Trophy Room - Hunting and Fishing Pics

Great story, Riz! I remember the missed deer as much as the rest, mostly because I think about what I should have done differently in each one.

Yup. I'm on the same page Riz. Bagging the animals is the ultimate goal but does not necessarily make the hunt or the hunter. Every hunt is potentially a learning experience - be it learning to use equipment more efficiently, using weather and surroundings to certain advantages, learning techniques to get critters to come in closer, reading animal sign, learning to calm your nerves, etc. it's why I will never grow tired of chasing fin, fowl, or fur

It was the first time I hunted with a longbow and the first spot and stalk and the first time not shooting from a treestand

If you get into them consistently you're going to be laying one down before long. I took my girl elk hunting the last few days. Covered a pile of country and got into cows everyday but were both holding bull tags. My buddy was able to get up there for opening day and took a bull, so it wasn't a total bust.

Sitting in the stand hoping the rut is starting. So far not...

Found a beautiful spot to attach the 4.7 on my pack.

Awesome! Good luck! I hope you pack your freezer tonight. If harvest a deer throw some pics in here.

Furred-up dog coyote

I'm all about putting a bullet into something so I can eat it, I don't think I could bring myself to kill a coyote though. I have nothing but respect for you man, hope you know that, I'm not condemning or bitching at you. I just think there are few enough predators in the wild as it is. I hope we can use prehistoric DNA to recreate sabre toothed tigers and turn them loose on the Midwest though, so take that for what it's worth :) Thin the deer, raccoons, squirrels, stupid people, perfect! My great grandpa had a lot of calf losses to 'yotes back in the day, he's high fiving you from the grave :D

Regardless of that philosophical nonsense.. what do you prefer for 'yote hunting? .556 used to be the thing here but it seems like people are gravitating towards lighter, faster loads nowadays.

And I'm not taking it that you are. You're making calls that are right for you where you live geographically. We have to do the same. Out here it is still very much 'back in the day' with losses of deer and stock to coyotes and other predators.

For example, last winter I was called out to catch a mountain lion that was seen near our elementary school. That is somewhat uncommon, however there are mountain lions that range regularly within 2 miles of town, I get called out to a ranch on the outskirts all the time. We very much live with the game and the predators here which I realize is much different than a large part of the country. I don't want to offend my friends here, though, so I can lay off posting pictures of them.

As far as rifles, .223 if I'm on stand and .243 in the truck. I've got a .204 with very little use that I'm excited to get some time behind, no real world use on that one yet.

Don't lay off on the pictures for my benefit. It was a beautiful coyote. I'm just running off at the mouth, like normal😂. One of Grandpa's most prized rifles was a .243 he used for antelopes, he always said it was his flattest shooting gun.

I've got more time behind a .243 than any other cartridge. It is definitely bad medicine for antelope. I love it as a truck gun out here in this big, open country where there are plenty of opportunities for long shots. Since I'm so familiar with its trajectory, I've been reluctant to fool around too much with other calibers, just to not throw off my hits on instinctive shots. But the .204 is such a little screamer, factory ammo is traveling at something like 4200 fps. I'm going to put some rounds down range with it this winter to satisfy my curiosity :)

HK,
I know that .204 is a screamer. I understand running it at 4200fps will wear on a barrel sooner and at .204" any wear will have a larger proportional effect than a larger caliber. Anyway... I believe some guys have amazing results with a heavier bullet at about 3900-4000fps that is lights out at anything inside 500 yards.

I'm sure it'll be a fun gun to work up some loads for nonetheless.

I'm thinking along that track TR, with slightly heavier loads. A good friend of mine is pushing 40 grain bullets in the high 3's that are dead accurate. I'll have to see what the gun likes, and I like for varmint rifles to shoot 1/2" MOA which they of course won't all do. This one is only shooting 1" MOA with factory 32 grain VMAX. I've only had it a very short time, so I've got some work to do.

Hard Knocks, great pics.

+ nothing like seeing pooches baying and intent on doing, what they do best.

When I hog hunt, Ive got nothing but respect for those efficient dogs.

Hot damn man! I won't hunt predators because I keep hoping they might smarten up and start taking people on a regular basis but those are some fabulous shots.
Say WHAT now!!??

Someday I hope to get to go hog hunting. We have none here, which from all accounts is a good thing I guess. These dogs certainly live for the hunt, and I guess I do too, lol :)

I'm glad you like the pictures, and thanks again for making me aware of the changes needed to my thread in the Great Outdoors. You pointed that out very gracefully and I certainly appreciated the opportunity to get it put straight.

Yeah, those hogs are a pest most places they reside. If people havent experienced, how fast they multiply and how theyll root up entire tracts of land, they most likely wouldnt believe if told.

Besides hog hunting is ...interesting. Especially with a knife and dogs.

You contribute some great outdoors/hunting tales/pics - keep up the excellent work and thanks for posting them:thumbup:

My hunting knife by Lon Humphrey. Didnt have my SURVIVE at that time.
