Two For Tuesday

A pair of fiddleback apprentice knives
Valkyrie knives punk & a forty point Oscar

Here are two Hiking Buddies made in contrasting styles:

One is a rare classic old school scandi grind with nice spalting and contoured bone handle scales in 3/32” SFT O1 steel.

The other is a newfangled bolstered version with wild looking “Starry Night” Shadetree burlap in 1/8” SFT convex grind A2 steel and nice spalting also.

They are both recent additions for me. I appreciate the differences and unique character that each one has.

Oh man. That old school bone handled scandi is something special. Thanks for sharing Phil!

Sorry for the cell phone pics but I haven't had time to shoot them properly. My personal favorite model.

I have just picked up the convex so I haven't had a chance to use it much. But I think the scandi gets scary sharp and holds an edge really well. The convex has some work to do if it wants to keep up. But I plan on using it this weekend cutting okra and making feather sticks.

JDog approved. Very nice.

Definitely some contrasts in those Hiking Buddies. Nice ones.

The J-Dog stamp of approval goes a long ways in my book.

Thanks Walt & Nathan! Jessie "J-Dog" turned thirteen last month and she is really slowing down. Even so, she always perks up to tag along and supervise all my knife related activities. I try to make the most of every day we have together and spoil her every way I can.

Thanks for the compliment Tod. I knew this one would catch your eye because it fits your Fiddleback collection niche perfectly. You and Nathan are the ones who convinced me that I "need" an old school scandi knife. I got to see and handle this knife at the Blade Show because the prior owner brought it along for show & tell. He remembered that I was very impressed with it when he decided to sell recently, so he offered it to me first. I could not turn down the opportunity thanks in large part due to the influence of you two friends whom I really respect.

Nice Carvers Bubba! I think that burlap handles (for grip) and a scandi grind (for bite) would be my preference if I was to buy a Carver in the future as a dedicated woodworking knife. As hasco said, congratulations on picking up a rare duo. Thanks for the photos.

Cutting Okra! No way... I told my wife the other day I would like to pick up a Carver because I thought it would make a fine garden knife.

One of my newest Runts and a Valkyrie Punk in Purple Shadetree.

Nice duo Bud! I like the way that the white pinstripe lights up the Jade G-10. You already know that I like the bolstered Electric Plum Shadetree burlap. Your "small" knife collection continues to grow and impress all of us with its size and scope.
