Urban Dad needs a knife recomendation

Mini Grip, small Sebenza, Spyderco Delica or a whole boat load of Kershaw or Cold Steel knives.

As a father with young children, when I know I'll be out in a public setting with other families I leave my work edc knives home and bring a Victorinox Swiss Army Adventurer. Handy, locking blade, inexpensive, and no one says a word, unless it's to ask if I can open something for them. Not as cool as all the other suggestions, but it works for me.

I will certainly take some pics for you all. I have to warn though I was a cheepo and went with the free you will get it eventually shipping. Haha I'm stoked!

Oh man you should have said that on the cheapo side the Crkt's can't be beat. My favorite small edc is a framelock Crkt drifter. 13 bucks shipped! Kershaw chill is like 15 bucks! Crkt makes a very classy lockback called a lake but it has a lawks on it which is no bueno if you ask me.

Benchmade Mini Ritter Griptilian
Benchmade 943 - different blade shape than the 940 with black anodized scales
Benchmade 950 Rift - may be too large for your needs
Spyderco Gayle Bradley - best ~ $150 knife on the market today
Spyderco Caly 3 - great ergos, great size, looks amazing, steel may be challenging to sharpen
Spyderco Paramilitary 2 - everybody's favorite EDC
Spyderco Stretch - workhorse of a knife, light with a great blade shape and user friendly steel
Spyderco Sage 1 - this might be the perfect knife for your needs

Yes, it appears that all of my suggestions are either Benchmade or Spyderco, but there is a reason for that. If your budget is $150 or less, these 2 manufacturers offer a very solid, long lasting knife that will serve you well. There are many other options out there, but my experiance with these knives and these companies has been spectacular. Not to mention, if you purchase from one of these companies and are not happy with the knife, you can easily resell it as they are always in demand.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to get.

This is an outstanding list and analysis. I support these recommendations.

I GOT IT! It is certainly sweet on first impressions.. And it's officially MY knife as I have already nicked my pinky with it being dumb. :banghead: I was going to post pics but I guess my account us not allowed to.

^^ you can post pics, but you have to go through a place like photobucket.

Congrats on the new knife!

Opinel.

Seriously.

I absolutely defy you to get the blade to wobble under normal hard use. Heck abuse it. I dare you. Risk free.

Here's a drop point Opinel I have going around in a Pass Around.

For urban/suburban use, one of the nice things is that the looks don't upset the locals at all. On the flip side, it's a darn tough knife. I've killed a bunch of higher priced Bucks. The Opinel out lasts them, no problem.

I am also a gear junky that is always looking to refine my EDC with the next cool thing.

2 things

A) I just thought the quote was funny as every time I refine what I carry, it's usually getting rid of things I don't need rather than adding something I don't need. :D

B) According to your needs and what you already have, you really don't need a knife. But if you WANT a knife just pick the one you like best. Just stick to the major brands and you'll be good to go.

I respect your post but I think it is shameful that we must think about what others may think before we present a tool. I too am guilty of this.

I own a Knockout, Caly 3.5 and a Griptilian 551 and all are great edc blades. If I had to pick one of those I like the grip but only maybe because it is the newest.

Can't go wrong with a Spyderco Caly 3.5. Light weight, 3.5 inch blade, wicked slicer, deep carry pocket clip, etc. VG10 is easy to sharpen and takes a very nice edge. A while back, there was a father who dispatched a mountain lion who attacked his young son - the knife was a Caly 3.5.
