No, I didnโ€™t know Merlin Rupp but a Google search turned up some pictures, he did have a good one. Thatโ€™s quite a โ€˜stache in your picture on Dwight too. Maybe Iโ€™ll be in the running one day!
First time I met Merlin was at The Californios up in Redbluff. This would have been 23-24 years ago as Nichole and I weren't married yet. He came into our booth and he had a couple of reatas and 4/5 mecates over his arm and a pocketful of braided hondos. He wanted to know what I would take in trade for Nichole. I think he was half serious. We did do some trading but not for Nichole, I kept her. I got several hondos for some wildrags.

ALL of the content in this post is so very cool, That 'stache is something else - whew! Our very good friend Mr. Dave Gentry has a mighty 'stache - it's pretty darned cool!

Every detail in the Horses gear, the gear that people are wearing etc - I'm loving looking at this- as a New Zealander- we just don't see this stuff, mind you we have our big Farms at "the back" but I'm guessing nothing like the bigger Countries like Australia and the States.

Ok.....I am going to do it.....

Because I don't know, maybe there might not be too many kicks coming in when I hit the dirt, so here goes.....

When you post your great photo's - everyone is wearing real tidy gear- the Chaps are always clean and mint etc, Im figuring that if you spend a couple of days on a horse working - they would be looking pretty broken in by then, so would this mean that you guys have different gear for different types of gatherings?

I hope I'm not offending anyone, but I always admire what I see, and the question pops up now and then- so I need to quieten down the noise in my head by knowing the answer. ๐Ÿคฃ
Ah yes my friend, there's a multifaceted answer to your question. Yes that pic above was at a show so folks do have their kinda good stuff on. In the Californio tradition the good stuff can be very much the good stuff! $$$$$$$. My reins cost more than my horse, literally and they don't have any silver on them. And I like this horse!

But at the same time we use this stuff. Here's an old pic with me on the left. I made all three sets of these leggings. You can see that my leggings have seen a lot of use.

We use the term legging as there are several different types of leggings or chaps and so leggings is more encompassing. I'm wearing a pair of charmitas, Monty in the middle has a pair of chinks on as does Dwight above. Steve is also wearing a pair of charmitas. Chinks is not a derogatory racial term at all to us. It's from the Spanish chingaderas which very roughly translates as something little or small or of little significance. I was always told the translation was "little s..ts." Anyhoo they are generally shorter and in the old days could be very short. Now a days most ya see are ankle length. Nichole in this pic is wearing a pair of shotguns:

They are full length and close around each leg with a zipper. They are called shotguns well think double barrel shotgun and you can see why theyโ€™re called that. They are warm and even though that was quite a while ago I remember it being cold enough that there was more than coffee in that cup. There was coffee too. Anyhoo you can see that my charmitas are pretty worn and have seen a lot of use.

Branding is a big deal on many ranches. We'll have friends and fam come and help. Ya almost kinda dress up fro a branding. Nichole here and our daughter Alyssa:

We might start a branding pretty clean but may not end up that way:

Anyhoo it's just what ya kinda do.

Now another consideration is that we make a lot of this stuff. So ya might see some "stock" pics that we take of new gear. For instance this set of woolies that Alyssa is modeling for us:

Heck even I get into the modeling gig on occasion:

We try to take pics of just about everything we make so when ya see something pristine it might be on us before it heads to the customer.

I think much of this comes from our Californio Vaquero heritage and school of stockmanship. I was helping a guy over the internet in Florida many years ago. He was learning how to use a rawhide hackamore (a training stage here in California). I was helping him with this as it's kinda intricate and I do have quite a bit of experience riding in the hackamore. He was doing some research too and was looking at a lot of old books. He emailed me one time and I remember what he said even all these years gone by. He says you guys and those pics of the old days from the books here in California, you guys always look a like your going to church when you go to work cattle. I look at books from here in Florida, and Colorado and other parts of the west not influenced by you Californios and it looks like we got up and put on our best burlap gunny sacks. Hope this helps. Nichole and our son Logan.
