Recommendation? Traditionals and shorts?

Hey guys, here in Central Pa the weather has made the final jump from winter to spring(83 degrees as I'm typing this), and I've ran into a little problem. I reached out to grab my 73, and as I was about to drop it into my watch pocket I realized, I have no watch pocket on my shorts! So my question is.. How does the rest of the Porch carry their traditionals when they're wearing shorts?

The three possibilities I've come up with is, a pocket slip, a lanyard tied to my belt to keep it upright and secure(lambertiana recommended this a few months ago), or just letting it carry loose. Since I don't own a pocket slip, I can't really give that a go, and while I wouldnt mind throwing a lanyard on I'm just trying see if there's another option or two I haven't thought of yet. So any of your methods would be welcome! Thank you in advance.

Because the nice weather I pulled my KLR out and got her back into shape. I have a habit of riding in shorts too, so my 73'll have to be secure enough to come along on my rides.

I’m prone to slouch when I sit (and cross legs), perfect combination for a knife to slip out of loose pair of shorts.
The top one is a magnet job that keeps knife at the top of the pocket. When I’m wearing jeans I don’t normally carry in a slip.
Good looking knife, I hope you find what best works for you. Odeimage.jpg

Smatchet!!!

Oops, sorry, wrong forum ;)

Do your shorts have flaps on the back pocket? Most of my shorts and pants that do not have a watch pocket have flaps on the back pockets, and I put my traditional there (I carry my wallet in the front pocket, so loose knife carry in the front pocket is a no go for me).

 I really like that bottom left billfold/wallet/slip thing! Where does one find such an object? I wish to own one. Naow!

I'm giving it a go at carrying it loose right now. I am starting to think a slip would be the best choice for me, but we'll see, haha.

Any time I have something loose in my pockets on the bike, like my phone or other keys I'm always patting myself down while riding to make sure it's still safe. I'm gonna take a quick ride to see if I think it's secure enough to stay there. My short's pockets are usually really deep so that should help.

Most of them do, that's usually where my wallet and keys sit, though. Right front pocket is my dedicated knife pocket. No matter shorts or jeans it seems.

I NEVER wear shorts, but I still own a pair with a watch pocket, and two more which have a small waistband pocket, on the front, which is even better than a watch pocket! :D

I'm the type of guy where once the weather heats up I'm wearing shorts up til mid Fall. I tend to heat up a lot quicker than I cool down, so shorts are the best way to stay comfortable.

Some of my shorts actually have a small pocket sewn inside the main pocket, with those I could just position it to slip it in there, but none of mine actually have a watch pocket(seems I need some, though!).

Lucky you! Another snow storm on its way to the Midwest.

I'm a cargo pants guy, long or short. When in dress slacks I either throw the knife in with the other things or use a slip. Slips are worth the small cost compared to what a lot of us spend on our knives.

Losing a knife is a different issue. I use a foot long lanyard made of doubled up paracord with a snap clip between it and the knife. The tag end goes around a belt loop first, then the lanyard loop, and the knife into a pocket. The length is long enough to often use the knife without unclipping. Here's my lanyard on a Douk-Douk:

I wear mine loose in the pocket or in a slip, but if I were riding a motorcycle or a bicycle I'd probably make sure I had it in a deep position or carried it in shorts that had some closure pocket.

When I was a kid, boys wore short trousers 365 days a year, even when there was snow! Excluding running or in the gym, I've never worn them a great deal since, even when I've lived in hot countries, and the weather rarely encourages them here. I recall wearing them in Austria a couple of times, about 7 or 8 years ago - the regular kind, not the leather ones! I have occasionally worn them at home or in the garden, but it's a few years since I did either. As a consequence, while the rest of me is from Yorkshire, my legs look like they come from Scotland! :D

Nice KLR... 1990?

I ride daily, pretty much year around (unless there's snow on the ground) including slacks with "slash cut" pockets like your shorts probably have. I always wear long pants on two wheels though, 120 degree asphalt is pretty uncomfortable to lay on for a while when you come unhorsed and injured in anything but full motorcycle gear (ask how I know )

Carrying my knife with a wadded up bandana on top of it Carl Style is my favorite way to go. I have some shorts that have a cargo pocket on the right side that I carry in because it has a flap over the pocket. I also will carry an Alox Victorinox on a little S clip on the edge of my pocket, if I feel like carrying a Vic... I also carry a Fantoni Dweller a lot in the summer - it's really lightweight in rough finished Micarta which works like Velcro in my pocket and helps keep it from slipping out.

You may find carrying loose in your shorts pocket a little unsettling for fear of losing her like willard0341 mentioned. I prefer shorts with an assortment of multiple pockets like the little half pocket in the top front position that OP's brand(Ocean Pacific) or BR's brand(Banana Republic) has. Or a leather belt sheath, a leather buckaroo sheath or a lanyard if the knife has a ring.. I guess I'm the opposite of Jack Black in that I wear shorts nearly every day do to the weather down here in the south and the comfort level they provide.

In athletic shorts, knives are easy to lose! I carry in a velvet pouch, that holds the knife in my pocket and doubles as some protection for it from my keys.

I just don't find they mix too well. If I go biking in the summer I may wear shorts but no way would I trust a knife in them then, knives go in the pack. I suppose you could attach a knife with a bail to a belt loop, but I don't much like that either, nor do I favour bails a lot...;)
