Used Mountainbike

Call your local PD to find out when they auction off recovered/unclaimed stolen property. You can get some good deals.
Also ask them if they have any old police bikes about to be retired and inquire as to how to purchase one if that's possible.

andy iron horse is gone out of business and there is just to many great offers out there

Man that Y-frame is old school!! I can't tell you how many times I warrantied that frame, it rode great though!

Man, you guys are a wealth of 411.

I'm 5'10" tall, 180 lbs. My riding will be mixed. I want the bike to ride with my daughter, but I live right on a lot of woods, so I will be getting off the road when I can.

How does one tell what frame size he needs?

Oh yea. How do you use Craigslist. I've never had any luck communicating through there. Never scored anything!

WHat's your secret. I want one. The 4500 would trade up for a knife real nice...

Given your height I'm guessing a 17" frame would probably suit you best, but from one manufacturer to the next there are slight differences in frame geometry that can make worlds of difference. When it comes to mountain bikes I usually like to make sure there is at least 2" between the top tube and "the boys". That way if you have to hit the brakes in a hurry you've got some room to bend your knees before you end up causing yourself some serious discomfort.

Hell that'd be great!!! I'm going to pace a trade request in the exchange and see if someone wants a knife or so for a good bike.

Andy, you might go to a bike shop and get fitted for a bike. Find out what frame sizes in different makers fit you. If you just buy a random bike off Craigslist, there's no guarantee it's going to fit. And riding a bike that doesn't fit is a drag.

If you're willing to wait, many dealers put their bikes on closeout in the fall.

I wouldnt buy a bike sight unseen, I d definatly ride it first and look it over and test the fit. A couple inches between the bar and the ballz is great. Any more then that its too small, any less its too big. Thats just round about, but you can really get a feel for the bikes size by riding it when you go look at it.

Of course you have dealers!! Hey are you coming to Blade SHow?

I found a local bike shop and will visit them at lunch today. Maybe they have used stuff. I also placed a WTT tread in the exchange. Maybe someone wants a knife in return for a bike.

I have a lot more faith in the folks at BF than common net populus.

I'm 6'2" and prefer the 28" or so and for 5'10" I'd recommend a 26. Its not so much the height of the stem post you need to be concerned with on some models. Its how far up you can adjust the seat to make the bike comfortable and if the seat sticks up to the max height in the tube that means you'll probably crack the support main tube of the bike with the stress of your weight and leverage at the spot where it tightens and then need to weld it to repair it if it doesn't tear off and ruin it. You ideally want enough seat stem down in the tube far enough while still having plenty of height for your size. With some of the newer designed bikes the way they measure things is slightly different today than it was when the top bar was pretty much level or close. Now a lot of them for lack of a better description look like what we used to call girls bikes when I was a youth but its just the new designs. Used to be if a guy could stradle the bar on top and not have to worry about his privates standing flat footed it was considered a good fit. :D

26"!! I'm hearing that I'd fit an 18" specialized. Hmmm.

As far as I know, a 17-18 is a large. At 5'10 I think it would be a good fit. Id definatly test it out though.

17 is a small bike based on what I learned. I bought two bikes for my wife and I when we lived in Arizona. These were the first mountain bikes we owned. Both were Diamond Back Topanga models. I had a 28 or maybe it was a 29" because they had some odd ball sizing compared to others.

But my wife is 5'5" and she got a 17". I rode that one once or twice because I thought it was cool on the trails being that lower center of gravity. I broke the stem by cracking it just as described above because I had to put the seat up almost to where it ran out of stem to sit high enough for me and when I took it to the dealer in New Mexico where we bought it he told me it broke because at my height I was too big for the bike.

Oh forgot to mention this. After buying my StreetStomper on ebay my wife was asking what she could ride with me and we started looking. I ended up buying her a new Trek 19" and although I can ride it it is small for my 6'2" frame. I'm probably more like 6'3" if I stand straight but I've lost some height with the advent of gray hair. Seriously for 5'10" based on what I learned buying the bikes I've owned since they first came out you could really ride a 26" easy, and a 28" would work but be a bit on the big side. I am not sure if the way they measure things has changed or what because its sure obvious the way they make the bikes has changed some but I'd sure double check with a dealer before laying down hard earned money for anything less than a 24" at your height.

Good luck
