"upscale" or "upgraded" Rat 1? Will we ever see more scale and steel options?

I am really hoping there is a Rat 2 version of this upgrade. I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on the Rat 1, even though the price is great. But a Rat 2, I'd buy 2 in a second.

Just found out about the D2 upgrade, ordered the CF version. Thanks for making a great knife even better, Ontario.

Does anyone know if the D2 will slowly phase out the AUS-8 offerings or will they both continue to be produced?

For those of us that know nothing about knife steel, with D2 now being available is there any reason anyone would want the AUS-8?

Well they're limited edition, there's only 800 of each scale configuration.

AUS8 is a little more fine-grained and less wear resistant, so it's easier to sharpen. A lot of people think it's hard to sharpen D2.

Anyone seen any information on the hardness they're running the blades at?

well the CF versions were taken off KW's website. I hope you all got one in time.

I didn't think the CF's would last long, even though it's an overlay it does look very good.

Wife texted me to tell me I had 2 packages delivered today. One is my Vic Pioneer-X and the other has to be my CF Rat-1. I'm stoked.

Got it. Nicely constructed, blade centering is nice, feels good in hand and deployment is nice and smooth.

That being said, I had never imagined how heavy a 5-ounce nice really feels. In addition, I was hoping for textured peel-ply CF as found on my Chaparral. This is of the the very smooth variety. It's OK, I guess. It's just not what I was expecting.

I like my orange one if I want new scales I'll get them made as I can get exactly what I want. Mine is nicely centered and smooth I need to break the lock in little better

Mine came in the mail today too. I was really surprised at the quality of the knife having never handled one before, lives up to the reputation. I reprofiled the blade to 15 degrees per side.

This is what I meant by stay tuned. They might turn up on other sites, too.

To answer a few questions:
- RAT IIs are not coming any time soon. I view this as something of a pilot program though.
- Carbon Fiber over G10 was the only way to do these without the price being absurd. G10 is a good quality material as well; it really is designed to be a great knife without the price getting out of hand, we aren't cheaping out on you.
- Someone mentioned making upgraded parts available - that has come up around here as well. Nothing imminent, but you may see that in the future.

Thanks for the update. Bummed about the Rat II editions coming any time soon but still glad your doing the Rat 1 and that it may show up elsewhere.

Any possibility of just doing a G10/D2 version? No CF overlay. That would be hard to resist. Some camo and bold color G10 scales would be amazing.

Awesome stuff. Will the other sites' have different variations?

I really like the upgraded materials. I don't think CF over G10 is a cheap out, I just personally don't feel it was worth the up-charge versus the standard handle. I have many cf and cf laminant knives. The largest difference between yours and those is the liners. I believe you used the same liners for the regular vs G-10 handles. That makes adding scales much easier than the linerless models that other MFR's make.

It looked like KW had everything. There's some backstory to these coming out, but the short version is that nothing happens quickly with the RAT folders. There's some lead time there.

Naffarious - I didn't take offense, just thought it warranted a comment.

aleforme, I love the idea, but again, not in the works right now anyway. Something like that might come up in that "parts" conversation though. It's a half formed idea at best (we've gotten as far as "it's not impossible")
