Recommendation? Traditionals and shorts?

.... I can't over stress this enough. Pockets that are sewn into the outseam of shorts or pants only serve to auto eject pocket knives.

Good point.. That's why many of the aforementioned posts mentioning leather knife slips, belt sheaths, lanyards and even handkerchiefs - bandannas are all good insurance against valuable knife loss/damage.

You may find carrying loose in your shorts pocket a little unsettling for fear of losing her like willard0341 mentioned. I prefer shorts with an assortment of multiple pockets like the little half pocket in the top front position that OP's brand(Ocean Pacific) or BR's brand(Banana Republic) has. Or a leather belt sheath, a leather buckaroo sheath or a lanyard if the knife has a ring.. I guess I'm the opposite of Jack Black in that I wear shorts nearly every day do to the weather down here in the south and the comfort level they provide.

Cargo shorts for me. If they only have the 4 normal pockets or less, I won't buy them. So much easier to just have the 2 extra large leg pockets. I have a pair with 9 pockets that I like best!

I'm with you on this to be certain JP. I like cargo shorts with many pockets to carry multiple slipjoints and other valuable good gear/stuff. I have on a favorite pair of OP's with 12 pockets right now :D that I got for Christmas from my better half several years ago.

I actually just remembered seeing something a while back, it was a lanyard with a standard clip attached(no slip) that clipped in your pocket like a modern knife does.. Any one have experience with one of them? If I recall correctly, it clips on your pocket and has a lanyard attached to the knife and you can adjust the length so it keeps the knife upright against the seam.

That sounds like a dangler to me. Unless you have extraordinarily deep pockets I don't think you'll need much length between the bottom of the dangler and the knife. harronek posted one further up:

Secure pockets sometimes.

However if your shorts don't have secure pockets might I suggest:

Yeah he did! And that's even the picture I remember seeing too! For some reason I looked right passed it and saw the clipped slip. Funny how the mind works, huh?

They look like they'd be great for shorts. As long as the clip retention is high, that'd be perfect I think. I'm glad you named it or else I'd have to google "slip joint clip lanyard thing", haha.

Horsewright Horsewright I think I'd be the first recorded instance of spontaneous combustion in Pa if those are the type of shorts I'd have wear during the summer.

M McFeeli -most outfits that sell SAKs sell accessories for them, try checking there. Also, try typing in knife suspension clip, or without the knife, should bring up a company that sells them. Available at BHQ or Knifecenter. Good luck, keep it rubber side down.
Thanks, Neal

I just throw it in my right front pocket with my keys. The keys usually keep it at the bottom and when I sit down I put my hand in my pocket and push the pocket down towards the ground so nothing falls out. The only problems I’ve had is if I don’t do that. My phone falls out more than my knife ever has though.

Hey there Horsewright, I was curious about the bottom (2) photos regarding the leather/swade pocketknife sheath/pouch with the lanyard. I know it named as a, 'buckaroo'.. Haven't seen one of those in a while. It's cool to see one again.

Knife under folded hanky is a tried and true method for me in long or short pants.
For several months now, I've also been using a method I learned from @redsparrow (used by others, too) that keeps a knife rock solid immobile and vertical along the "inboard" edge of my front left pocket by simply using a safety pin to make a little sheath out of the pocket material itself. It's described here, but unfortunately the very helpful photos were hijacked by photobucket.

Over the past 5 or 6 years TAD Gear Force 10 RS or Recon AC shorts have been my go to's in the hot Midwest summer months. I own 3 pair of each. They have a small pocket sewn inside the main pocket that's perfect for a slippie. That being said they have significantly raised the price on their shorts and I have been moving away from TAD in recent years to Arcteryx.

I have only one pair of shorts like that, I think, but it does seem like it would be a perfect place for my 73 to sit. I'll give that shot some time to see if it works out.

5K Qs 5K Qs that seems like ingenious idea! It took me a little while to construct it in my mind, but I think I get it. Something like that could only come out of BladeForums!

I've had single-spring knives slip out of my pockets before, but never a two or three layer SAK. A bit of bulk can be your friend. That said, I carry a single spring knife most of the time and have no problems - but I always buy shorts that have deep pockets and have only a minimal amount of front pocket pouch sewn into the outseam. I can't over stress this enough. Pockets that are sewn into the outseam of shorts or pants only serve to auto eject pocket knives.

Very true. I still miss my little Western I lost that way.

I live in FL and wear shorts year round. I work construction framing and roofing in shorts. I never lose stuff falling out my pockets. I EDC a case trapper loose in my pocket. I never wear boots either.

And those chaps previously posted looks like a mans dress. Probably make fun of the Irish for their kilts but its just as silly.

I wear shorts maybe five times a year. But when I do, I usually wear those synthetic quick dry hiking cargo shorts. These have very slippery pockets and though I have yet to lose a knife, I think I need to make myself one of those slips that's tethered to a belt loop like Horsewright. That being said, I don't usually carry a small traditional in those shorts. If I'm wearing shorts, it usually means I'm biking or on a long hike, and in that case I'm carrying my Leatherman.

Funny you mention your KLR, I too was freshening up my old blue and white dirt bike yesterday. Mine is a 1986 Honda TR200 "Fatcat". Only made for two years, 86 and 87, it's essentially a two-wheeled three-wheeler and an excellent trail and sand bike with it's floaty tires, low seat and auto clutch.

I have a pair of jeans...somewhere. I wore slacks once a couple years ago when I had to testify in court. All I wear is shorts.

I carry my traditional knife/knives in my right front pocket, which also has my modern knife (clipped) and my phone. Left pocket has keys, wallet, and SAK. Various knives and/or other things in the cargo pockets

Naw they take some wear and tear so your legs don't.

Hot iron, sharp knife, struggling pissed off bovine, leggings not a bad idea. Shorts...bad idea.

Reality is they present a different question, that has the same answer as shorts.

Wearing leggings of some kind ya can't get to your pocket knife when ya need it. That's why the buckaroo pouch was developed. Pull on the thong and ya can get to your knife. Also happens to fix the falling out of the shorts pocket syndrome too.

Look M McFeeli those dang cargo shorts going up in smoke again!

Now there's the real deal! I'd be pissed too if you held me down to poke me with a hot iron and remove my boys with an old case.
