I believe this has been covered before, but I think this thread might be fun.

What is the ugliest knife you´ve ever seen?

I do not mean cheap POS can metal and function is not included, which means that an extremely ugly knife might still be a very good user, so this is by no means intended as an insult towards the companies who produce the knives mentioned.

My list (in no particular order):

- Becker TacTool
- Spyderco SPOT
- Spyderco Starmate
- Busse Assault Shaker
- CRKT Prowler
- CRKT Kommer Alaska Bwana

Your turn, folks.

Sebenza.

Someone's bound to say it anyway, so I got it out of the way in the very first response to your post. :p

Seriously, the Sebenza really doesn't have any "wow" appeal to me, and shallow as I am, a quality knife that makes me go "wow" will often times follow me home, as opposed to a knife of similar quality that makes me yawn when I see it.

As far as truly butt-ugly knives go, I would have to second your Bwana choice.

AMEN! Personally I don't like the looks of the spyderco's. Some people may hate me for that but thats just IMO.

Hello,

I just hate the scales!! The Cold Steel Vaquero Grande is not the best looking knife ever designed either. Just about anything from John Greco is as ugly as sin too, but they are brilliant knives.... proves the old adage... don't judge a book by the cover!!

Yup, I forgot to mention the Warthog, truly an ugly piece...let me add the Spyderco Cricket to my initial list, too. I simply dislike that blade shape for aesthetical reasons.

I also never thought of the Sebenza as an impressive design. It might be perfectly put together, with a great lock-up and excellent materials, but it looks a bit boring IMO.

grecos are great and i love the looks of the raven...:D

Although I don't know what it was called, one of the ugliest knives that I've ever seen is the Outdoor Edge/Spyderco collaboration. Yeah, that one. With the all stainless build, extra corners, and a diamond shaped Spyderhole. Truly an ugly tool.

I also find most Striders to be very ugly. Abrupt corners, tiger stripes, and rope handles aren't real visually appealing.

Most anything Spyderco, especially the Bob Lum series. I know, many people like them. But I think much of the attraction is based on the fact that people know it's based on Chinese designs, giving it the sort of Oriental feeling that everyone seems to love. Without considering what kind of nasty knives influenced Bob Lum's designs, I still think that the Lum knives are ugly.

Sebenzas strike me as boring as hell, but not ugly. They're almost there though.

MOD Scorpion.
MOD Massad Ayoob Razorback.
Two weird, thin, flimsy-looking knives.

Slipjoints. Can't stand the wooden-handled traditional look, maybe I'm too young and don't have the historical background (e.g. seeing them at Grandfather's house) to appreciate them.

To each his own but let me correct you on some misconceptions since I sense a bit of cultural naivte. First, I doubt folders go deep into Chinese history. I think Spyderco and Bob Lum take a few marketing liberties at trying to create some mystique by calling Bob Lum's folder, a Chinese Folder.

Also, look at the Bob Lum SP46. It's not that "Oriental" looking.

The blade is tanto-like which incidentally is a Japanese blade design, not Chinese. Even then, it's a modified, or Americanized tanto. Also the scales don't exude any kind of specific cultural influence.

I will agree with you on the ugliness of the MOD Ayoob which has as much character as a plastic exacto knife.

I'll throw in the plain Sebenza and old Benchmade Pinnacle. Two slabs of mottled grey titanium isn't going to make it into the Museum of Modern Art.

Hmm, I should have said "Oriental designs" as opposed to "Chinese designs". I was thinking of the Lum Chinese when I typed it. I agree that folders don't go deep into Chinese history, but I was referring to the wide leaf-shaped blade that was inspired by traditional Chinese knives (I've looked around, never seen them before though, must be a rural thing :)).

So my main points are:

1. This milking of the "Far East mystique" annoys me, just as it annoys me when I see the product of other cultures labelled as "interesting" (a euphemism for "funny"). Then you have the whole problem of people pretending to be interested in the culture, when in fact they're going after the Westernized bastardizations of a culture's products.

2. I think Lum's are ugly. Just my humble opinion.

Someone already mentioned it, but (my) Cold Steel Vaquero Grande is one butt-ugly knife...But "ugly" in a "good way".:).

Also, my Spyderco serrated Massad Ayoob looks pretty "ugly".:D.

Thank you for mentioning striders. I don't know how anyone could see them as an attractive knife. Whats with the tiger strips?

Yeah, the CS folders are pretty butt ugly, though I won't mind taking in a vaquero grande and giving it a good home.
