That's funny, but could be relavent in NYC. If need be, one could probably forego dumpster diving and feed himself with a good wristrocket and some skills. The city parks are abundent with pigeons, squirrels, rats, and mice. There's also been some fox sightings, and I've seen a pheasant in Battery Park. :)

You better make sure it's really the end of the world as we know it. Wrist-braced slingshots are illegal in NYC and I think all of NYS. NYS allows slingshots without the additional brace. I don't know if NYC allows slingshots at all. There have been, literally, tens of thousands of drive-by wristrocketings going on, therefore, they had to be banned.

Your point is very valid. If there is one thing that most people can pick up at Wal-Mart and after a few days of practice, they can feed themselves, it is the ubiquitous and venerable .22 rifle and the lowly wristrocket type of slingshot.

Agreed... as I'd think that if I was intentionally looking to eat fresh killed NYC pigeon or rat, its pretty near the end.:)

I don't know of the legalities of wrist braced slingshots in NYC. I wasn't aware of any prohibition in the rest of the State though, as I had no problems buying them for my kids a few years back. Something to check.

Well, there are probably a lot of things that are illegal in NYC but that doesn't mean they are illegal in the rest of the state. But if it is illegal in NYS, then it would be illegal in NYC, correct?

I mean, beyond saying it's just stupid and infantile, there is nothing really left to say about it.

tyrkon-

unfortunately, the last i checked, LA county laws even prohibit a leatherman within 50 yards of a school or something like that. prepping for urban e&e certainly sucks in LA county.

what i work with now is a basic, light setup with routes highlighted on a map. since you're at a school, you could feasibly leave a bike locked up in your classroom or on the racks no? i have one at the office just in case i have to make that 30 mile trek home without a car...

consider a backpack in lieu of a messenger or sling bag. if you have a pack weighing anything more than 5 pounds, that weight can feel like a ton of bricks after fatigue sets in without proper weight distribution.

you should also try a trek from work to your home via walking/bike to see what's realistic in terms of what you can pack. that alone has helped me enormously in my preps. multiple routes are a good idea in the case of a natural disaster.

anglewood-

what school in south central do you teach at? i have family living about 2-3 miles northwest of the slauson swap meet.

I don't underestimate the suck of any area like that, but can you cite that and what do you base that on if you can't cite it? Are you saying that even a non-locking folding knife is illegal within 50 yards of a school? I have to say, that's pretty Draconian, but it would not shock or amaze me if it were true.

Well, as long as Groucho glasses are still legal, I’ll survive.

…Just trying to inject a little levity… This is big stuff, but generally it’s been my experience that New Yorkers are at their best during tough times. Some power bars, water, basic first aid, and the most important a calm cool head are really the best things you can have in these situations…. Ad to that a good small knife or multi tool, reliable small flash light and a usb thumb drive with your scanned important docs stashed on it and your pretty good to go.

Regards to pigeons and rats, you guys are right, that really is bottom of the barrel stuff.

NYDude,

I appreciated the levity, and will add some real-life levity of my own...

...when my Dad was high school aged, my Grandmother (his mother) suffered a stroke, so he was shipped off to live with his older brother and a bunch of cousins at the family farm in Englishtown, NJ.

My Great Grandfather, Dad's Grandfather, was your typical depression era Chinaman...never wasteful with anything even remotely edible. While at the farm my Dad ate a variety of wildlife. The only time the family balked was when my Great Grandfather cooked a skunk. No lie. My Dad to this day still eats stuff that I won't in normal situations. And yeah, I grew up thinking that Spam was some kind of treat that we only got on fishing trips...when Mom wasn't around.

here's the link i found. some of these laws i find to be preposterous and likely a knee jerk reaction to some act of violence carried out in this state. where it gets really convoluted is the rules about concealing folders, and multi-tools and their smaller counterparts.

hell, i'm reading it now and i'm still somewhat confused. could be all of that ipa i've been consuming though. shrug.

I knew about Quattrone, years ago, and posted that on my website.

As for the rest of it, stick a fork in the place, good grief. They wonder why they are going broke, it's bullshit like this and a whole lot more. Waste of time and money even putting forth those ideas, let alone turning them into actual laws.

I am from SoCal too. I was traveling on a freeway this week and noticed how much of our freeway system is elevated with roads underneath. I can see the San Andreas fault from my house. Many people can. I was thinking, should a large enough earthquake hit, freeways may fall. If freeways fall, the will land on roads. Travel will be trouble #1.

We have a ton of people here. I went to the store a few weeks ago and noticed how few people we paying for thier food with thier money. Our government was picking up the tab for many of the people. People fed by .gov usually have no preps and no backstock. Should an intteruption of "services" come about there will be some hungry, pissed off, ignorant people. These people may want your food. People are problem #2.

Freeways pancaked during The Northridge Quake. Back when it happened they said Doctors, Nurses and EMTs were amputating limbs without a local in that mess.

as shown with these laws and others regarding second amendment rights, it's apparent that organization on a state and county level is piss poor.

the best i can do at this point is try to aid fellow californians who are survival-minded. because there might be a time where modern luxuries won't serve us any real purpose and we'll have to put our survival skillset to use. all while dodging ambiguous laws until order is restored. a tricky feat indeed.

in times of natural disaster or civil unrest, i'd be wary of ALL people, not just folks who live with the government's assistance. severe emotional trauma can turn even members of upper crust of society into panicking imbeciles. i feel our best bet to help our fellow citizens would be to educate as many as we can to the survival preparedness lifestyle. that'd do a whole lot more once shit hits the fan than hunkering down and telling others to fuck off until things settle down. after all, that's why i frequent sites like these for. to gain knowledge and spread what little i have to others who will listen.

I'm just waiting for my fellow "anti-everything" human beings to realize that they're really the ones going back to live in the trees on this issue. They're the ones that are making us return to the time when we had to tear meat apart with our hands, etc. I'm waiting for some type of mass consciousness awakening to envelope the more stupid sections of the population and for them to realize that it is infantile to blame inanimate objects for the acts of careless people, criminal people and mentally ill people. I know, wishful thinking.

Very true.

There is a time to help people and a time to hunker down and tell some of them to screw, no doubt.

Along with my CC pistol and my AR7 I plan on adding one of the foldable slingshots and an extra band on my amazon wish list for my bug you bag. Rocks are plentiful. The bandanas and niosh masks are a great idea as well. I've learned a lot from you guys and my list continues to grow. I guess the hard part is not overfilling a pack. In my case it stays in my car so I don't have as many restrictions on contents, just size and weight.

Niosh mask is a good idea, same with foldable wrist-rocket.

I have some hardcore/punk DIY 'zines from 2003 - 2005 or so that had articles for Black Bloc protesters and preparing yourself for police interference. You can get some pvc pipe (I think it was) and fashion them over your forearms to help defend against nighstick or baseball bat swings. There was other things about avoiding gasses and such. Point being, there is a lot of literature out there about how to protect yourself, you just have to wade through the BS and take what you need for your situation.

Wrist brace type slingshots (wristrockets) are specifically outlawed in NYS PL 265.01
