My response to the risk - adverse questions: you know we have CC here, and you're worried about this little thing? Tends to lighten things up.

I had a related incident on Christmas eve, my uncle asked if anyone had a knife and of course i did. So i was on duty of cutting all the plastic ties and tape from the kids toys, while my aunt looked around for scissors for about 15mins. And before she started looking for them, she said "no" as if it was silly to use a knife for that kind of thing. Its like some people have trouble accepting the point and usefulness of a knife.
I had all the presents opened by the time she got them and i could tell she was mad that she didnt see all the toys opened.

And a unrelated story from a couple weeks ago. I had to bicker with the post office lady that my spyderco ladybug wasnt a weapon, not considered a weapon, and almost impossible to use as a weapon. She literally said, "a knife is a weapon" and i thought my head was going to pop. Then she held the package that weighed nothing, and i explained the knife is smaller then my pinky finger told her to label it as a weapon then. But on her computer, under weapons, a knife isnt in there as that.

About 95% of people out there dont say crap like that, but i really wonder how many think it. Alot of people say 'cool' or 'pretty' knife!, but there always seems to be a look in their eye that tells them its some kind of taboo.

Sorry about the rant, but it makes me feel better getting it out there.

I used my balisong to pop off the zip ties of someone's Christmas presents and one of the grown ups ask me 'whoa is that for stabbing people'.

I twirled my knife closed and donned a huge creepy smile and winked.

What I heard all the while the grand kids and cousins were opening gifts was: "We need more grandpa knife."

I pulled out my 20 plus year old spyderco police to cut some tape to open a package and felt like I needed a smaller knife for those type of situations. I need to work on that I guess.

I get the same thing every year at Christmas. My parents ask me( what's wrong with you) my kids say your gonna go to jail someday lol so I ask them go to jail for what ? My 8 year old daughter says well, what if there is a murder near by and the police see how many knives are in your top drawer ? I'm honestly getting so sick of hearing crap like this all I can really come up with is go look in anyone's kitchen and I bet you they have a bunch of knives ? I'm guessing that being in the city has something to do with the stigma .

Hi Gang! Today, at the Christmas gathering, my niece asked if anyone had a knife to cut off a plastic tag on a new pair of socks. I said, I do, and cut the tag off. My niece then said to me, why do you have a knife?
All true.
rolf

I would have said something like this to her...

I have a knife in case any little giiirrrrrrls want to cut off plastic tags on any new pairs of socks... now what are you gonna do with those socks?

Hah! Some good posts in here! :D Sometimes all you can do is chuckle! (And hope that people give their head a shake)

Thanks, gang!
Shall I ever pull my knife again??!!
:D

Lead by example Lycosa... if she sees her uncle is a good man who carries a knife, then one day she won't even think of asking anyone else.

My most amusing experience was having my oldest daughter give me grief because she was the only family member I had never given a knife to. I hadn't ever thought of her as someone who would want one. That was before she bought her Glock. The problem has since been taken care of.
