Unfolding: The World of Art Knives

That's wonderful! Im' so proud to have some of my knives displayed in such a fine book, sorrounded by great knifemakers and collectors! Congratulations David, the book looks amazing! I can't wait to buy my copy!

Cheers!

As you have not yet seen the book, Rodrigo, here are two (of quite a few)
of your beautiful creations that are displayed in my book...

BTW, a copy of the book will be waiting for you at Tim Hancock's table.
But if you want, you can buy some more copies for your friends at home....:D

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Another of the contributing writers, and my close friend, Don Guild has more than a few copies. He is sending me a copy of this book to admire and enjoy. :)

I'll be sure to comment. Looking forward to this.
I've just rec'd a copy. I flipped through it very briefly last eve. I am so busy with meetings and work that I need to spend some quiet time to evaluate fully. This weekend I will be away on a trip and will carry this with me to peruse.

My firsthand impressions support how David feels: It's his finest work to date.

My own work has matured over time, and I see how David's usage of Eric and Francesco's photography has also found fresh ground. Compelling visuals. I haven't read a single word, but I'm sure I will like that, too.

Thanks.

When I started custom knife collecting in the '80's, there were the Weyer books(first one published in 1984, the only edition available at that time in full color), the Annuals, some scattered, but excellent titles here and there....and that was IT!

As the industry has grown and matured, we have been blessed with a good number of top quality makers, collectors, photographers, authors, leatherworkers, engravers and so on.

I really don't know if we are in a "Golden Age" to bring up a recent thread, BUT, I do know that things have gotten better and better, and show no sign of getting much worse.

Thanks to everyone involved in this fine book(I think it is David's best myself....BUT am heavily biased...'cause I'm in it), and thanks, Coop for the comments.....fwiw, you are one of my personal favorite knife photographers.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Got my copy today. The book looks GREAT. Lots of eye candy and great knives. Its so large that I didn't start reading it yet, but tonight I will. Right now I am just looking at photos.

Congrats to all who were featured (Steven, Kevin, etc..), and the makers in it. Also to David Darom for producing a beautiful book.

Hello All....I have read through all the post on this Forum and agree with every one about David's Latest Book, The World of Art Knives....I received my copy Monday the 3rd and it arrived from Israel in perfect condition....Having gone through it as time allowed I can only marvel at the creative Genius and pure Passion David has put into this great production....All 272 Pages are alive with Knife Beauty and Knife History....David's ability to Meld Knife Maker with Knife Collector is Fantastic because one could not exist with out the other....This Book belongs in every Knife Lovers collection and will again have raised the Bar..... Edmund Davidson

Wonderfull book of some of the most incredibly beautiful knives. Photographs are really crisp and lovely. Inspirational stuff. This is what dreams are made of.

It WAS a very personal process. I thought I could knock out 2,000+ words in a month or so, as anyone who frequents BladeForums can attest.:D

It took 4 months. My wife did the proofreading for syntax and flow, and Phil Lobred reviewed it for "knife content". David asked me for 4 pages of knife photographs, and that was absolutely agonizing. I have so many friends that make knives....who "makes the cut", and who doesn't?
I promised I would read and comment on STeven's contribution when I would make time to engage in it. Making time to sit and read isn't quite as easy for me as I thought. Busy gets in the way.... ;)

David's choice to include Steven in the process was another quality insert into the volume. STeven's account and explanation of 'Knife People' puts into words what many of us take for granted, experience with understanding, or simply see without knowing.

He give a personal account of his own growth, and then shares and explains the tenets that make KP KP; Honesty, Education, and Drive.

I agree on all counts. It was an fluid read and carried many features I will remember often.

I am in the process of reading further: Don Guild's writings have a completely personal flavor to them, and I enjoy his knowing wit and wisdom.

David's assemblage of photos and articles is simple, yet incredibly complicated. Like a masterful knife or athlete, it only looks easy when completed.

A fine addition to my shelf.

You can order it from Tim Hancock right now, he has a supply of them. The book gets introduced at Blade, actually.

This book is another stunning edition in the series of Dr. Darom's books.

So far I have only had the chance to look through it from cover to cover, but not to read any of the sections. Just given the titles and the pictures I know though that this will once again be great reading.

I have all but one of Dr. Darom's books and 2 copies of some of them (1 for reading & sharing with visitors, another for safe keeping in case some don't know how to share properly :p). I got two copies of this one before even opening it (at the Solvang show).

As with the previous books, the pictures are first rate and the knives featured are once again diverse and fabulous.

Great job and I hope there will be future books to enjoy.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am glad that you liked
what I did...

I shall now continue working on my new series of books
"Custom Knifemakers of the World" of which I have
already created the two first volumes, on Edmund Davidson
and on Tim Hancock, thus covering the worlds of an Integral maker
and of a bladesmith.

This series is planned to cover 4-5 additional major knifemaking disciplines
giving an in depth coverage of what modern knifeart is all about.
Hopefully I can come up with one volume every year... :)

In between I plan to do one more large general volume on
modern custom knives, with various exciting articles and a display
of some additional major collections.
A sort of "The World of Art Knives II".
I schedule this book to be introduced to the public in 2013...

See you all at the BLADE Show!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

David-

I frankly think the above would be the perfect title for the second of a series. The Howard Carter series of three books on the opening of King Tut's tomb, for instance, were published one volume at a time in each of three separate years (1927, 1930 & 1933). Makes sense to me.

Sorry to be late for the party!!

Got my copy a while ago and went though it in stages- so as to fully apprecaite what is in there and not to miss anything.

Clearly another outstanding piece of work- another work of art, to be sure.

Knowing a bit of what goes into photography and setting up a book like this I marvel at how after all these years of putting out these anthologies how David cuts no corners
and spares no expense to allow up to have these dramatic publications at our disposal which honor our passion, hobby and livelihood like no other medium can. The Written Book- after all these years, she's still the one!

Mazel tov, David and I am looking forward to seeing you in Atlanta next week.

By the way- I opened my signed copy of "The Great Collections" and read David's note to me with a smile on my face. The date was April 8th, 2007.

He said, in part,- "the last volume in this adventure in the world of sharp art that we love so much...."

HA!!!! Last volume?? :D

I'll see you there for sure, David!

Best,

Bob

David, I can't make it to Blade after all. Sure will miss seeing you and the grand entrance of your wonderful new publication!

Best of Luck - though in this case, it's just a wonderful eye and hard work! Thanks for allowing us the benefit of your abilities to create a work of works!

Best,

Bob Betzner

You can still find copies, but best to check directly with David Darom to see if he has any from the original run. Some of the other printings did not present the quality of initial printings which were controlled by him, as in this work, "The World of Art Knifes".
