Recommendation? Traditionals and shorts?

Well I've been living loose for a whole, uh.. 9 hours or so and while I do miss how snug and neat it fits in my watch pocket, I really didn't have as much as a problem with it as I expected.

I did take the bike out for an hour or so, first couple miles I frequently slapped myself in the thigh to make sure it was ok, and it was, haha. Test ride complete.

I think I will snag a pocket slip for it one of these days, I do think I'd like that a lot more when I'm wearing shorts. I'm still very curious to know how other people deal with their traditionals in shorts. There's a lot of different options so I'm betting I'll hear a wide variety of answers(already have!). Thanks again for the great suggestions.

HeathH HeathH it's actually an '87. Runs really well for its age! I've put a lot of TLC(aka money and time, haha) into it and it's been pretty rewarding. Just a week ago I ended up replacing the shims in anticipation of this warm weather.

M McFeeli The OG! Very nice, I don't think I've ever seen an '87 in the flesh, and I've seen a lot of KLRs (I used to work at Happy Trails Products, I've probably replaced 300 Doohickeys)

Another good knife option is a lightweight shadow pattern like a Case Sodbuster Jr. I feel a lot more comfortable and confident carrying a lightweight knife in shorts. The fact that they're so cheap helps relieve some of those fears too. A $25 Case is not as painful to lose as a hard-to-find GEC :D

When I was a kid, boys wore short trousers 365 days a year, even when there was snow! Excluding running or in the gym, I've never worn them a great deal since, even when I've lived in hot countries, and the weather rarely encourages them here. I recall wearing them in Austria a couple of times, about 7 or 8 years ago - the regular kind, not the leather ones! I have occasionally worn them at home or in the garden, but it's a few years since I did either. As a consequence, while the rest of me is from Yorkshire, my legs look like they come from Scotland! :D

Hold on a second while I put on my sunglasses..... :D

I always keep my knife loose in my front pocket with my keys and a pen. I've never really found the coin pocket on jeans big enough for anything larger than a peanut-sized knife (though I know there are some brands that offer jeans with much larger coin pockets).

I love it. Kawasaki didn't change anything but the plastic for what, 25 years? That speaks for itself. Luckily I got the tool kit that comes with them as well, I've had to use it a time or two already. It's just a classic dual sport motorcycle. Emphasis on "classic", haha.

I plan on getting another slip joint(not sure what) some time, but while I am a bit worried about losing mine from it falling out of my pocket, I'm more looking to find the most comfortable way to carry one in shorts. Loose isn't as bad as I've come to learn, but I definitely know it's there(good for motorcycle/not too good for comfort).

And yes Henry Beige Henry Beige I often ride and wear shorts during the summer. I'm a stickler for helmets, but that's about it. For trail rides or long, long trips I'll wear jeans, but when I'm thumping around the county shorts rule!

And cargo shorts make up the majority of my attire. All brands put their pockets at different places so some can work, some won't. I know I won't stick anything heavy down by my knee or else it'll get beat on every step I take.

I don't really wear shorts unless they're cargo shorts bc I need something with belt loops to wear my pistol and then I have a little belt sheath that fits a mini trapper and anything the size of a case medium stockman image.jpg

I have no watch pocket on my shorts! So my question is.. How does the rest of the Porch carry their traditionals when they're wearing shorts?

Some times I wear shorts that has no belt just a draw string or a built in belt.
I like this leather pouch that has a metal clip. It can go on a belt or over the band of shorts.
Fits smaller knives like the medium stockman or the SAK with the flap over the top of the knife. For larger knives like the Case Trapper I tuck the flap out of the way behind the clip.
I have a few of these pouches so they fit the larger knife just right and that pouch stays with that knife only.

I usually don’t wear shorts until it’s about 80° I pretty much stick it in my front right pocket as usual, if I’m wearing dress pants I let my knife go into the little watchpocket that’s down inside the pocket, A possibility that I think has been overlooked especially for larger knives would be a belt sheath. Edit.I was not paying attention to the post above

If your shorts allow for a belt use a belt sheath .

If your like me and wear gym type shorts without belt loops but just a drawstring , then I'm going to use some words that gets people in trouble around here " Pocket clips " .

If your knife alows for a lanyard get a pocket clip attachment and either clip the knife inside the pocket or my personal favourite inside your waistband ( IWB )

If you can't attach a clip to the knife , then get a pocket clip sheath made , again I prefer clipped IWB

If you cant do that then get a slip that has either a chain or cord and attach the other end to the draw string of your shorts

I've had single-spring knives slip out of my pockets before, but never a two or three layer SAK. A bit of bulk can be your friend. That said, I carry a single spring knife most of the time and have no problems - but I always buy shorts that have deep pockets and have only a minimal amount of front pocket pouch sewn into the outseam. I can't over stress this enough. Pockets that are sewn into the outseam of shorts or pants only serve to auto eject pocket knives.

I want to thank everyone for the suggestions again! I'm really curious because up until a few months ago I carried strictly modern knives(occasionally my 303 found its way into my pocket). With those you don't really have to question how to carry it(just clip it, haha). I've seen a whole lot of different slips, lanyards, and belt pouches on this site and it's good see how many options are there.

I actually just remembered seeing something a while back, it was a lanyard with a standard clip attached(no slip) that clipped in your pocket like a modern knife does.. Any one have experience with one of them? If I recall correctly, it clips on your pocket and has a lanyard attached to the knife and you can adjust the length so it keeps the knife upright against the seam.

I really like that design harronek harronek that's just plain cool!

After reading that you had me reaching inside my pockets and pulling the leg up to see where they were sewn into, haha. Probably looked like nutter. That's good information, though! Some of my short's pockets are designed like that, they even have tendency to push clipped knives out.

I agree about the weight as well, but I've lost a Leatherman Freestyle straight out of my pocket before, now the copious amount of beer I drank that night may have been the cause, but I blame the pockets!
