Top Ten Observations To Date

10. There appears to be a substanital amount of hype about knives coming to the Busse Company Store and only the privileged few are able to actually get a knife after hours of what they call fun doing the F5 thing.

True, the company store offerings are limited (of special models anyway - regular production models in the company store don't seem to be in short supply), but you can always order models from the Busse website. You just have to wait longer for delivery.

9. There appears to be a number of individuals that seek attention or use what I shall call the show off mentality of trying to better another members Busse knife collection or a certain Busse Combat knife.

True. That's part of the collecting game. "Mine is bigger/better/rarer/mintier than yours." There are also quite a few people who enjoy using their knives, and lots of information on the forum about sharpening/moding/accessorizing. Maybe it seems like there are more collectors than users, because you don't really need all that many knives if they are built to last a lifetime. But both groups bring something to the forum.

8. There appears to be a certain amount of secrecy or unrevealed information to the public about Busse Combat knife production and actual quanities of their so called Busse Variants.

Variants are a subset of production - anything from a one item experiment, to a factory mistake, to a small run of a modified design. Lots of times you don't even know variants exist until people get multiple copies of a particular model and notice they are different. So we can estimate how many of a particular variant exists based on how many people say "I've got one like that", but in some cases there are no definite numbers. In cases where the factory notices a difference, or makes a limited run, or grinds a unique knife, then it's easier to tell.

7. There appears to be a number of what I shall call stories made up about reasons for selling a Busse or reasons for a person's interest in Busse Combat knives or reasons an individual's knife is better than anyone elses, etc.

Regarding interest in Busse, I'm sure there are speculators out there but I prefer to consider people's motives at face value until they prove differently. Regarding one knife being better than another, that's probably been going on since the first sharp rocks, with varying degrees of success. There are obviously elements of hype, personal preference, and actual performance differences in the ongoing argument. Jerry makes a good effort to build knives that withstand hard use (see the Cliff Stamp Battle Mistress).

6. There appears to be a number of so called Busse Combat knife fans that buy from Busse Company Store only to turn around and sell them.

There are probably better ways to make money than by flipping Busses.

5. There appears to be what I shall call the good ole' boy system in amongst the old time Busse Hogs.

Which, IMHO, is a good thing. You get to know people and trust them and know they're serious about the $1300 variant set hiding in your safe. So you're more likely to contact them when you want to buy or sell, than somebody who is unknown. Trust still counts for a lot in my book. That doesn't mean I'll deny trust to someone I don't know, it just means you have to stick around for a while and earn the higher levels.

4. There appears to be a number of old time collectors that are not regularly participating members on the forum.

Probably not, for whatever reason. Bladeforums can eat up lots of time. If you have a big collection already, there are maybe five or six people who have stuff you'd be interested in adding. You can talk directly to them, if needed. Also, there's not so much immediacy. Most things eventually come back on the market - even the wedding cake BM  (or am I misremembering that? Maybe somebody posted a pic and said never for sale). Being first on your block with a Flaming Warden isn't so important. Also, knife collecting is a better passtime in person, not modulated by an electronic box.

3. There appears to be a substantial amount of what I shall call the "buddy" system amongst certain individuals in the effort to assist each other with sales of Busse Combat knives.

You watch out for your friends - it's easy to be away from your computer for the fifteen minutes a game warden run has lasted in the company store.

2. There appears to be a number of individuals into Busse Combat knives for the sole purpose of making a buck and not as an enthusiast of Busse Combat knives.

Doesn't make me happy, but probably true. Anything that makes money attracts people like that. I'd suggest again that there are better ways to make money than flipping Busses.

1. There appears to be a number of individuals into Busse for the mere benefit of themselves and not as collectors. This is what I shall call the "What's In It For Me" of "It's All About Me" mentality.

Sounds like #2, I think??? Anyway, in my experience this forum is populated mostly by good guys who like knives - either to use or collect or both. I remember Blade '03, where IdahoSkunk dug up a little utility knife Jerry had ground circa Desert Storm. There was a huge "gee-whiz" factor from all the Busse fans. It's about the excitement of finding something great, and a pleasure in real craftsmanship. There are bad apples everywhere, but they don't last long.

