Some great and interesting combos lately, but kamagong, your pair just oozes style. Each knife elevates the other. Very fine.

Great photo too, Marthinus. Is it dangerous walking along by yourself, checking those canals? My brother's wife and in-laws are from Pietermaritzburg in the RSA - they have some pretty hair-raising tales.

I went for another road trip down the west coast of Victoria this weekend to a friends wedding. This tried and tested pair came with me.

Thanks. The black knife is a kwaiken. I'm not sure, but I think it might qualify as traditional. Kwaikens are.

It brings to mind some sort of mutant hybrid -- a sort of cross between a kwaiken, a sgian dubh, and the knife Ivan Denisovich made from the piece of steel he found.

Excellent - I'm a sucker for knives with literary allusions - sounds a lot more classy than a 'Soviet era gulag shank' too! Who made your puukko? I'm not familiar with that stamp. It looks like it may have that diamond shaped cross section that some Pekka Tuominens have, but it's obviously not one of his.
 
The puukko is a Tommi, made by Mikko Inkeroinen. It has the rhomboid cross section.

My apologies for the late reply. Only saw your post now.

Thanks for the kind words on the combo.

These trenches are part of a dirty/clean water system and I only get into the one section where it is safe and when no rain has fallen. It is also the lowest point where the clean water system flows into a wetland area, so I can easily walk up to higher ground within 2 seconds. The other parts of the system I remain outside of the trench as it is too dangerous and if it rains then it escalates the risk factor of coarse and then I dont get into any trench.

I too have heard some horror stories with regards to flash floods and people/children playing within such canals. One needs to be vigilant with regards to ones catchment area and rain within that catchment of coarse as that can result in a flash flood in those canals.

Yes, I know what you mean. These photos show what is normally a dry river bed for most of the year, that you could use as a walking track - but can very quickly become an intense torrent as a result of distant storms. :eek:
