Traditional and Modern pairings

Love the Mermaid Boker above!
This is today's carry and yesterday's carry.

See the Victorinox Floral and the Rough Ryder trapper? I have realized that this size of knife, because of the slim profile, makes a great fifth-pocket knife without being too small in the handle department. I have given the Spey blade on the Rough Ryder (Wharncliffe blade is natural patina) an overnight vinegar bath that turned out semi-successful (except for my Old Hickories, those knives/steel is IMPOSSIBLE to deal with). Carried the Vic Floral for the last two days, now carrying the RR today. I have tried to exemplify the beautiful blue/purple hue, which is what I am looking for in a forced patina, as well as protectioin, in the case of my OH's .

Replaced the grey-colored tweezers on my Explorer with black, and the toothpick is now red, plus gave it a little mini Phillips driver in the corkscefew and threw that little Vic lanyard on it, the bit makes it easier to get out of the bottom side of me Carhartts. Carrying that all days. Got a chance to really put the Native Chief to work yesterday, in the kitchen actually, cutting up a bunch of carrots, potatoes, onion, brussels sprouts, etc. It's a good knife. I accidently gave myself a little stab at one point - it's a long knife! I am carrying the Yojimbo today.

What do you mean the Old Hickory steel is impossible to deal with, what don't you like about it? I really need to get me some new jeans come fall time. I've got two pairs of jeans that I wear to work and the 5th pocket on both is completely blown out and missing the bottom. I think I may be missing out on having a handy spot for a smaller folder there. They've been like that for atleast a year haha.

Well, it started because I did not properly express to my fam that they were carbon steel and needed drying, no leaving wet in the racks to dry, so the two knives I got developed rust. That's okay, easy enough to get off, use some BKF light solution... and try to get it off with water. The steel is rusting instantly as I am drying it, red marks in the steel... so I decided to patina it using vinegar to give it a protective coating, but that only sort-of worked, as the cup I used to submerge the knives left the last inch or so of blade uncovered, so I wrapped a peice of paper towel around that section of blade, soaking up vinegar and wetting the blade.

I take the knives out to this result...

Which... is not horrible as I can use the more severe, powdered BKF to get the direct rust, or some type of abrasive so as to not wet the knives like I did before. But, I do see the protective black patina forming, all over the top side of the boning knife on the left, for example... I've decided if I'm gonna put a patina on, from now on I will just use "knife sauce" (mustard, lemon juice, vinegar) and apply it with a Q-Tip, that works in less than an hour.

So... hopefully I have fixed the problem, but will report back with my findings 😂

Oh, and towards jeans, most of the 5th pocket knives I use have a clip (Chaparral, UTX-70) except for these traditional sorts! This is a good time to learn sewing, it is a very useful skill :) Or a good time to buy some black Carhartts, that is what I wear. I didn't want to start dressing like a cowboy but I wanted pants that were more rugged and useful than the usual Levis.

I don't know what BKF is, but I recommend some food safe oil and steel wool to remove rust. Then give it a rinse and slice some onions. Good to go.👍

Oh ok I see. Yea forming an even forced patina can be pretty tough. I never got the kind of results I was after so now days I just stick with a natural patina and hope it forms semi evenly. Like you, I'll sometimes let some patina form and then kind of polish it up a bit with some compound and repeat until it darkens in the way that I'm (mostly) looking for. My favorite way to do this is to cold blue them which forms a very nice and even lustrous finish. It's easy to do too. However the bluing isn't supposed to be very good for knives that you use for processing food, so on those I'll just let the patina form naturally.

Yea Carhartt pants are what I've had the best luck with too. One of my pair of work pant are Carhartts and even those ended up losing the 5th pocket and the front right pocket fraying like crazy. Now days I try to carry knives that are a bit smoother under the clip so it doesn't happen as much. Yea, maybe I'll get out the old needle and thread and see what I can do. 🤙