Thanks for reading to all those that chose to do so, made the effort, and took the time!!

Best way to get on the boat is go to www.bussecombat.com and put in an order for a Badger attack. You'll wait a bit, but no F5 stress. If you like it, than use and enjoy it. If not, then you can get rid of it and find something that works better.

Now,let's get back to showing our knives, talking about them, cigars, booze and whatever else trips out triggers (keep the t&a in the w&c though). :D

I blame the t&a on Porkerson! :p (I hope my IP doesn't get banned from the SR company store now  ).

man oh man.... fact is if you are into busse knives just to make a buck you have limited imagination, you would make better money begging for spare change.

after three days of hitting f5 and not scoring a blade and wasting my own rare time i figure if a person wants to do the same thing and mark a blade up by 20 bucks then great, cause my time is well worth that 20 bucks, in fact i am thankfull for the guy that has that kinda time on his hands...

i like busse just how it is, i may not have liked it at first but i have come to love its quirks

Sorry about the pink Warden. But at the time it just seemed to be the right thing to do. And editing it out myself after an hour or so would have been a good idea too. Thank for cleaning that up for me. I got distracted in writing my "rant" in another thread.

Oh that reminds me did you ever edit out all those guys in g-stings that Cobalt posted?

Hey that Progunner is an A hole and he has got it out for me

I just know it.....:grumpy:

 ;)

Oh that reminds me did you ever edit out all those guys in g-stings that Cobalt posted?

Cobalt has a special dispensation that allows him to post men in g-strings. I'm not sure how he managed it, but it has something to do with Blade '05.

God, ....I love it here!! "FAMILY"
ziggy_bday2000.jpg

Now fill me back up and let's drink!!:D

its easy to say "im not trying to argue or pick a fight, but heres why you guys suck."

and then fall back on the qualifier of "i said i wasnt trying to argue or insult anyone" when people get defensive.

its just an absolution of blame and responsibility.

Cheetahspeed, don't do it, leave now or you will go to financial ruin. LEAVE!!! Do NOT BUY A BUSSE, because you CANNOT STOP AT ONE!!

I would challenge anyone here to stand up and say "Hey that Progunner is an A hole and he has got it out for me" and be able to prove it.

BLADE SHOW 2005 in the Hotel!!! You wouldn't leave me alone for 1 minute with your thoughts on my misintentions!!!! I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU!!!

YOU GUYS ARE A-HOLES!!! *runs off crying*

Anyway... Today's Homework: Go back 2 yrs and further and read and see what hogdom is about. Find out about the origin of this and the foundation it is built upon. If I were to judge America right now, I would be a bit sick (Due to a religious stand point... Don't debate this, take it for a metaphor as I will not debate back or go to Political..Thanks) where as I look back at our founding fathers and see they were God fearing men who came here for the right reasons and intentions. That foundation will never change, regardless of the current poor standing in some (not all obviously) aspects. I treat the Hogdom somewhat similiar to how I treat America. I will defend to the death it's beliefs, values and morals, but I will not conform away from what the foundation and beliefs originated on.

Basically, research the roots. Don't like them, well fine. But don't come into my home and tell me it looks like S*** and then suggest how I, not you in your home, but me in mine, should change things cause you'll get a size 14 tusk where the sun don't shine. Obviously this is not a threat in anyway, but a metaphor to hopefully allow you to stop and think, "Hmm... I'm entering SOMEONE else's home..." before you post. I have too little paitence these days for people to press their opinions on me then expect me to justify them.

Bottom Line: These are my brothers and sisters. Your first post of "Observations" come across to me as arrogant as you obviously only based your "Observations" on the present circumstance with failure to research the beginning. If you had, your "Late night personalities to come hijack" would've revealed that there is a bond amongst this forum that we care enough about one another to joke, ask about personal lives and such to hijack a thread. It's because we care, not because we are rude.

Some observations of mine.

