Traditional French Fry day

Had this colorful Opinel in my pocket today.

I know this is from a while back but it includes 2 of the patterns I keep going back to. Can you please give me your impressions of the Pialincu and the Capochadou as to edc and for everyday food use? Thanks.
Hi Alan, it's been a busy week and I haven't had time to stop by here until now.

I would have to concur with the other guys here, the Capuchadou isn't the best in hand. It actually reminds me of some old pistols from the 19th century. If I were to carry one, the smaller 10cm version feels better in hand but isn't the best for food prep because the blade really isn't long enough, especially for cutting onions! A 3.5" blade just seems to be the perfect size to me, but YMMV!

The Pialincu, on the other hand, is great in hand and is just about a perfect EDC size. For me though, still a tad short for food prep. The larger size, Sperone, is massive though. I'll post a comparison shot later today.

Le 5Coqs is my favorite Fontenille Pataud knife though. It's perfect for food prep, carries smaller than it is and is pretty unique looking also. I guess it all comes down to personal preference! So many choices that I couldn't pick just one!

I agree with you on this Pattern, Steve!! It's great looking, carries well, and is very functional!!
If I didn't already have so many users, I'd EDC it frequently!!FP Yssingeaux Bocote 1.jpgFP Yssingeaux Bocote 2.jpgFP Yssingeaux Bocote 3.jpgFP Yssingeaux Bocote 4.jpg

I know it's not Friday, but just wanted to post a few photos for joeradza joeradza

Here is the Pialincu with the Vendetta, which is basically the same as the Sperone, but a slipjoint version. One thing that's hard to see in most pictures is that on the bolstered versions, they are pretty thin at the bolster, but much thicker at the butt end of the handles, especially the Vendetta and Sperone. This alone makes me much prefer the smaller Pialincu.

The Vendetta is 3/4" thick at the end while the Pialincu measures approximately .64"

The shadow pattern versions are basically the same thickness throughout, which makes for a pretty big chunk in your pants.... Sheath carry for sure, although the Pialincu is still much more manageable in a pocket.

This Sperone is just over 3/4" at the thickest part.

Alan, good luck on your search!

Thanks Steve. Wonderful comparison photos. It would be an easy decision if I wasn't trying to narrow it down to one special knife. I'd buy a bunch but I'm looking for one in particular to celebrate my 75th birthday in 10 days. I'm still leaning towards the 10cm Capuchadou but the Laguiole is still in the running.
Edit: The shadow versions of the Pialincu are really nice!

The 10 com Capuchadou is a fein knife. I‘ve got one with Juniper scales and love it very much. Having said that I even love the 10 cm version called ‚Le Chamois’ even more. It‘s got the same handle but a different blade. Just to make the decision a bit more difficult for you. ;)

More pictures at Fontenille Pataud.

You guys are killing me. Here's my thinking the shadow ram's horn Pialincu is everything you could want. From looks to size and weight. The one thing it's missing is a desirable mouche. So, it's in 3rd place. That leaves the 10cm ebony Capuchadou or the pocket Laguiole. Back and forth, back and forth. I can't decide and I can't afford both, so what's a guy to do?corsican-pialincu-classic-full-handle-ram-horn.jpglaguiole-le-pocket-classic-range-ebony.jpgScreenshot_20220406-154717_Chrome.jpg

I suggest sending an email to the Yann at F-P asking if the shop can create a special Pialincu for you with a custom mouche. The worst that can happen is that he says no. Explain that it's for your 75th birthday, and the only thing giving you pause is the mouche that they use on that knife.

They have a scallop that would match what John Lloyd put on one of his knives for me.592.jpgIMG_7838-1024x869.JPG

The stone costs extra Ray, and FP's selection is pretty sparse. There are only a half-dozen choices IIRC.
If I go with an ebony classic I can add the stone for less than what a "friend" will end up charging. The lack of embellishment is only on the blade spine (which is a bonus) for me and the liners on the blade well.

Sounds great. I don't favor guillochage on the blade or blade well either.

The translucence of the Ram's horn handles really appealed to me on this FP Laguiole!!
I couldn't Bear to pass it up!! Resistance was futile!! 🤣

I can see why Charlie. I only have 1 laguiole currently at the moment, though I already have my eye on another and eventually intend to own laguioles with full covers of what I consider the three most traditional French woods -- buis, genevrier and noyer. However, I think I also need a laguiole with blonde, and hopefully translucent, horn covers.

Your pictures are not helping. 😂
