Anybody know a good (reputable) spot online to find used bikes?

craigslist. Lots of deals on there. I have also seen many super deals on the evil auction site.

i second craigslist...:thumbup: the craigslist for Santa Cruz always has some really nice mtnbikes for sale.. definitely worth a look...

Otherwise cruise around any local college campuses. A ton of kids head off to college with new mountain bikes and then never use them. You might be able to entice a student with a fistful of cash.

Yea. I've been out of it for a LONG time. I've had a Trek, and a Specialized in the past, and I know enough to like Canondales, and Giants, and Fisher's.

Anyone recommend a nice bike from the lower end of the scale. Maybe originally 500-600 bucks, but now (used), in the 200-300 range?

You could get a badass redline monocog 29er for that much used. Not much more then 4 new. Other then that, you can get a Specialized Hardrock for 350-400 brand new...They are GREAT bikes... A used Rockhopper and if your lucky stumpjumper should be around your range too...

Lorien who is a member both on here and on the canadian community forum owns a bike shop and gives some really good deals, not sure how it would work out shipping etc though !

You neglected to say what kind of bike you were looking for. What kind of ridding, and how much do you weight?

I recommend a used Specialized. I've had three. My favorite was the old Stump Jumper but later I had a Rock Hopper and now I have very old Street Stomper which was an early one I snagged on ebay for $120 shipped.

18 speeds and great for what I needed.

I know you're looking to purchase online, I'd check in with your local bike shop. Sometimes they hold swap sales, I know the one I used to work for did at least 1 every year. I usually advise against purchasing a bike online, its much harder to tell what you're going to get and shipping fees on something like that aren't fun. Then you also have to get your local shop to re-"build" the bike which adds more to the cost as well, you could give it a go yourself though.

PS: If you're ever looking for a riding buddy let me know. I'm new to the Atlanta area and need to get back on my wheels.

One of my buddies has scored some sweet vintage road bikes for cheap on the auction site. I'm sure there will be some MTB bargains there as well. Times are tough and a lot of folks are liquidating stuff.... :(

Not many bike shops in the Atlanta area have great deals on used bikes very often. The best deals I see from a store are at REI when they do their super clearance, but the next one is not until September. Check Craigslist, Ebay, and Mtbr.com's classifieds.

Also, you are shooting for the wrong original retail price with your available funds. You can easily get a $1000 bike for $200-300. I got a used Gary Fisher Sugar 1 off of ebay for $500 ($3000+ original retail) several years back.

I'm on my second lower end TREK, think I paid about 400 for the one I have now and even with my 265lb butt and aggressive riding style, they've lasted.

As long as you go high enough in the product line to get a decent alum. frame, everything else can be upgraded fairly cheap and over time.

That is very true. I will probably snag a roadie off there at some point. I hate seein people have to part with their bikes. :(

Well I figured I drive an antique truck so why not an antique bike too! :D

Seriously it is nice. Heavier too so it seems to be one ruggedly built frame. You have a hard time even finding any write ups about the one I own now. I had to call Specialized just to get anything on it.

Here is the same bike I have only mine is a 28" frame. One thing you need to make sure of is to get the right size to fit you. A 24 would be way small for me. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/bik/1098048840.html

don't know if it's been said, but check bike shops for last years demo bikes. Now would be an awesome time to do so. i got a 3500 bike for 1500.

Just make sure whatever you seek, Fits you, or you will have wasted your time and money.

www.mtbr.com has reviews with original retail. It also has a classified section. There is some stuff on their exactly what you are looking for.
