TSA baby-steps it towards more rational policy concerning knives on planes

Page five of this seems to indicate that any handle with curves to accommodate your fingers would count as molded:

So any word on how this will be implemented? Will the knife have to be declared or anything prior to getting on the plane? Or just dump it into the little keys/wallet/pocket items basket when going through the metal detector?

The continued ban on razor blades is still puzzling.

I shave with a classic safety razor. I've started shaving the morning before I leave and not again until I return home. It is ridiculously irritating and pointless. I understand that razors are sharp (obviously) and could do some damage, but seriously if I needed a weapon on a plane I think a good heavy watch in moderately skilled hands is far more dangerous that a 2.37 inch knife or a flimsy shaving razor. Actually ignore all of that, I don't want my watches banned too... Though it does look like I may have to finally buy a SAK

The half an inch wide part is what makes it hard :( Thats going to rule out most stuff except little pen knives.

You might be able to take one of those Chinese karambits cutting off a good bit of the blade edge and regrinding, provided you could leave enough for the locking bar and wave to still work. Since the blade is already only 2.5 inches it would probably work. The handle is as long as a 3.5" folder, but they don't seem to care about the handle. I wonder if the ring violates something though?

This would be a pretty serious self-defense weapon.

Update: Scratch that. Locking blade. Strictly speaking you could also cut off the lock bar and put in some kind of resistance setup. The handle is pretty clearly "molded" but I have no idea what that means at the margin. Don't all folding knives have molded handles?

Oh, I think I know what it means. They mean no fixed neck knives where the handle is part of the blade.

Put a heavy watch inside a sock and swing it. That'll get your attention quick!

so pen knives, peanuts, maybe a canoe? most SAK's are to long, the squeak and pingo by spyderco are short enough but im not sure about the width. I'm glad they are starting to relax it, hopefully they continue to become more and more relaxed. But right know, i agree, those regs are completely ridiculous.

Progress is always good. I am glad that they realized that a classic sak is not a weapon.

Good question does a texas jack count as a molded handle?

Not worth the time to read the document. Who needs a tiny knife on the plane and take the risk of an idiot that can't measure or understand the rules checking the terrorist box on my ticket. Convoluted changes are like that for a reason: to confuse the hell out out of the average Joe so they still leave their knives athome so we don't have to rely on the TSA officers to figure it out at the airport.

This is sort of like being told you're allowed to talk to women as long as you agree to be castrated first. That bat thing is weird though, huh?

Pretty sure this new rule is for the average joe who doesn't know that knives aren't allowed on planes and get their SAKs and slippies confiscated.

OK, so the TSA is finally coming in to alignment with international knife regulations. But the restrictions!!

Blade must be under 2.4" - OK
No locking blades - OUCH!
No "molded handles" - WTF??

About the only knife I know of that fits this might be a SAK.

Do you know of any knives that might fit this requirement?

Screw a knife, why not just bring on the allowed 24 inch bat. LOL

On a more serious note, I'm pretty sure this revision is to stunt the huge flow of key chain knives that they confiscate by the thousands.

And the blade can't be >0.5" wide.

Gotta see if any of mine qualify.

These conform with international regs.
