Toy collection not needed for the bush

Spooky,

The last sentence of your post is the only part which has a friendly tone. The rest is riddled with defensivness and hostility (there seems to be a lot of that going on around here).

I'm glad that you're a productive member of society.Good for you.

Hi raym, I think it is pretty cool you spent 3 years solo out in the Alaskan bush with very little manufactured tools, but heres comes my question, dd you have an a job or did you just feel like it would be a good time? It sort of reminds me of the movie Jeremiah Johnston...

Raym,
No shotgun? I am also something of a gun nut, but honestly the gun I use the most is a 65 dollar single shot 20 gauge. Also specifically what knives do you like for the wilderness? You also said you did not like trapping, why? Chris

Barney,

I had a small income from a business that I had built up.It wasn't much but I didn't need much. That, along with a nest egg kept me in supplies for a while. But since I wasn't there to nurse the business along, the income dwindled.

Chris,

The shotgun is popular everywhere but I didn't use one in Alaska.I used the 30/06 for moose and bear and the 22 for small game.I prefer to exclude myself from trapping on moral grounds. That is my choice and I don't care to debate with anyone about it.

"the more you know, the less you need" philospphy is proven by nesmuk and many others,

Not trying to get anyones feathers up but didn't Nesmuk say he was made fun of by his peers because he had his hatchet custom made to his specs and it cost a lot of money at the time for a hatchet? I think that is what a lot of us are doing. Trying to find what is perfect for us. If you have to spend three times the price and it is exactly what you want, is it worth it? It was to Nesmuk and I guess it is to me.

Raym-thanks for the info on simple stuff working. Sometimes I forget that in my quest for the "best" blades and guns there ever was. I knew it all along from the history of the mountain men but I can't help lookin some more, haha.

Messer,

I seem to be misunderstood a lot.It must be the way I hold my mouth when I talk.

I've never suggested that someone should use crappy tools. At the moment,I have a few Randall knives although at the time I was in Alaska,I'd never even held one.Simplicity doesn't neccesarily mean junk.

Raym-guess I was misunderstood too. I was responding to rescue riley that is why I quoted him. I didn't mean junk just the diffenrence between a knife that is (I forget exactly how you put it) unexeptional versus custom made and expensive. I added a thank you to you on my last post too that might explain a bit.

No debate necessary and I will leave the subject alone after this. I fail to see the difference at all between a conibear and a 22. I also think that if it is to feed myself and my family a steel trap will put meat on the table, morals be damned. Chris

That's pretty accurate, it wasn't meant to be any friendlier or any more caustic than your initial post. You seem to find it odd that there has been a tone of 'defensiveness and hostility' in this thread overall, after making your introduction to this forum one of overwhelming condescension.

The last sentence you reference was more of an invitation to elaborate on your expertise, only because all I've seen so far is chastisement for perceived inadequacy instead of sharing any knowledge you might have. It seems that I've found that well to be empty.

Take care, folks-

Spooky,

I can only surmise that you must have a thorn covered cactus plant growing up your ass. That's your problem, not mine.

Wow. I have been following this thread with growing uneasiness. I'm hoping not to come under fire here, but I have reread Raym's first post and in his first sentence he says he isn't trying to offend anyone, yet the defensiveness and attacking started relatively soon.

Could there be a troll out there somewhere?

It's somewhat offensive for a new person on a board to come in and make a sweeping assumption about people on here.

I could easily respect the poster if he was sharing some experience, story etc. That is what this forum is all about. People shouldn't be made to feel silly because they post their knife collection or a pic of some new gear.

He is entitled to his opinion for sure, but it's just that, his opinion. Nothing more, nothing less. And it's definitely nothing to get angry over.

This is one of the friendlier forums on the web, let's get back to that.

Well put.

Ray - you did what I will only be able to dream about now. I had the chance several years ago, but chickened out.

Would you please relay some of your experiences, lessons learned, tool lists, etc. Maybe on separate threads. I think a lot of people would enjoy and benefit from your knowledge.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes raym, though we art unworthy, please regale us with a tale of thou taming the savage wilderness with thy humble blade, which makes Exaclibur pale...we wait on bended knee for thy infinite wisdom.

I was going to type a very lenghty post, but tknife summed it up very nicely. This forum is very friendly and it get along with out any mod help. Brian really doesnt need to handle any issues and it would be great to keep it that way. :D

Rockywolf,

Thank you.

Tknife,

I have explained this ad nauseum and if you will re-read my original post (with the chip removed from your shoulder),you will see that there is nothing to be offended by.As far as stories are concerned, too many things would just sound like tall tales but I have been answering specific questions.

Bowie,

I will email you and give you my personal email address.

I will not be posting here anymore.
