It's here, it's here, it's here! I went and picked it up from the post office, raced home and unpacked it. The photos are thumbnails, if you want to see bigger versions click the image to be taken to imgur where you can click to enlarge the images to their full size.
First impressions:
I thought that it was in a box when they brought it out from the back but it was a bit too squishy, it is just the foam "case". It is still light years ahead of the newspaper wrapped and thrown in a bag packing from the unboxing I originally saw.
Wrapped in a few layers of plastic.
The foam "case". It does it's job but not overly well. An actual box around it would do much more to protect the flexible foam from bending and causing potential damage.
Decent. If you wanted I suppose you could find a case to fit and have a nice storage/travel option.
CASUALTIES! We all know that the stones are not the best but still sucks that they were all broken except for 1.
My base is quite dirty and covered with a fine grit and oil. The slider itself feels really gritty so I will have to bite the bullet and take it apart. Pray for me

Better get some change ready for the swear jar.
The stone holder has 2 springs on it, a short and a long. This is enough to perfectly hold a 6" stone without issue. The length of the rod from the nut in front of the handle to where it goes into the front of the stone holder is about 157mm, or 6.18", or a bit shy of an average banana. Is this the same size as earlier units, or did they shorten it so you would not need another spring or extension tube?
Clamps and parts bag.
The base unit. Looks fine, no damage that I could see. It does not take much turning of the nut to drastically change how much force is needed to turn it.
I did however notice that the threaded rod portion would turn in and out sometimes so I will have to take it apart and see if it needs some loctite to prevent it from coming all the way out unintentionally.
The only part I have an actual complaint about. The screw flange is significantly off so I will need to get some kind of washer or spacer so that the knob has enough clearance to actually rotate like it should. It is held together with a screw from the top so it can be "fixed" thankfully.
The upright unit. All seems fine for the most part. There is a bit of wiggle in the upright rods, will take it apart and tighten things. The part that holds the guide rod is loose as is normal and has quite a bit of wiggle. The lock nut just needs to be snugged up a bit.
The finish on all the aluminum parts appears to be bead blasted. You could almost think they were cast parts if you could not see some machining marks on parts under the textured finish. They feel nice in the hand and have a pleasant matte tone. So far I am happy with what I got for the price.
