Traditional and Modern pairings

Ok, odd thing happened to me today and I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of it before. I'm posting it here because it involves a modern folder.

So I've been carrying my Benchmade 707 Sequel in the back right pocket along with my small wallet. Today I reached into my back pocket to adjust my wallet I cut myself! I initially thought I may have did it on the pocket clip, but looking at the cut it was too thin and clean for that. I think what happened was that in putting downward pressure on the knife as I reached into my pocket it cause the axis lock to push back, thus forcing the blade out of the blade well, which meant my thumb went across the exposed blade while going into my pocket. I don't know what else could have happened.

Has anyone ever heard of this sort of thing happening?

I've had Benchmade knives open in my pocket because the thumb studs catch stuff and the blade opens easily because the axis lock doesn't have much pressure on the blade when closed. I tend to not carry knives with thumb studs any more, I've had too many of them open in my pocket as I was pulling the knife out of my pocket. I stick with primarily thumb holes and flippers now.

Oh man...just reading your description just made me cringe!!!

Knock on wood...have a handful of benchmade knives and have carried the grip and the bugout many times without this happening...but I can imagine this can happen often...

I don’t think it could happen very easily if I was grabbing the knife since I’d be pinching the butt of the knife and not really pressing the knife down to activate the axis lock. I think it was because I was trying to get at my wallet and the tight spacing led to the issue. Needless to say I won’t be putting a Benchmade in a pocket with anything I want to get at!

Yeah I've gotten a small bite from a modern knife with clip, in pocket and carried tip up. I now refuse to use pocket clips on knives that only allow tip up placement, and any that come that way are changed to tip down or removed. My Grip and Mini Grip certainly open easier than my K320 or either of my Spydy Natives.

edit - any knives that are extremely easy to open are also off my pocket carry list.

and edit 2 - (hopefully my thoughts have now come together) for me, by easy to open it can mean low friction on the action for those not easily adjusted, or the fact that I find thumb studs easier to use and seem to catch more on pocket stuff than thumb holes. There's a balance I prefer, based on the method of opening the blade.

Benchmades are notorious for having weak detents and as John mentioned the studs get caught up and open easily. This would never be an issue with a CRK studs and detent but it can still happen with any knife, thumb stud or not, it’s happened with my Hinderer before.

For this reason I only carry my knives with the blade against the seam of my pocket and occasionally check to make sure it’s closed from the outside of my pocket. (Little paranoid at times but better safe than sorry)

Cool, thanks. When I've carried in the front pockets I always have the blade against a seam, but I when I got back into carrying this Benchmade I just threw it on the back right pocket closest to my hip, so the blade was not against a seam. Who knew modern knife technology could be so precarious? I'm sure most people, but I'm a slow learner. Once bitten, twice shy, though.

Is that a drop of blood I see on the tip? 🤣

Ive never had it happen but I carry in my front pocket or side leg pocket . I would definitely snug the pivot up and try not to carry it in your back pocket that’s for sure . I don’t like my BM’s drop free I like to run them snug with a little flick required .

Nice combo.
How you find the Rx? With the serrated blade will make a good edc combo. Skeletools do pair well with traditionals.
Thanks. I have a standard Skeletool with the partially serrated blade that I've carried and used quite a bit. I like it more than I thought I would and found myself mostly using the serrated portion of the knife blade, since I almost always have a plain edged knife also. Then a good deal on the Rx came along, so I bought it. Then I misplaced it  The upshot is I like the Skeletool but have only carried the Rx a few times.
