Ultimate Survival Knife - The Blackbird

That video was way too long.

154CM makes it way too expensive for an Ontario. Everyone has what they like in a blade, that is fine. I don't think the handle/scales fit with the blade very well. It's like you slapped a Kephart blade on a modified RAT 7 handle. Just by looking at the way the scales were designed and finished I could have told you that was an Ontario blade.

That sheath kind of sucks. Looks better than the Becker nylon sheaths but not by much.

$189? Surely you kid. That's semi custom price.

Best of luck with business and sales though.

Looks like a solid design. I like the blade shape and large handle, though I don't like the price. Being that it's from Ontario, a 1095 version at half that price would be a nice option and one that I might buy. Don't want to come down too hard on the knife, but at almost $200 I could get an excellent custom form one of the many awesome makers we have here on BF. Just sayin'

+1

I was hoping it was a carbon steel blade, and lower than $100. Well, it was a nice idea, but I would rather own a custom for that cost.

How can a knife called Blackbird compete with one called Screaming Eagle from TOPS !

My next design is going to be called the Scary Quail.........any makers up for the job ?:D

Wow how did you know? I have a new production coming out Jan 2011 called the Scary Quail! You nailed it, here is a pic of me holding the knife. Its still in the testing stage so I can't reveal close up shots of the knife at this time.

Edit: As for a comment on the knife :D It looks like a good survival knife, but at that price there are a ton of options and I would probably go in a different direction.

LOL !:D:thumbup:

I watched the video up until he showed the knife. I have been getting the secretive e mail about this thing for weeks. I am feeling kind of let down. First, I really don't like the handle.
Second, for the price it should probably come with a production level sheath in his style. I really like the looks of his sheaths, and I can't imagine why this knife wouldn't come with one... Well, I can think of one reason... $$$

What he said. I think it's an awesome design, but it always has been. A Kephart with a RAT handle (which I don't care for anyway) isn't anything revolutionary and I'd rather get one from a custom maker as well or one of the production companies that gives scale options. I'm happy that he got it into production and it hope it does well for him though.

Is $189 the MSRP or street price. If it's MSRP then the street price would be pretty reasonable. As long as the heat treat is done right it seems like a good blade. Scales need more contouring though.

Looks like 100 other knives out there, I am not very impressed. Give me an NWA Sierra Scout or Fiddleback Hunter any day over that knife.

Kind of disapointed he didn't do a Hedgehog sheath for it.

Big plus one! 189 isn't a bargain for an Ontario IMHO. But when you look at the prices of his sheaths I didn't expect it to be a bargain. It's a big Kephart in a nylon sheath.

Hedgehog sheaths look great. There are alot of guys on this forum who do great leather work though.

I just hope his knife is as long lived as the guy is long winded :D

I have been a Carbon Steel fan for many years, but after buying, and using blades in S30V and CM 154, I am becoming a convert to quality Stainless. $200 is not really a high price point.

I would have designed a more rounded handle, and would like to see the blade at least an inch longer. I would miss the jimping on the top of the blade.

I like it. Would rather have carbon though. Looks good to me.

Meh. It looks pretty functional. Strong tip design. Decent grip. Nothing particularly outstanding - which is no indicator of how well it will serve in use. Probably a good field knife, but just another face in the crowd. A very large crowd.

 I told you the name is oh so subtle, right?

Whenever the scary Quail comes out, I am in, sight unseen.

Now I have to work on my design, The Bifurcated Lumbricus, it's super secret chopper.

I lovvvvvve his sheaths but his whole marketing approach with the secretive emails and the exclusive clubbiness crap is getting to be annoying. He pulled the same stuff for the BK2 sheath at least at the end there was a cool sheath. This knife ehhh not so much.

I think he really likes the sound of his own voice for sure tho ;)

Boy did you ever nail the exact thought that went through my head when I first saw it. Seems like a personable guy and good presentation skills even though it seemed like forever before he showed the knife......Lets just say when I go to stripjoint, I don't expect it to take 6 songs before I see some booty!

I think it has a weird blade to handle ratio, kinda like it has the size handle of a ESEE 6, on an ESEE 3 blade.
