Trevor Ablett RIP

You're right. I thought you were speaking of post 55's picture! My distraction

Sorry, I was my friend, but then I was comparing the stag on the Ettrick shown in Tweedale's book to that on Charlie's knife, they both have much better stag than those of recent years. Here's the stag on my Sheepsfoot for example, and not long after Trevor was having to jig camel bone.

More Abletts and an A.Wright, from Tasmania - the down-under of Down-under!!:)

The top knife has Peach-pruner and Ettrick blades. The second knife is a 4" Pruner, and the third is a fancy W.Wright Ettrick with nice filework and and coined liners all the way'round!
Wright and Ablett must have known each other don't you think??

Nice additions to your collection Charlie. I'd guess that the Arthur Wright Ettrick is older stock, as the Trevor Ablett knives certainly are. A 'Barlow' Pruner eh?! ;) The blades are from the same source, before Trevor started putting his name on his knives (and possibly after too), he produced work for Wrights (and probably some of the other Sheffield names I imagine)

Gifted to me by Elliott

And I gifted to a gardener, a two bladed Ettrick in rosewood, like above

The folks from Tasmania who sold me the Abletts told me they met Trevor in Sheffield in 2004. By 2007 they had purchased (as Joan put it) a LOT of knives! This continued until 2011 or so. Joan jokingly implied that they may have been responsible for the stag shortage!!

She has 4 or 5 Ettricks left - all others are sold out. She and her late husband helped provide a period of prosperity for Mr. Ablett!

From what you have said Charlie, Joan sounds lovely, and it's nice to find such great service. It was sad to visit several places that formerly sold Trevor's knives in Sheffield yesterday, and see them absent. I was heartened though, to see that other Sheffield-made pocket knives have taken their place, and I think that it will still be a long time before the last pocket knife is made in Sheffield

I have bought a few knives from Tasmania and I just can't say like Charlie . A pleasure to deal with and lots of fine and rare Sheffield knives. This the magic of the Internet! :D

There's at least one site (edit : in GB) to find a few T. Ablett's knives, but prices have nearly doubled as choice is narrowing... Hopefully TEW, A Wright and Eggington keep the fire burning.

This arrived during the week and extremely fast delivery from Tasmania....

Really delighted with it, great W&T, very nice thick Stag that begs to be held. The wraparound spring is a nice touch too, better finished than my Barlow but still purposeful. A fine thing to be remembered for Mr Ablett.

A pleasure to see and a pleasure (you had) to deal with the seller. Two great persons (TA and Joan).

You are absolutely correct JP. What a change politeness and sincerity make!

Thanks, Will

That is a fine looking knife Will !!!!? Did you really order that from Tasmania ????

Harry

Great-looking knife Will, the stag is much nicer than anything I saw on Sheffield knives in the last decade or so

That's a beauty, Will! Yours and mine were from the last few that Joan had in stock. It must have been a spectacular batch of knives! Obviously from before the stag shortage that TA encountered.

Harry Yes, it came all the way from there back to Europe! Actually, it arrived really fast, I've got something from Britain that's taking much longer for some bizarre reason.

Jack Thank you, nice to hear. The presentation box says 2008 but I've an idea it's older somehow.

Charlie Actually, thanks are due to you. :D You gave me the idea to contact her and I was very lucky to get such a nice example (plus very friendly competent service) Thick stag with enough bark on both sides but I do like the way he shaped the antler to correspond to the facets on that rather unusual bolster, decent work all round.

Obviously from before the stag shortage that TA encountered.

The shortage has been caused by the Indian export ban on the Sambar stag that has traditionally been used in Sheffield Charlie. Most cutlers had some stock, and cutlers like Stan Shaw haven't been affected, but for most, it has made a big difference.