I guess I am a new Good ol' boy from Canada!

I first heard of Busse in early 2006 and I called to ask what the deal was with only one model of knife on the website for sale whilst a whole range was out there in use. The lady I spoke to was very polite and very helpful. A few months later I ordered an FBM. It arrived and I am very happy with the quality.

Here's what I figure. To keep high levels of both quality AND control in a company, one run of a specific blade at one time is a good idea. It takes a while, but I imagine that the positive to this is that the control is kept within Jerry's reach at all times. Then after the box office closes things get changed and geared up for the next model run.

If all of a sudden these knives were "mass produced" I think a lot of the purists would be disappointed.

Part of the fun is not just the quality of the blades, but the collectability. I admire this concept of re-invention that seems to be there with Busse. I did not buy a badger ($ not there, but hey I have my FBM) I am however always looking forward to the next run. I think I will enjoy collecting Busse knives for a long time.

Something is worth what someone will give you for it. As far as reselling older knives, I say go for it, if that is what you want to do. Buying them just to resell them? Well, if a blade is sought after such is the way of the capitalist. The demand is obviously there. That can't be so if the knives are sub-standard.

I'll NEVER sell mine!

Keep it up Jerry.

I knew I was old, and I hoped I could be good(I was Good once, I was asleep and I do not think it was my Fault)

I do like to show off, for me I think it started with either Marbles in Grade School or maybe my Granddaddy taking pictures of me as a small child 48 years ago.

Let us not forget those ever so popular words: "Hold my Beer and Watch this.

I try to get people to not just buy knives on the internet, I try to get them to go out and look for them at shows and such.

This Forum is read by and not participated in by at least a few old timey Collectors I know of, people that used to buy the knives 8 at a time and then they gave away at least five as soon as they received them.

There are also those who got upset with Jerry and dropped out.

I think you do not need to like the Maker to like the knives, all you got to do is to use the knives and figure out if these are the knives for you.

I do like to Earn Money(Making money is Counterfiting I think) Selling or trading Busse knives, The way I like to do that is to buy a knife, then trade that knife a few years later for maybe 2 that cost about what I paid for the first knife, then a couple years later do the same with those two.

My Wife has pretty much put an end to that by telling me to not trade out of production knives for in production or recently out of production knives, She says "If I want a Knife just buy it"

And That takes a lot of the fun out of it for me!!!

By the Way there are knives available for sale at the Busse Company Store that do not sell out right away, there are some there right now.

Some models just seem to be more popular than others and therefore sell faster, is that Bad?

I like the Busse Company Store, I like that I do not need to order a knife and wait for an INFInite "TwoWeeks" to receive my knives.

(Snip) So as a general address to all, if you don't normally come here and you only come to say what you don't like about things, don't expect anyone to bend over backwards to offer you a hand. Expect to be treated like a troll.

Now,let's get back to showing our knives, talking about them, cigars, booze and whatever else trips out triggers (keep the t&a in the w&c though). :D

Sage advice...

Old school, looking out for friends, PM-fiend, trader, seller, buyer, tryer, piglet in training,

Honestly, if Dark Ops had a steel that was actually unchippable that could maintain high hardness and produced models that I was interested in - I'd be buying their knives (though I'd grind off the logo's). And as far as the social crappyness of doing that goes - thats pretty bad.

I happen to like jerry's style (though I hate choils), and love looking at the new models and the custom/varients. Most of the people here are nice guys and gals, and many of the people here are no more prone to flaming then other companies knife owners/fans.

If I only looked for the bad points in a company to base my desire to use their equipment/product off of - I would be stuck with a very select few custom makers, and spending WAY more money then I do now. Unless I just got fed up with bad service, unpleasent or disdainful customer practices, high prices, double speak and negativity and chose to only make my own knives.

Everything sucks for some reason, at some point. If you only look for those point, your life is going to consistantly move from bad places to bad places. Theres a lot of good to be had on this forum, and if you buy directly from busse, not that much bad as long as your willing to wait (and possibly pay custom prices).

