True Story!

What baffles me is that most of these people who have this skewed view of pocket knifes (or of firearms in the house with children for that matter), often have a block of large kitchen knives sitting out on the counter easily accessible. As if a small folder is inherently more evil that a 8" chef's knife.

I'm luckily to have a family that realizes a knife is a tool. In fact, this year I had quite the opposite experience as many in this thread. I pulled out my blade to open a toy for my son, and one of my cousins was instantly in awe, and took it around to show everyone how cool it was.

Every Christmas it's the same thing, presents come out and with the way kids toys are packed it's only a moment before someone asks me if I have my knife, this is one of my favorite moments of the holiday; I can't explain why but I find so much joy when I reply " I have my pants on, don't I ".
Silly thing, but it makes me laugh inside every time.

Exactly. If I have pants on then I certainly have a knife and a flashlight on my person... Why do I have a knife? To cut things... Why do I have a flashlight? Because sometimes it's dark... Seems only logical to me

I pulled out my 20 plus year old spyderco police to cut some tape to open a package and felt like I needed a smaller knife for those type of situations. I need to work on that I guess.

That for sure does make a difference and I try to tailor my carry for where I'm going and who will be around. Thwacking out a 4+" flipper to cut the tape on wrapping paper just begs for negative commentary.

Lead by example Lycosa... if she sees her uncle is a good man who carries a knife, then one day she won't even think of asking anyone else.

..and by extension, this too. If we use our knives responsibly as tools and make no great show of opening/brandishing, those present may come to understand the practicality of carrying these most useful implements. As a knife-guy's wife, my sweetie has several good folders in her EDC rotation. Quite frequently, after using her blade she'll remark, "How can anyone not have a knife?"

The pants thing is kinda funny as I often would set my knife on the table next to my chair so I wouldn't have to dig for it when seated. Did the same with my mini pocket light. Then I'd find myself somewhere else in the house with no knife and no light. It felt way too weird, so I started keeping my carries in my pocket and was sure to have another blade and light on my table--a collection which often grows to several blades and a couple lights.

My son's live-in girlfriend joined us for Christmas this year. She often visits when they're up this way and used look over a bit apprehensively at my array. She's getting used to us now, and this year didn't bat an eye. I half expected her to reach over when she needed a cut to get her presents opened, but C helped her out with one of his EDCs.

One more note--Christmas is kinda like Knife Knut Knirvana. I really think we enjoy the dopey blade-o-phobic comments as much as any appreciation or admiration for the blades we proffer to aid in unwrapping all those holiday goodies. Plenty of grist for this mill in all of that. ;)

I was at a breakfast, where a couple of guys had some serious trouble opening up a pack of cheese.

I then pulled out my Lansky Madrock, and opened the pack of cheese for them.

Both looked baffled and asked me why I carry a knife on me.

Sad thing was; it was a crappy excuse for a cheese.

I'm lucky that I've never had my knife carry questioned, but my family does rip on me for carrying so many knives ( was usually 4 + my LM with blade I don't use ) often hearing things like " we all no where to turn if some zombies bust in " or " if anyone ever tried to kidnap you they'd never be able to keep the duck tape on you "
I have since cut back on my knife carry, but that's only because I've found knives that do more and negate the need for extra knives ( now 2 + my LM )

Some may be happy about the chance to totally school someone, but the thought of how many sheltered idiots out there are afraid of knives makes me sick🤒🤒🤒

Thanks for the replies!
We knuts know what to do, and not to do, so let's do it.

I bought myself a friendly looking knife for the few family outings I have coming up. Anyone think a Spyderco Pingo will turn heads?? :D

My family expects me to have a knife or a flashlight on me. Especially since my pocket knife is sharper then most kitchen knives that they have around (I try to keep them sharp but they insist on buying serrated knives and I am not too good at sharpening those)

I don't get comments too often as I work EMS- and a lot of my coworkers carry a knife as well.
