Urban Dad needs a knife recomendation

I would go with the Benchmade 940 and get the 810's deep carry clip. The 707 is nice in pictures but not really in the hand, the 940 and 943 are MUCH better.

Interesting...

I have large hands and I find the 940 to be awful...yeah its longer than the 707 but the ergos are just off for me, like it doesn't fill the hand enough.

Since the op said he doesn't like the blade shape of the 940, the 943 is worth a look.

I really liked the way they feel in my hand.. What are your thoughts on the caly 3.5?

I have never handled one so I can't say. I will say that for the price the Delica/Endura are hard to beat. For $150 you could get one of each and still have some money in your pocket.

The 943 is the ONLY knife I have ever regretted selling/trading away.

Lots of great recommendations so far--here are two more: Cold Steel mini recon 1 (3" blade, drop point is an option, though I prefer clip point), and Benchmade's Bone Collector 15020 or 15030 for the mini... the first is less $$ than the latter, the BM has the better steel (though you mentioned that was not really a big issue for you), and both are tough, reliable, and will get the job done. The walnut scale option on the Bone Collector is great.

Spyderco Gayle Bradley - best ~ $150 knife on the market today
Spyderco Caly 3 - great ergos, great size, looks amazing, steel may be challenging to sharpen
Spyderco Paramilitary 2 - everybody's favorite EDC
Spyderco Stretch - workhorse of a knife, light with a great blade shape and user friendly steel

I have all four of these. I carried a Caly3 for several yrs, but you might want the Caly 3.5...longer blade. And the ZDP-189 blade-steel if you can swing it.
The Gayle Bradley is M4 steel and wonderful...the best of these four for anything more heavy-duty. May appear too tactical for the sheep.
The Paramilitary 2 is a wonderful knife, and the compression lock on this knife is outstanding; just fun to operate. About $130 in the most common S30V blade-steel.
The Stretch is a great knife also; available in various blade-steels. Often used for kitchen-duty as is a great slicer. Get the ZDP189 if you can find one affordable.
In terms of weight and sheeple-friendly, the Caly 3 or Caly 3.5 or the Stretch would be my reco. The PM2 is in-between, and I suspect that the Gayle Bradley is the heaviest by an ounce or more.
In general, carbon fiber is preferred over FRN (fiberglas-reinforced nylon) for strength, durability and "grippiness" factor. Carbon fiber may not be available in all of these four, or may possibly be too expensive for your budget.
Good luck, friend. Welcome to a fun club.

get it, love it, then have rival make you a set of custom scales like mine :)

You'll still be well under budget and CPM-D2 is no slouch

Here's mine after rival got done with it

I'd like to echo the recommendations for the mini griptilian, caly 3 and paramilitary 2. The zdp dragonfly is also a very nice knife, but it's much smaller.

Kershaw Skyline is slightly over 3 inches (like 3 1/8 or something) but is also slightly broad, has a flipper, G10, is lightweight and lastly is ~$35. Might be worth a look

I agree. I love mine.
Well made, and very reasonable.

So many knives recommended are above 4oz. :/

Skyline or a G-10 Leek, as mentioned...Spyderco FRN Delica...and EVERYONE should have a Benchmade 530; ultra slim, phenominally lightweight, crazy sharp, pointy, good lock, and you literally won't notice carrying it.

Good luck finding that works best!

Man you guys are pulling out all kinds of things for me to drool over! So I checked out the Paramilitary 2 online (no way to put hands on one) and it looked fantastic along with the caly 3.5.
I happened across a video on youtube for an upcoming zero tolerance... Hinderer designed 0566.. Its not out yet but fits the bill in every fashion except there is no weight listed anywhere.
My original quote for under 4 oz. may have to be stretched so thank you for being concerned with that J_Curd.

Ok so I think after doing a bunch of watching of videos and researching here is a list to narrow down. I LOVE all of them however I have put some feedback in the ()'s

Benchmade Griptilian full size drop point (awesome blade shape. maybe thick? might be a little big scary to sheep. need a deeper clip. cheap feeling handle?)
Benchmade Sequel (beautiful. on the small ish side. maybe not as gripy as I want?)
Spyderco Sage 3 (the blue one with ball lock. Beautiful. shortest blade I would want. Awesome clip)
Spyderco Caly 3.5 (Very cool. awesome clip Something about the overall shape looks more practical than pretty)
Spyderco Paramilitary 2 (Awesome. Looks long and tactical maybe scary for sheep dunno. would have to find deeper clip)
Spyderco Super Leaf (very similar to PM2 maybe less tactical looking? maybe the blade is too broad?)
Spyderco Manix 2 (similar to super leaf)
Zero Tolerance 0566 (pre order and WAIT maybe heavy with ss lock side)

Mini Grip 556 BK I believe would be up your alley. Or perhaps a 525 if you can find one.

I'll second the Spyderco recommendations (although it seems you're well on the way there :) ) A Delica is a great little knife.

Actually, get any of them...you won't stop at one :)

Uhg.. I am very afraid of going down this rat hole... my experience with multi tools tells me that it will. haha

I'm completely biased and you need a Para 2.

Also I have a 707 sequel and its my favorite 3" knife.

If you go over the $150 and get a 940 or 943, you will not regret it I promise. Ignoring my Para 2 bias, a 940/943 would be ideal for what your asking IMO.

And on the more budget end, check out the Kershaw Oso Sweet. Way pleased with mine for the price.

I have also noticed a trend here.. I have been drawn to stuff over 3 inches and there are MANY recommendations for my use that are only 3 inches. Maybe im trying to get to large of a knife?
