Traditional and Modern pairings

Breaking out the workhorses today.

Yup. It lives in the grey area, so you never see pictures of mine :)

I really like the round nick for opening. If it didn't have the jimping it would be easier to fit it into the traditional category. The Spydie Hole is just decoration.

I'm going to say the roadie is modern enough to not be considered traditional. Nice little knife though.

The Roadie. How have I missed that little knife until now? Kinda reminds me of a budding knife and I can't see anything modern, or non-traditional on the knife except for the brand name.

Slipjoint
No pocket clip
Lanyard hole (nothing new there)
FRN is hardly space age. Bakelite is over 100 years old, and no one bats an eye at Lightning Strike Carbon Fiber.
The blade steel is not exactly common, but not a super steel by any stretch.
Maybe it's the jimped choil?(linked only for credit on the photo, not to involve or reference any other person/people)

Maybe not?
Could it be the dents?
The exact blade shape and body shape may not be found in Levine's guides, but close enough can be I'm sure.

I absolutely respect that lines have to be drawn, and that they will be arbitrary sometimes, but I wonder if the brand name on the Roadie were Victorinox, or Boker, or Case instead of Spyderco if the perception would be different.
If so, I don't think that is fair to the knife itself is all I'm saying.

One of my favorite things to do in the morning is deliberate on what to pair with what:. These two sets are the most complimentary to each other out of what I have (IMHO)

Looks like you got the Dunlap you were after, congrats! He makes a great knife and that's a fantastic pair

These two for me today...

I can only agree strongly! It's a real joy to carry and use. Super light and slim, fit and finish is off the charts, and it's a looker to boot!

Speaking of lookers, that's quite the assortment you have there. I used to lust after the Kwaiken until I realized I just wanted to look at it all the time, but don't really have any kind of use for one.

I'm pretty new to patterns, but is that a dog leg jack? It looks incredible!

Two knives. One has a hole in the blade. It's a modern knife.

How about the thumb opening hole in the blade? I'd say that's a disqualifier. The rule has pretty much been - no thumb studs, no thumb holes, no clips.

Other than this thread, in which they're allowed, there are far too many moderns creeping into Traditionals
The whole is not functional, it's a trademark.

OK, Here's the deal. The original post about trad or not trad took this thread off topic. It also started a discussion which really doesn't belong in the thread, and should have been handled via PMs.

For the sake of some kind of explanation I offer the following.

There are grey lines. Spyderco being the manufacturer wasn't the only reason that my comment was made. I have nothing against Spyderco. I own and carry a few of them myself. There were enough things about that knife that indicated my grandpa would have been scratching his head looking at that. I'm an old guy. My grand dad was born in 1898.

All new, modern knives can be somehow compared with older knives and similarities found. There's not too much that can be done to a handle and a blade that hasn't been done already. That doesn't make them all traditional. Sometimes it's not an easy call. It really wasn't in this case. If that knife showed up now and then in the "What are you carrying today?" thread I probably would have overlooked it. When I'm asked, in the forum, to make a choice I have to think about the ramifications of that choice. I wasn't ready to decide that every funky looking knife that is a slip joint belongs in the Trad forum. If there wasn't a differentiation between traditional and modern there would be no reason for the Traditional sub-forum and we could all post in General. I could stop spending so much of my time trying to make sure the Trad forum is a comfortable, enjoyable place for those that like the atmosphere there.

My moderating partner, Knarfeng, already posted that he concurs with my statement about whether this knife does or doesn't belong in the Traditional forum. Since it's our call, and we're both pretty reasonable people, the decision is what it is.

Back to the knives, please. I like this thread. I've posted here 82 times myself. I'd hate to have to close it. It was a decision to allow a place where our members could show their appreciation for modern and traditional knives. It was never intended to be a place where we argue about what is or is not traditional. I don't want to see it not work out after all this time.

Two knives. Spyderco Cricket and a Camillius Whittler. The one with the hole in the blade is a modern knife.
