I'm assuming that this might be a risk, if you happen to rig up a battery powered electric blade that shoots out plasma bolts for your Tyrant Katana. Who doesn't need a electrified katana like so?

Wait a sec, what, your Tyrant doesn't have plasma bolts? Hunter already made mine with that feature 😎

Only question about carbon fiber:
I remember on road racing motorcycles they made a carbon fiber seat pan.
It sat on top of battery. It caught on fire and was smoldering mid race which hindered riders performance.
Is this a factor in this handle material ?
I can imagine that having your seat pan catch fire while going over 200kmph would cause a loss of focus. But if you’re buying an 11” katana handle to sit on it, you might have strayed into the wrong forums.

I find the the Tyrant Waki option very interesting and I would second the vote for multiple options for handle material. I feel like a nice natural micarta would really pop while still standing by for a good beating. Potentially in for both based on the renderings. Really liking the direction of your design process so far but in the end whether or not I find the design aesthetically appealing to my personal taste is a big factor.

I’ve read from many makers that a long and skinny blade is difficult to heat treat. Do you think the sword would be less prone to warpage during heat treat if the blade was thicker and also be better suited to chop down trees and cinder blocks?

In my opinion, more than anything a blades strength actually comes from its height and the I beam effect.

Ive made several big choppers like the Tyrant Bolo from 3/16th thick steel that I really believe are close to indestructible.

For the Bush Waki, Im going to make the blade taller than a traditional wakizashi to give it more of the I beam effect.

As for heat treating, thickness does help, but I even had .317in thick Tryant Bowie prototypes warp.

Correcting warpage with a peening hammer is actually pretty easy now that Ive gotten the hang of it. The challenge will be seeing if I can do it with a big fuller and a big bevel. not as much surface area on the flats to tap.

I may end up having to heat treat these myself with a plate quench and clamped temper. We'll see how they turn out. I was finally able to get all the Fell Beasts straight and they are only 6 in shorter and much thinner than the Bush Waki, so I feel somewhat confident.

Interesting, I was not aware that a blade’s strength comes from its height. I’m not familiar with the I beam effect as well.

I do trust you are able to correct the warpage, since you have so much experience.

Thanks for the info!!! Hope to get on the preorder soon

I certainly hope I can get them straight! All I know is I won't be sending anyone a warped blade. I'll get the renders for these posted soon followed by the Pre-order. I haven't been this excited for anything in a long time!

I hope so too and I believe everyone will be happy with your swords and workmanship. We’re all excited too !!!

Finalizing the details on the handle.

Here's my concept and prototype for the full coffin handle with guard and pommel (prototype pommel not pictured, but drawn)

I've gone through several different variants but I think this is the best one. One thing I didn't like when playing around with a guard is how the hand gets pushed up into the steel guard when choking up on the handle. Its quite uncomfortable and I think this is a bit of a flaw in the entire classic wakizashi/katana design. I've added a small forward guard from the handle material to help with this front grip + give everything more strength. The guard will be locked in place against the scales.

The coffin scales will be secured with small corby bolts and one screw in the center of the handle which will feature a slotted hole to allow easier takedown and assembly. (getting the rear tang hole and front hole to line up perfectly is harder than you think, a small slot allows for the handle material to expand and contract without hurting fitup or making it difficult to reinsert the screw.

With the pommel, I'm planning for it to go over the scales like a butt cap and hold everything in place with a single pin/ screw. With this pommel, we can also cheat a bit and add length to the handle.

VAMOS!!!

please note the tang will look much better than this. (everything will look much better)

Thank you for the updates!
I really like it!

Huntsman Knife Co. LLC. Huntsman Knife Co. LLC. - you mentioned that you'd need at least 20 per-orders for the Katana, currently you have 7 here who have said they'd want one, how long are you leaving this up for consideration, have you posted elsewhere/have interest from other places, or does this mean that this project won't move forward? I know this is in concept phase, and I do want this to come to light, I'm just curious.

Ive decided Im going to do the katana no matter what. Its a passion project. So even if the pre-orders fall short, Ill make it happen.

Interesting, never heard of bow tie oval. When I google bow tie oval, it shows diamonds. Hopefully the handles are made of diamonds too 😉
Sorry I misunderstood the question. The handle contours will have an oval type shape. The overall shape of the handle lengthwise will have a front flare and a rear flare with a slightly more narrow waist in the middle which in my mind, makes it look like of like a bow tie.

Well... I've done 24K editions... I guess a diamond edition is the next natural progression 🤣

It seems to me that the katana doesn’t need a lot of initial interest. Especially since the decision has been made to create it. I’m confident that people will show interest once they see it. Moreover, I can already see the interest growing 🤔. I think it will end with, for example, people seeing a live prototype that, say, smashes a kitchen stove 😁. That will spark even more interest. A 24K edition katana paired with a black samurai kimono!

No worries, I’ve handled modern Wakizashis and Katanas in the same past, but most of them had flat face slabs with slight contours. Those were always uncomfortable and unwieldy.

I am glad you’re putting more emphasis on designing a comfortable handle and also improving on older designs such as adding the flares.

Haha, the diamond edition sounds dope!!!
