TOPS tops itself again - behold the picatinny rail mounted knife!

Yep, I put a usable edge and a point on one of these -

for a SIGINTer.

And someone from the J8 had me polish the edge of one of these

and the S2 of the CO that did perimeter patrol ordered one of these

Plus AFOSI agents with dual tomahawks and pistols holstered under their chins on their MOLLE.

Hey in all fairness i carried a tomahawk, but it was at my back in a quick rig holster or on my assault pack for long range patrols. Plenty of other guys carried hawks or patrol machetes in case things got real up close and personal.

I like the tops stryker defender tool, always looked like a really rugged tool for chopping and digging and prying, things which I did alot of in forward areas.

I was totally expecting this picture when I clicked.

As was I... takes ridiculous to a whole new level.

I've been on a Sibert kick lately, and earlier today glanced at TOPS "Sudden Impact" tanto... now thinking the whole brand in general is cheesier than a Van Damme flick...

I'm not sure what any of you have against the basic knife. It is just a 3.25-inch clip-point with a fairly conventional handle. Not big enough for close-combat in my mind but very handy for normal cutting chores.
As for the scabbard mount, maybe some of you "AR" shooters haven't noticed but the real troops are hanging everything but the kitchen sink on the rails of their real M-4s. I probably wouldn't do that myself but I'm not on patrol in Afghanistan either.

....I don't get it. Maybe I'm missing something here, but doesn't a bayonet already do the same job better?

If the job was inflicting injury to the enemy, yes. But in this case the job is coming up with an solution to a need no one has. :D

Looks like it has a point, right at the end opposite the handle.:)

Haha I'm just trying to play nice. As I said, I see how this might be implemented for someone who thought every second might count if they emptied a clip. Better to be over prepared than dead I guess.

Better to have a rifle that points well and can be brought to bear quickly in a CQC situation or can be grasped and fired a variety of ways (for instance when your MRAP just got blown onto its side by an IED and your about ten seconds into a mad minute and you have to wriggle out the gunners hatch while trying to dump a mag in the general direction of an enemy LMG) better to have a rifle that doesn't get snagged on things when trying to get through a doorway getting you stuck in the fatal funnel. better to have a knife on your person where when your clearing a house and some guy jumps on you and tries to wrestle your rifle out of your hands hes not taking your knife too.

The only implementation I can see for this knife is varmint hunting. you stick it on your poodle shooter so that you don't need to have a knife poking you in your hip or butt when you get in or out of your pick up. once you got a critter then you sling the weapon and dress the game.

It's for when you're out of ammo, usually you would throw your gun at the enemy, now you can throw the knife first and then the gun. 2 more bad guys down! We'll probably see it in the next Expendables movie. :)

i actually like the knife. i would prefer 440c or something more resistant to saltwater.

BTW, i was a grunt.

I think that depends partially on MOS. I think in combat MOS' the armorer would take one look at that thing and you'd be busy doing push-ups till you arms fell off. On the other hand I can totally picture some soft skill MOS thinking this thing is the bee's knees, I swear to you I have seen POG's with their M68s mounted under the barrel.

Wait . . . What? Isn't a M68 some kind of optic? That's a joke, right? And whats a POG?

That is an abomination.

Good lord. I was only kidding, but that thing was actually out at a SHOT show, or whatever show it was? Seriously? :barf:

I'd say photoshop, but I can't imagine someone photoshopping all the others. That thing is truly awful. I think the funniest part is the flash-hider at the muzzle. My love for the old lever actions is partly based on their simple, utilitarian appearance. Marlin has royally screwed that up.

I think I'll spoon with my 94 tonight. Been missin' it.

No i'm not kidding in the least. In some forward areas people are required to carry weapons who have no idea what they are doing with them. I have buddy who was soft skill in the air force and the only time they had their weapons was when they got on the plane. When they hit downrange they got out of the plane and turned them right in to their company armorer and didn't see them again until it was time to go home.

In alot of the army or marine units people arent allowed to just do that because they might conceivably get called on to defend the base or pull some sort of gaurd duty regardless if they are just an e-2 pac clerk. So my theory is that depending on the rack they store their rifle on (usualy made out of wood) they just mount it under the barrel so it will fit better. ITs not likethey are actually fighting. They probably only have ot shoot the rifle once a year. same goes for the pt test. thats how you end up with these fat soldiers and marines. http://www.google.com/search?q=fat+...ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CEIQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=664

POG = person other than grunt. Its a derogatory term for people that dont fulfill a combat MOS.

If you look at the accessory market and all of the yo-yo's with AR's it seems plausible. Everytime I go shoot I see guys with AR's who shouldn't be allowed to shoot a Red Ryder without supervision. Knives have been paired with guns forever so this doesn't seem so far fetched.

I would really like to see which TOPS knives most TOPS bashers have actually used. My guess, none.

I personally own and use a Shango and love it. TOPS makes great knives--you just have to paw through all of their silly uber-tacti-cool designs and ad copy to find the solidly practical ones.

Whoa! I got to thinkin' (which really is almost never a good thing) and just realized somethin':

If you combine the TOPS Picatinny Rail knife system with the Mantis "Wikus" laser knife - you could get rid of your AimPoint or Red Dot sights!  You'd dethrone Gecko45 with your infinite mall-ninja-ness!

My idea, ya'll! I said it here first! Now where's my damn royalties?

~Chris

ps - Dang. Leave it to Mantis & TOPS to put Aimpoint out of business. Who'da thunk it?

I like this. We could call it the TOPS Picawukus.
