TSA baby-steps it towards more rational policy concerning knives on planes

In advance of the upcoming changes to TSA’s Prohibited Items List, effective April 25, 2013, the guidelines below on small knives permitted in carry-on luggage are provided to help passengers prepare for airport security procedures prior to checkpoint arrival.

TSA continues to evolve and strengthen its multi-layered approach to aviation security – through better technology, expanded data analysis capabilities and an enhanced understanding of current intelligence. The decision to permit certain items in carry-on luggage was made as part of TSA’s overall risk-based security approach and aligns TSA with International Civil Aviation Organization Standards and our European counterparts.

Small knives permitted in carry-on luggage must meet all of the following requirements:

Permitted::D

The blade must be no more than 2.36 inches or 6 cm in length – from tip to where it meets the handle or hilt
The blade must be no more than ½ inch in width

Not Permitted::mad:

Knives with locking or fixed blades
Knives with molded grips
Razors and box cutters

If a passenger is unsure if an item meets the above requirements, TSA recommends that the item be placed in checked luggage.

The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items through security checkpoints.

By looking at the SAK shown on TSAs website as being allowable(it looks like a Tinker) I wonder about it. How exactly are the blades to be measured? At first it appears a tinker passes but if measured from handle to tip it wouldn't. Also, what about something like a Swisschamp? With a saw and file etc. are these allowable? Lots of questions that need answering I guess. Personally I'd be happy if a SAK Classic or LM Micra is permitted.

What? I can't take a Kizlyar onto a plane? What do they have against Kizlyars?

This is discrimination.

I still think this is a trick to get you to bring your SAK onto a plane so that they can confiscate it and sell them on NTSA sales on eBay.

F'n finally, a foot in the door.

But using emotions as an argument for keeping razors out is insane. It also means I can't fly to my friends wedding with my DE shaver.

I was watching the news and this news popped up. The blade has to be 2.5 inches and there can't be a locking mechanism. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO which knife are you guys gonna carry on your next plane ride?

Good news for all you folks who carry peanut style traditionals! Now we can take em on the plane! woot.

lets hope this actually sticks around and gets implemented.

Thought it just said no fixed blades when they said the blade has to retract. I'll have to recheck it. But anyways I was thinking a spyderco bug.

I'm still glad!!

Oh and ya know this is like the 6th thread about this to day:thumbup:

Actually, you can - you just have to pack it in one of the bags you're going to check in and not a carry-on.

I just got off the phone with Spyderco's outlet store. They have a set of slip joint knives, three of them, for around $30. Non lock back, two out of the three knifes are short enough. My set is on the way.

Not so fast my knife knut friend. Based on the examples above... those knives all have "molded handles." They have the same handle shape as the Spyderco Ladybug clone shown in the third image.

i love knives but this is a terrible idea, please tell me what has changed from now and '01 when they were banned? nothing, knives are still just as sharp, we need to keep the airways safe, this isnt the way. if you need a knife where you are going, dont carry it ON the plane, put it in your luggage and thats that. get it when you get your bags. you wont need it on the plane, 2.3in is no good for self defense, what are your gonna need it for? to open chips? man up and get a grip. no way a knife should be in the cabin.

My brothers college professor claimed he brought a bowie knife on several flights last year in his carryon and no one said a thing. I mean he is a professor, but still...pretty unbelievable.
