrapped and thrown in a bag packing from the unboxing I originally saw.
Wrapped in a few layers of plastic.

The foam "case". It does it's job but not overly well. An actual box around it would do much more to protect the flexible foam from bending and causing potential damage.

Decent. If you wanted I suppose you could find a case to fit and have a nice storage/travel option.

CASUALTIES! We all know that the stones are not the best but still sucks that they were all broken except for 1.

My base is quite dirty and covered with a fine grit and oil. The slider itself feels really gritty so I will have to bite the bullet and take it apart. Pray for me 777 Edge 777 Edge 😂 Better get some change ready for the swear jar.

The stone holder has 2 springs on it, a short and a long. This is enough to perfectly hold a 6" stone without issue. The length of the rod from the nut in front of the handle to where it goes into the front of the stone holder is about 157mm, or 6.18", or a bit shy of an average banana. Is this the same size as earlier units, or did they shorten it so you would not need another spring or extension tube?

Clamps and parts bag.

The base unit. Looks fine, no damage that I could see. It does not take much turning of the nut to drastically change how much force is needed to turn it.

I did however notice that the threaded rod portion would turn in and out sometimes so I will have to take it apart and see if it needs some loctite to prevent it from coming all the way out unintentionally.

The only part I have an actual complaint about. The screw flange is significantly off so I will need to get some kind of washer or spacer so that the knob has enough clearance to actually rotate like it should. It is held together with a screw from the top so it can be "fixed" thankfully.

The upright unit. All seems fine for the most part. There is a bit of wiggle in the upright rods, will take it apart and tighten things. The part that holds the guide rod is loose as is normal and has quite a bit of wiggle. The lock nut just needs to be snugged up a bit.

The finish on all the aluminum parts appears to be bead blasted. You could almost think they were cast parts if you could not see some machining marks on parts under the textured finish. They feel nice in the hand and have a pleasant matte tone. So far I am happy with what I got for the price.

I sure will! 😂 Hope your bearings play along better than mine did.

No, if you double up the Springs then there is no need for a tube. Mine came like yours with 2 springs also. To me, using 2 springs just seems like a production shortcut. :-) If you want to use 4 inch stones, you'll need a tube or a bunch more springs.

I used my short spring as a spring stopper next to the drill stop collar, like TSProf does. I'm only using my long spring, paired up with an extension tube.

Regarding your stones, trust me, it's a blessing that they are busted. This forces you to just throw them away and not be tempted to use them. 😂

Looking forward to reading what you think after your first use!

my slide is dirtier then that, but tower base slides smoothly. I was going to post box with a couple holes in blue plastic wrap, and unboxing, so now I don't need to- thx. As has been guessed already, that clear finish will probably last longer then the red.
The screw flange is significantly off
pic is not showing for me?
Our tower height adjuster screws fine nice with consistantly firm interference so some dry lube is called for. Did not notice wiggle yet.

Yeah, for some reason 2 pictures refuse to load. If you click on the failed to load icon it will take you to the image itself.

I was going to give everything a shot of LPS 1, a dry film PTFE spray that I use on a lot of stuff.
