Now you're talkin'!

Every time I have pulled out a knife in public that had any patina on it, people looked at me like I had two heads! ("Don't you ever clean that thing!?")
And the bigger they are, the looks get even worse.

Now this old Western would probably have people fainting!

Sweet, I love these sorts of knives! Will post mine in short order. The Navaja is a "traditional bad boy knife" for sure. Also, a nail-Karambit.
We used to wear an onion tied around our belt, as was the fashion at the time...

Maybe in your neck, but some old timers in NY may still see that K55 Mercator and consider it a hoods knife, because it was very popular with gangsters in the 1960s-70s Bronx, that Mercator. Some people in Algeria may fear the Douk-Douk as it was used to inflict extreme terror before. cutting off noses and stuff.
Of course, without that history and knowledge, without being in the regionally specific area... of course these are just regular knives. I carry 'em as low-key, use-anywhere simple carbon steel knives, and actually class them in with the Opinel, MAM, Higonokami, etc, by basis of being an everyman knife invented from between 1869-1929.
Nice Laguiole!
Thanks for that, I saw the list and went hmmm. Around here the Douk Douk is the new hipster blade of choice. I always like getting more history . The k55k I use as a Sunday chore /beater knife and now I ll feel a little rebel tomorrow.

In all honesty I cannot recall a time I've ever been given grief over any knife I've carried... Living where I do and always being in work clothes probably helps.
I put my old douk douk into semi retirement after 2 and a half years of pretty heavy use. The El baraka is now usually in my pocket.

Question:
Would "Polite Society" (or "high society") carry  any production "worker's" or "sportsman's" pattern such as the Barlow, Canoe, Moose, one or two blade slipjoint folding hunter, sunfish, etcetera?
I can see them  maybe carrying a production Congress, "Eisenhower", or fancy teardrop with a Wharncliffe blade ... if they carry anything larger than a lobster or peanut pattern. Maybe they have the butler or maid carry it for them so as not to ruin the lines of their taylor made suits and/or $3000 blue jeans with so much as a single coin in their pocket?

......perhaps not so much 'bad boy knives', as pathetic public perception - well, at least that's what we often experience here in UK anyway..!

"Who are you going to kill with that..?" can sometimes be the retort when pulling out a straightforward pocket knife
Usually said by a fool who then attacks a parcel package with his teeth.

The dumb like repeating talking points. It makes them sound capable of composing a response.

Not sure.
The intent of this thread was not to contrast the knives of the working and wealthy classes, but instead to showcase knives which have nefarious reputations, are rightly or wrongly associated with criminality or rebellious movements and lifestyles, or are just too stabby-looking to be appropriate for most social situations.

This seems like an odd thread to have in the Porch. Maybe it's just me but on the spectrum of politeness I would put basically ANY traditional knife firmly on the "polite" end. When I think of "ungentlemanlike" blades I picture things like this:

Also any knife that includes the word "Zombie" in its name and/or includes blood spatter as part of its styling 😆
