Underrated Knives

The Douk Douk.

Everyone who owns one knows the power it holds.

Blade play? Yes!

Rust bucket? Oh yeah.

Safety hazard? You know it.

All that, and it will probably still outlive me, no matter how much I use it. And for $15! Yay.

Cold Steel Medium Voyager.
It was one of the few competitors to the Spyderco Endura.

Lighter weight (1.8 oz!)

Comparable steel-VG-1 is said to hold an edge better than VG-10(According to Ankerson's tests)

Strong lock- Said to have been made in the same factory as Spyderco Lockbacks.

One of the most under-rated knives I think is the CS Pendleton Hunter. One third the price of an F1 and 99% as capable. Better sheath also. It makes a superb bushcraft knife.
Kabars Dozier folders are one of the best sub $30 folder out there.
Spyderco's Persistance, Tenacious and the like are very good also .

I'm really happy with my Kershaw Skyline - amazing knife for the money!

Also liked my Buck Vantage Pro large enough to order the small version too. Great knives at the price point.

Al Mar knives

Fox Cutlery

Mercator K55k--I have one without the cat picture and carbon steel blade, and it is one of the best knives I have.

Would have to agree KaBar Doziers pretty much had no competition ever since I quit buying LST's ( at one time my gift knife of choice) -the Buck Vantage is now real completion for their K-B Doziers -around the same price for the base model - and I haven't handled or bought a Vantage that wasn't right. Made and Made WELL in the USA!
I'd also second the Kershaw Lahar - these seem like a lot of very solid knife for pretty reasonable money. Have never understood why the beat on it 'till it breaks crowd have shown so little interest in this design.'Course - from Kershaw's point of view - maybe that's nothin to complain about?

I find both these tools to be underrated...

But since this is about knives....my CRKT corkum first strike 2705.
440A steel, nothing fancy....but what a solid performer ...especially when it comes to wood processing. Sharpened pry bar comes to mind...and with its convexed edge it really can go the distance.

the discontinued spyderco d'allara drop point is one of the most underrated spydercos inmop. i think it it was even better than the manix 2.

I can think of 2 right off the bat:

Spyderco Cricket - Small package but it has so much cutting power it's amazing.

Kershaw Shallot - Such a terrific design, and the steel has never failed me (14C28N). It takes a screaming sharp edge so quickly, anyone can sharpen it with ease.

I always thought Buck 300 series didn't get much glory. I carried a Wrangler (big stockman) for 20 years in a pouch hip, when everybody else at work had 110's, and complained about their edge holding. Same steel though. Different grind? The 300's are flat, no hollow. I can't imagine that would be it.

Then I carried a simple carbon blade Boker "Electrician" pattern knife for about another 10 years I liked even better in that pouch. Superb sharp and holds an edge very well: walks and talks: what's not to like (except I don't see them being made anymore)?

Now retired from stripping much wire I carry a Squit-p4 Leatherman on my keys. No glory there either but handier than my SAK (Victorinox) "Tinkers," which I always thought could be VERY sharp for stainless (as another under-rated steel, at least the way they're doing it).

Gerber Freeman fixed blade in S30V. I sometimes wonder which I like more - hunting or getting a chance to use it on an animal.

Yes, but it's a real pocketful...a very wide knife that takes up a lot of space.

well i have one sitting next to the very popular ZT 0200, and they are almost similar in width, the spyderco sticks out just a tad more near the hole area because of the hump. the d'allara is slimmer and lighter though, i dont find it cumbersome to EDC at all. in fact its much easier to EDC than the ZT.

if you can still find one, i recommend it. the knife itself has an interesting story behind it, as it was created after a police officer who died in the world trade center attacks.

there were also series of special d'allara knives that actually came with a tribute to the twin towers built into the handle, which you can see pics of in this thread on the spyderco forum :
