I agree this is a bit on the bizarre side but to trash the entire TOPS line as some on here seem to do is a bit much. IMO
As far as combat knives go, my son is a Marine rifleman and told me their KaBars are pretty much a utility tool only and not considered except only as a last resort for self defense (obviously) but their particular situation being out in the desert pretty much precluded any knife or bayonet work. Of course anything is possible.
During his last deployment to Helmand Province the Taliban never came any closer than 3-400 meters. Plus they had the ANA doing all the house clearing while he was there December 2010-July 2011 so luckily only the slimmest of chances for CQB.
He wants very much to take a large knife or kukri to attach on his vest for his next deployment later this year. He said this was mainly for show and possible use against the usually stoned stupid Afghan Army and/or militia they are forced to work with.
