Speaking of Knifemaking WW. I posted in Todds forum, some sketches I am having Todd look at to see if they can be turned into proper knives.
Let me know what you guys think of the pair.

Man its been a long day of emails and back and forths... Barely got any shop time today but I did manage to make a set of white, gray and black resin tweener handles and a typhoon kryptek sheath. Hopefully I will have it finished tomorrow.

Here's the start. Drill press and O1 steel should get here in the next day or 2. Ordering the grinder and belts on Thursday.

That's the last time your shop will ever look that clean... Once you.get that itch and finish your first knife, nothing else will matter.. LOL

Saw that earlier on your instagram, looks pretty sick man.

I read the best way to quench carbon steel blades is human flesh. :D

only for water/brine-quenched steels. you won't be starting with those.

For real though i read this .... "2 parts Automatic Transmission Fluid, 3 parts Parrafin wax, 3 parts Lard (home rendered or store bought, your choice). Heat 'em all up, mix well, and cool. The wax tends to harden the whole pan into a solid block that should, at room temp, allow you to press your finger

exactly. DO NOT EVER DO THIS. Jumping Geebus on a Pogo-Stick, please please please do not do this. Covered very well in Shop Talk, but I will reproduce the reasons here:

1) you have no idea how one ATF varies from one bottle to another.
2) it's toxic
3) you have no idea of the quench speed
4) you have no idea what steels it's good for because you don't know the quench speed
5) you really don't know the proper pre-heat temperature
6) it's toxic
7) IT'S AN ENORMOUS PILE OF UNNECESSARY WORK
8) buy Canola oil for simple carbon steels like 1084 - it's well tested by respected smiths, and is the proper speed for the steel. it's cheap, non-toxic, available, has a higher flash point, and you must pre-heat it to 135F.

There.
FOR THE LOVE OF DOG, NO GOOP!!
Wasted a month of my early work and several blades on that trash.
Fortunately I was able to have a good attitude about it and keep going.

I believe it LOL

Plus im not a neat freak anyways, cleaning the shop up will be the last thing im worried about until the wife complains or the landlord comes by :D

I had a buddy in Texas that use to say a clean shop is one where no work happens LOL

No worries bud, im not going to be doing any heat treating at all. Sounds like a bad idea though, #2 and #6 is good enough reasons for me LOL

Ill let PHT handle all that stuff. I wanna design and make them but there is way too much involved with the HT stuff, plus even an expert maker can screw his stuff up doing the HT. Id rather have that done professionally.

I have mad respect for the people doing it all themselves though. Just not what im personally interested in, at the moment anyways... 5 years from now who knows.

Sweet setup 710!!

I'm liking the new pot set.

Any experience with Vortex? Thinking about a nice variable high power scope for my 308 AR build. Don't really want to shell out 1500+ on a scope though, and Vortex has some options in the 500-700 range. Had given some thought to the Leupold Mark AR, but that's set for the .223, I think, and would thus not be as fitted for the .308 round.

I've not personally used a Vortex, but have heard good things about them. The two that I was referring to are the Konus M30-series (actually an Italian company now that I think about it) and the Pride Fowler Revolution series (my preference of the two). I didn't realize how close 5.56/.223 and .308 (along with quite a few others) are in ballistic coefficient until I looked at the PF scope literature. As a result of the similarity, out to 5.56 effective range, the range markings will be pretty close regardless of caliber. You can find some images on-line that compare some common caliber trajectories, and many of them are remarkably close at reasonable ranges.

Dex is a real stand up guy, he was willing to talk to me for almost 2 hours about all kinds of stuff. Extremely nice of him. And I really suggest that you guys go check out his store

People asked me what id use the mini hatchet for.....

15000171019_0cbaa141c4.jpg

Blinded it with the Fenix PD35, then while still alive I took a single guillotine swing and off goes the head.

Before anyone thinks i was being cruel to an annoying fly... It was no more cruel than a fly swatter. If anything he was being cruel to me by not leaving when i asked him nicely to get out of my house LMAO

Edit: To be completely honest i tried this several times during the last couple days, but they kept flying off before i got the little sucker!! Its easy to blind them with such a bright light, but movement too close to them makes them try and get away so i had to be quick about it.

Showed this to my 10 year old. He really wants a video of you hunting a fly down and giving it the chop. Gotta admit, it does sound pretty awesome.

Also, congrats on the shop! Looks like a great start.

All I can say about neo-tribal work and stuff like using old lawnmower blades, mystery metal, goop, homemade cobbled-together whatnot etc is that if S really does HTF, it may come in handy if that's truly all you can get. (and if you have experience with the good stuff, you're going to be able to figure out how to best utilize half-vast stuff fairly well... the reverse is probably not the case) Obviously people all over the world still use knives made that way all the time, and they do work. Then again, a broken piece of glass will cut stuff, too... for a while.

There are plenty of variables and things that can go sideways on you when trying to make an excellent knife under the best conditions. If at all possible, reduce those variables by using the finest known materials and procedures you can wrap your hands and brain around. That's not "snobbery" as some people will claim; it's just plain easier to get great, consistent results.

Thanks man, and i sent you the link as well.

Also im not sure how i would hold the camera, the mini hatchet, and the flashlight or i would definitely make up a video of it... Of course id prolly have people complaining its cruelty or something. Personally if i had to choose out of the 2 id rather a quick dispatch with my head cut off than being smashed into a table/ floor or whatever but thats just me.

But if you have a very bright flashlight with a concentrated beam, try shining it at a fly sometime when it lands... You will be able to walk up and smash it without much issue. They freeze when blinded almost like a deer... I was doing that at first then decided to try the cut. I didnt get it on the first try... In fact i tried several times over the course of a few days before it worked. The mini hatchet is rather small and i used it with just my thumb and pointer so being accurate and quick with it wasnt a very simple task LOL

Getting a little better with the electrical etching. Still not perfect though. I need to try some PCB etchant before long and see how i do with it over the electrical way.

Left side is the one i just did, right side was a couple months or so back. left of my fingers i was attempting a etched finish look, but it didnt come out like i had hoped.

Yeah, but what you didnt tell anybody is you are sitting outside the girls club and what your doing is illegal. SICKO!
It's only illegal if caught! It's like speeding.

Is that GREAT? No. But im still going to enjoy the hell out of trying to turn steel into sharp things :D
Dude, that is actually kind of nifty, I'm guessing the hole goes in the "top" of the blade where the hand sits?

Wet t-shirts you say? And there is no photographic documentation? If I were a mod, I'd ban you for life.
WHOA! I never mentioned T-Shirt! That is something COMPLETELY different.

So I went and picked up my sister from work, then we went grocery shopping, and I came home and cooked. I made steak fajitas and jalepeno poppers. The poppers were fresh jalepenos, stuffed with Boursain cheese, and wrapped in bacon, then grilled for 30ish minutes... In the rain.

For pictorial proof I have this!
