un-Official Modded Kershaw/ZT Thread (Scales, Regrinds, Frankensteins, Dye-Jobs, etc)

How much practice does it take to learn to RIT dye? I would love to do another red Echelon.

Not really "practice" so to speak just trial and error. Nice thing is it's kind of hard to screw up. :) Heat the solution, throw in the parts, stir occasionally, and look for your preferred depth of color.

I finished dyeing the Ranger Green scale to black on my 0301 using RIT powdered dye. I used a few cups of water, about four tablespoons of salt and brought the water to just about boiling. I suspended the scale in the solution and moved it around every five to ten minutes for a little over an hour and a half and then let it sit in the solution overnight while it cooled off. Took it out this morning and rinsed it off and I think it turned out great!

Jumping on the dyed Echelon bandwagon... of course you know what color I went with.

I think I'm gonna have to get an eschelon just so I can dye it:-)

Thanks! I am happy with the way it turned out. I had to keep it in the dye bath for 12+ hours to get it that dark though!

Really? Wow, with heat on it too? I probably had mine in the pan for an hour. Probably wouldn't have taken that long but I kept turning the heat off on the pan because that's what I've always done with nylon/delrin.

Yep, heated the whole time. I put them in around 9 PM and checked on them every 30 minutes or so until I went to bed at 1 AM. At that point they were barely even tan so I decided to cover the pot and leave it on simmer over night. I pulled them out when I woke up around 9:30 and was happy with the color, but I can't believe it took that long. Word to the wise, use dark colors or be prepared for a LONG wait!

Did several 0550 scales this weekend...trying out a new technique...I guess you can call it "the fade". Its a combination of my faux bolster pattern, with an Anso bottom, however the top color (blue) fades slowly from black at the bottom to blue in the bolster....I'd be lying if I said this was easy....I have one in green/black too:-)

was a busy weekend, lots of colors for the 0550!
Began with the toxic jumbo anso....the orange/black was a spare piece that I tried my first fading & contouring on....from there I went to the green/black. My initial plan was to just have grooces for each of my fingers...from there i added some on the opposite side to off-set it...the fade came natrually, as I was creating the faux bolster, I just experimented with a few different files & grades of sandpaper. The blue/black was last, putting the different things together...They are still a little shiny from final cleaning...hope you like color:-)

P.S. I'll be posting a youtube video featuring them tonight!

So In the spirit of this thread. Had an idea while looking around for presents for the guys this year. I was looking at the select fires and seen they were 3 and 3/8" blades. I remembered the blur also has a 3 and 3/8" blade! I was wondering if it would be possible to put a blur blade in the select fire? Like an s30v blem or something. I have a blur but not a select fire yet. If anyone has both try and take a look to see if it might work minus the detent

Here's my Kreined Blue Ti Bump. It shows up on occasion in other threads, but thought I'd put it in the PROPPER thread.:D