As far as the after market: certain things in this life are very hard to get, be it because they are inherently so, or because people make them so. You cant avoid this, as you can't force the world or the people in it to be good for your life.

And honestly, It's worth it just for the sense of uncomfortableness every time cobalt posts a picture here. :D "oooooooooh come on.... cooooome oooon... cobalt.... seriously...."

It's fun.

[edited to increase severity of comparison]

CS if you have read the other threads on this forum you will know that I am somewhat of a minority here in my viewpoint. But this is what I have to say. Don't let the few discourage you. Jerry is a great guy. He makes a great knife. The true hogs on this forum are good people. So stick around. The only valid reason to not stick around is the one Cobalt stated earlier...it may prove a slippery slope to bankruptcy.

Not a problem brother. I must have missed Cobalt's dream guys in g strings though.

Hey that Progunner is an A hole and he has got it out for me

I just know it.....:grumpy:

 ;)

Shut up and shovel your snow, just make sure you have Nancy ready to call EMS when you have a stroke.

BLADE SHOW 2005 in the Hotel!!! You wouldn't leave me alone for 1 minute with your thoughts on my misintentions!!!! I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU!!!

YOU GUYS ARE A-HOLES!!! *runs off crying*

Ha, ha. I'd bleed any of you hogs like an old butcher when it comes to my SIL. :D

Like he was wrong???;) :p

You know it. :D

I became somewhat interested or intrigued by the Busse Combat knives a few months ago through a friend.

I have got to ask you CS, does this friend of yours post here? Who is he/she? Does he/she share the same observations as you? If not, then what does he/she have to say to you in regards to your observations and feelings? I am just really curious. If your friend has been coming here, reading and participating then he/she has witnessed more than you have, by your own admission.

CS - Welcome. I thought Busse was all hype once too. I realized later that the "hype" was user exuberance for a great product. The energy is because we have a good time. A decade ago **all** of my free time was spent whitewater kayaking, In addition to owning a business, I taught whitewater kayaking on the weekends, organized schools of 250 students (met my wife while she was one of those students and I as instructor,) organized and taught swiftwater rescue clinics, held several officer positions in a six hundred member whitewater kayaking club adjacent to the Ocoee Olympic Course and spent 45 of 32 weekends a year on the water.

My life has changed as I've gotten older: my wife and I reproduced two little urchins :D who have stolen my heart and all of my daylight free time. I now live in an area that is a parched desert of whitewater.

The search for the "one perfect hard use knife" led me here. I discovered the right bladesmith but I didn't find the "perfect knife." I found several different kinds of them.

I also discovered some new friends. I found a community like the one I knew when I was paddling. Not just "net friends" but people from other cities and states who I get together with to socialize, swap lies and share a laugh with. Friends I know I could count on if I was in trouble and nearby. They have the same friend in me.

Stick around if ya want. I doubt you would regret that decision. (Check that... your checkbook will regret that decision! :p) I really don't care if you stay or not at this point - You've not become part of the family yet. If you do stay, then I guarantee you would benefit from the interaction here. You would become one of the people I speak of in the above paragraphs... and if you left then? I would deeply regret it.

I was irked when I first read the condescending tone of your initial post. (It's been a loooooong couple of days for me. :o) After I read a few posts from my friends, I felt humbled.

I then saw the post from Mike and the rare treasure, Kim, whom I met for the first time last summer. She is an absolute inspiration. A true blessing to be around. THEN I remembered what I loved about these guys and wanted to relate it.

Stick around but DO watch out for Progunner... he's an a-hole. :p

Kim resents being called a Busse "good old boy".;) She would be ok with "good ol' gal", though.

The Busse Three Finger Knife she is holding was an anonymous
gift from one of those self-serving, out for profit, "good old boys" who has never made himself known. A sorry lot, eh?

She is a hit and run victim who cannot walk or talk. The love, acceptance, and generocity of the Busses and the Hogs toward her has been overwhelming. She stands to inherit a modest Busse collection from ol' dad, as I buy them but can't bear to part with them.
