Jack, what made me think of the button spanner you sent me was the very first pic in your post about old threads, shown below. You're very kind Gary, but most of those pics are very utilitarian ones taken some years agoI'm not sure about a candled-holder being a tool, or knife rests!
It's nice to see them though, along with that old button spanner
I have another somewhere I think. I'll try to find some time this week to take more pics

Isn't that a button spanner on the far left, midway down from top of photo??A few posters might remember my Round Yorkshire With A Knife threads (random example), my Wizard's Quest threads (random example), or my later 'Table' threads (random example). I came across a few photos, mainly from the latter threads, which show a few tools, along with the knives, and might be of interest

I think your knife is a lot better quality than mine. Here are the rest of my wife's pink-and-black tools (at least the ones I could find in the dresser on the back porch):

It is indeed Gary, I'll have to have a search, though I may have given that one away too. Few tools become obsolete, but button spanners no longer have a function, so we won't see any more sadly. An interesting piece of history I thinkJack, what made me think of the button spanner you sent me was the very first pic in your post about old threads, shown below.

maybe a daft question but what is a button spanner? It is indeed Gary, I'll have to have a search, though I may have given that one away too. Few tools become obsolete, but button spanners no longer have a function, so we won't see any more sadly. An interesting piece of history I think![]()
In ye olden days, when machinery was driven by belts (originally made of leather) connected to overhead drive shafts, the belts were held together with 'buttons', so that they could be changed/replaced. The spanners were used for thatmaybe a daft question but what is a button spanner?
