Tweenahs - New Pictures, specs...

it's going to be many months...

machax first. soon.

Is anyone else anxious to see more pics of the tweeners?!? Maybe next to an ESEE 3 or 4?

From the specs we have so far, the thickness of the drop point (.165?) would be in between the 1/8 (.125) of the 3 and the 3/16 (.188) of the 4. Blade length would be just shorter than the 4, but will a slightly longer cutting edge when you consider the choil. I'm really curious to see how they compare. I've never been an ESEE handle hater, but the tweeners look..... comfy.

Now the BK15.... I don't even know what to compare it too.... in a very good way.

the BK16 fixes every "shortcoming" of the ESEE4. no choil, longer handle, slightly thinner, so theoretically "more slicier".
you can ask Moose & Ethan -- I have big paws -- and the tweener handles felt glorious. (even better than the TKC G10 for the ESEE4)
when you pick one up: angels will sing, the sun'll come out, and there will be a silly grin on your face.

You have overjoyed me Vik, I think i might cry ;-)

I trying to win a Machax on the bay right now. It would be my first. I miss the Facist cat, and yes I've been drinking.

if it's a camillus model, i wouldn't bother spending too much on it. they suck. in a month or so, potentially, you'll get a good one for less.

which model did I see Ethan using in a vid on YouTube I think it was a equiptoendure video

it looked almost new so I would guess it was a kabar

That was a proto Kabar, and the one that finalized the design. We've used the hell outta that thing at E's place, through two Gatherings and an ESEE Campout. Plus, E has had it riding on the Gator for most of the summer and spring, keeping his road clear of eye-poker branches.

So far, I'm liking this Machax more than any of the others, its lighter, thinner and the grind is higher on this one. Cutter, oh yeah, chopper, bet your ass, and it still feels like a knife, in the fact that you can use it for other stuff. Like cutting up meat.

Dang! I just read this thread and me wantie. All 3 look awesome, but I might have to get the 15 and 16 myself. That is some sweet steel right there. Will definitely keep an eye on this waiting ever so patiently for my chance to pounce. Then there'll have to be special Tweenah beat up sessions. Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait.

I love my Machax, which is Camillus. Are you able to say what you liked about the new one? Which is best?

Thinking about thickness...

Common sizes in which knife steel stock is sold (of course Kabar has market clout and can get/make whatever they want):

3/32 = .0937
1/8 = .1250
5/32 = .1562
3/16 = .1875
1/4 = .2500

I'm a big fan of 3/32" - 5/32", and those small variations make a substantial difference depending on size of the knife and height of the grinds.
3/16" is actually REALLY thick for anything shorter than 5 or 6 inches of usable blade.

I figure 5/32 plus 'paint' would come out pretty close to the 0.165" figure being tossed around, and that seems juuuust right for a Becker. I'd use 5/32" or Aldo's 0.140" 1084 if I were making them myself, and I'd want a Becker/Kabar-branded knife in that size to be on the burly side. That's one of the appeals.

Dunno if the Tweener vs. Esee thickness specs being tossed about are bare steel, with-finish or what. It makes a difference of a few thou'.

it was awesome to see him in action with his design but i think i am going to pass on the machax, i already have a hand forged khukuri i dropped 120 on

but i do see a magnum tweener in my near future maybe summer 2012 for a nice camping trip i also plan on buying my brother the clip point tweener because he refuses to replace his 5 buck cheapo timber wolf knife

i only have the one camillus model. if i could score one NIB for $50, i might have two.

otherwise, all but the latest proto i was gifted with are PRE Camillus models, most of them are Cincinnati models, some of Becker Knife and Tool originals, the rest Blackjack - the last Blackjack model (with grey epoxy) is WORSE than the Camillus model (terrible grinds), but i gots it cheap.

the new KaBar model is thinner than any Machax before (about .200 iirc) vs nearly .240 to .250 of older models. not a lot, but it makes the blade faster, and you can do snap cuts easier. it has a higher flatter grind and should be quite slicey.

the older models, esp the VERY old models with hard-chrome were basically hand convexed at the factory, then plated with chrome. sexy.

later models with the black parkerizing/phosphate-bronze had flatter grinds, but very high. Camillus must've copied the last generation of Blackjack with the poor fat low grind, it seems, when you compare many of those to the previous old ones, it's like night and day. they're almost blunt.

two more weeks to SHOT... then we'll hear stuff. see stuff.

just for lols, i'm sure someone at SHOT can take all the tweeners and line them up with all the ESEE for a photo comparison jubilee
