Uncommon Handle Material - Pics

That is fan-flippin'-tastic. Seriously, I think I have to have a knife with paturewood handles. Very rarely do I see something new and get that feeling that I just have to have it. This is one of those times. That handle is gorgeous, and knowing what it's made out of makes it even better. It looks like it could be a burl, but instead it's made out of something that most people would consider refuse. It doesn't get any better than that.

Visit a zoo. You can't kill a rhino or elephant any more, but maybe you can get some poo.

Stabilized cactus

Any idea what kind of cactus? I tried googling it but all I can find is "cactus juice" which is used to stabilize woods. My guess would be some kind of cholla, since they often have "trunks" like trees. It wouldn't be a saguaro.

What incredible knives! That checkered ivory is amazing! That red catalyn is not to be missed either, they are both awesome!

It'd be a pain to deal with, but that looks exactly like the inside of a dried up prickly pear cactus.

Made for some very nice looking scales.

15 years ago there was a modder in Australia that used epoxy and kangaroo dung; seems like he called it RooPoo slabs.

I don't think I'd want a knife with stabilized dung,just sayin' lol

Yes, it might behave like old Cell and start outgassing!:barf::D:D

There have ben some bizarre and interesting materials on show in this thread. Are there( TRADITIONAL) knives with stone handles at all?

Catalin was invented in the 1920s and was sometimes called Bakelite but this is wrong. Bakelite has filler....normally sawdust. Catalin is hard, polishes easily and is stable compared to celluloids, etc. It comes in almost every color in the rainbow but must be recycled from old pieces...vases, desktop items, but some blocks are still available almost always in Germany and Romania. Care must be given when penning so that it does not spider web around the pins. Comes in solid and marbled colors.
