Tri Ad Lock Failure

There are other reasons Robert Vaughn held the knives like he did. One reason is that much negative pressure on the blade + a reverse grip is a good way to close the knife on your hand. The ergonomics weren't built to accomodate the balls out full body english spine whack.

Yeah it's easy to press the lock down doing the way he did it.

That's why I hold the knife back a lot farther and snapped my wrist holding onto the sides of the handle.

I went out and beat the crap out of my AL after I saw that hitting it like 20 times VERY hard and it didn't fail.

I just double posted?...

Ankerson man, if there is one thing to be learned from this vid it's turn on the camera before you maim yourself. :) I think they wanted to put more emphasis on the overstrikes in these last vids than the spine whacks. It's produces a much more realistic damage effect on the mechanism. Especially on say, a Rajah II where a big chopping motion overstrike might cause a blade to fail.

Hissatsu5 has plenty of good videos. +1 for posting one where he didn't baul like a girl when his addmittedly inadviseable test went awry to the finger bone.

Few things, put multiple layers of tape on it if you are going to do something like this. I don't think it was inherently dumb, but he could've been "safer". I'm talking 10-15 layers of thick tape so you are absolutely sure the blade won't get through the tape. Possibly even a rubber guard on top of that. Wear some thicker gloves or even two pair.

Was going to a hospital even necessary? The amount of bandages for that tiny cut made me think he had third degree burns across his hands or something. I think many of us have been bladed much worse than that and treated it ourselves. Didn't look very serious to me and seemed pretty clean which is much better for healing. A little medical superglue (regular if in a jam) and you are good to go.

I know he has a lot of good ones. :)

Over Strikes can really damage the lock especially on larger knives.

I want to know who is going to hit the back of a knife that hard to make that happen. Accidental lock activation or not, I consider it a stupid "test".

I used to play baseball and one day I didn't have a bat... I used the spine of my cold steel knife equipped with a tri ad lock. I won the game for our team that day.

Nothing broke. Its operator error plain and simple. He depressed the lock bar and the lock freed itself from the impact and allowed the blade to cut him and bounce back to snap open and lock again its that simple.
I guarantee you if you looked at that knife and tested it again not depressing the rocker arm that it would perform the tests admirably. It still locked up fine after he was cut. Mid locks and front locks have this potential for depressing the lock release. Thats why Spyderco started using the Boye Detent on their rocker arms.

I don't understand the purpose of this test. What real-world occurrence does this even simulate?

It really doesn't, but it is a valid test if done correctly to see if the lock is working properly and or within tolerances.

I believe in more of the spine tap instead of the very hard whacking or pounding.

Over strikes will do a lot more damage and stress it out even more than the Spine Whack.

Feel better now? Were you worried?

No, not at all. :D

It is a test knife so you know how it is, that's why I got it.

It's still good as new except for some wear on the blade coating.:cool:

Zero blade play. :)

Interesting video.

It looks like the tester needs to change his grip (just the end of the knife handle) and use insulated gloves (like welders gloves).

Its very easy to be exerting pressures in places you are not aware of when wearing gloves. The gloves add bulk and so even though it may feel like you are gripping here you can actually be exerting pressures both here and there so to speak.
As the old saying goes, "play with fire long enough you are going to get burned."

Yeah, biggest clues are where he held the folder, how he held it and that after the butchering (how horrific, all 1/2 inch of it, ain't even bleeding much, I got a Sog Tomahawk on the back of my hand now thats damage, fountain of blood blah blah blah .....) the folder locked up fine again. If the locking interface had damge it ain't gonna open/close like in the vid.
