I'd be willing to bet op won't be back....he only has 7 posts to his name, all within this thread. He probably wanted some sympathy and just stopped replying when he saw he wasn't going to get it.

So I picked up the knives told the guy of it would be a dollar an inch. So he told me that he had already gotten them sharpened and the chef knife did not cut right. I explained to him that it had to do with the belly of the knife.
That's when he should have walked.;)

My advise ( which means diddly squat ) is buy the guy new knives , tell him that you are very sorry for the misunderstanding and chalk it up to experience.

Didn't OP say that the guy wanted them polished? That's what I read.....

If so, then the customer got exactly what he wanted. He just didn't know that polishing would to to the Damascus finish and the logo.

I explained to him that it had to do with the belly of the knife. I asked him if he would like me to fix this so that it would feel right when used to cut and he told me that he would. I explained to him that it was alter the side of the knives.so after i tell him it will be 20 for the fix he say he wants them all polished. After I polish the for free. Then he tells me that I ruined his knives because the shun symbol is now gone from it and the wave lines on the side are less aparent. He then tells me that I need to either replace those knives or pay him for them or he's going to take me to small claims court and report me to the Better Business Bureau. Help I'm already doing the buffing for free which is already taken about 12 hours on the three knives not sure what to do with this guy but I feel like charging him for the buffing and telling him that if he doesn't want to pay it then I'm just going to hold on to it - until he does. how about that what do you think PS I also told him about the blueing and the FC method for making the waves more apparent and told him that I did not have the FC but you get some although I admit I have never done this process before how about it?

So either he didn't know what polishing does to Damascus, or maybe he meant that OP should just polish the edge? I dunno.
Either way, poor communication is the culprit

If this "Knife sharpener" knew his business, he would have told the customer buffing out the finish would ruin the value and appearance of the knife. He should have known better. He is not a professional, and had no business touching that knife.

I didn't say OP was right. He's a terrible "knife sharpener" and definately should have informed the customer. I' was just trying to find an explanation for why things happened the way they did.

And it's worth noting that the customer DID choose to send his knife to a "knife sharpener" that was only 2 days into the business.... Now whether or not he was aware of that fact, I don't know. But if he was, he definately bares some of the responsibility for this fiasco.

But you're right. OP should never have touched the knives with his level of experience.

You ruined his knives. You don't know enough about knives to be operating a business related to them. Replace them, learn from it, and move on.

This sums is up very well, and you are being way too polite!
