Umnumzaan vs. Sebenza - my $0.02

L4S, the weight factor is very little between these two. Large Seb weighs in at 4.7 ounces and the Umnum at 5.0 ounces, so we are only talking about .03 of an ounce. It does not come with tools for diassemble as those will be available seperately. From what I can glean from talking to CRK, they are putting together a kit that includes the tool. Haven't heard when they will be available, but I hope soon. Of course Piter has a good idea with the tool he constructed.:D

thanks guys... looks like I gotta get this one. Anyone know who's gonna have the next batch first?

Well... I've been waiting for my LDC about one year, maybe a bit longer. I mean I was not desperately looking for one and rather I wanted one bad and finally I spotted LDC09 available from one of us here. So I decided that it was my time...

Piter, good trick on the improvised takedown tool! Made one last night and took my Umnumzaan apart to check it out. Went ahead and cleaned it up and then applied miltec lube as that is all I'm using now. Put it back together and this is not one where you can tighten down the pivot all the way, like you can with the Sebbie and it's bushing. The pivot is a big one though which should improve the opening action and the strength. In fact it looks to be the size of my Strider AR's pivots. I did notice that CRK used loctite on the pivot screw, but I didn't use any when I put it back together, though I did make it a little bit tighter, but not much. I'm going to see if the screw begins to back out before using any loctite, but I figure it will stay put where I put it.:D:D Just a great knife!!:thumbup:

I have both and i have to say while the sebenza is a great knife, the umnum is just awesome; think of it as an upgraded sebenza. Kind of like the next step up. Its like when cars went from carbs to fuel injection.

What trick? Couldn't find the post?

I have another (cool?) idea and you'll see soon :D

My idea is to grind the sharpened clip off :p if only I could decide if I actually like it or not. I'm undecided. It just puzzles me why a sharp edge would be protruding from the back of the knife when closed. Though admittedly I haven't cut myself or more importantly, cut the pocket off my favorite pair of old jeans yet :p

Is there any blade play? If you tighten the pivot screw, does the action get tougher and tougher? If you loosen the pivot, does blade play develop?

Thanks

Thanks Piter, nice review and as always lovely images!

pbubsy, did you get my email? If so, how did it work out? To answer your question about the pivot Django. As far as I can tell, if you completely tighten the pivot screw the blade will not open. That being the case, I assume, if you leave the pivot loose you will be able to get some blade play.

Great review Piter !! I always considered the large sebi as a suit knife...i like a large knife personally...i got a ummy commin in a couple days and i cant wait...personally i think Chris did good with it.

I got to handle one the other day while fitting her up for a sheath,
the pivot is quite a bit larger than the end of the knife, more so than
the Sebenza, but as pointed out, it is one sturdy knife! well, both are actually,
but the nod goes to this new boy on the block for sure, also I like the longer
blade's straight edge with the curve coming closer to the tip.

My only nit pic would be the sharp swedge on the tip, I often press down on the
back of a knife for cutting through some material and that would be a bummer
to slide onto that!

for example, two weeks ago I was installing some of our equipment and had to cut
a section of 4 conductor power cable, thick stuff, pulled out my Swiss Army Tool
and had to press down HARD on the spine of the knife to push cut through the cable,
which it did, but if it was the 'Zaan I could have been in a pinch...

If I did get one, I'd be rounding that rascal off for safety sake pretty quick, others
for Tactical reasons may want it to be more edgey, that's fine, but for me I would
find it to be a danger...
