Used Mountainbike

Yes! I plan to visit the local bike store at lunch today. And the craigslist guy that responded is going to bring the bike around for a test spin (Specialized Rockhopper).

STR those would be some HUGE frames that you're talking about. What are you using for measurement? Most companies are measuring from the cent or the bottom bracket, up the seat tube to where the top tube meets the seat tube. A few odd companies do measure from the BB to the top of the seat tube though.
I'm 5'10" as well and a 17" frame fits me perfectly for all around mountain riding, for downhill I will drop down to a 15" on occasion because I like a smaller geometry for tight maneuvering.

Vret I learned what I know from buying the bikes I have so I don't know what you are measuring either. Here is the 17" frame DiamondBack Topanga I bought for my wife by my then 5'4" son at 12 years old who was still not quite as tall as his mom then. You think thats a huge bike? I'll see if I can find the reciept and dig up exactly what I bought. If I got it wrong I'll admit it and post it.

Ok ok, brain fart. I stand corrected. I had a 22" DiamondBack. It was 29 from the ground up maybe I don't know where I got that number. Been a while since I've thought of mountain bikes so forgive me. :D My bad totally.

Oh and the StreetStomper I have now is a 21" not whatever I said earlier. I found that paper work too. Ok chew on me now if you must. I think I need to stick with knives. :p

Now chewing out necessary. Good Lord, this stuff isn't easy, thats why I asked!!!

I really appreciate everyone chiming in.

The bike store had two I'm interested in:

Giant Boulder SE
Cannondale F8

(Man I really like that Cannondale. Time to sell some Busse's.)

Like Andy said, no chewing necessary. Just trying to make sure we are all on the same page. :)

As for the F8 vs the Boulder SE thats kind of a funky comparison. The Boulder SE is definitely a lower end model than the F8. If you like Giant and want a more similar comparison I'd try the Yukon. That should match up better with the F8 spec wise, after that its just a matter of seeing which one you like the feel of best.

I felt kinda awkward (large bike) on the Giant. But I was in a hurry and didn't get to ride the Cannondale. They don't carry Specialized.

Ok, that makes sense. I know some people measure bikes differant, but that sounded huge!!:D:thumbup:

No Specialized???? Thats mountain bike blasphemy!!!!:p

J/K, dude the F8 is a killer steed, you could do alot worse, but not alot better in that range.

I like Specialized myself. I'd say its the best one I've owned. The brakes work better than any of the others. The rear brake on the Topanga was crap. The Trek I bought my wife is ok but I'd take my Specialized even antique over it any day. In fact at this point I don't care what her bike cost me I wouldn't trade this Specialized for two of hers.

I agree. Specialized rules!!!!!! Man, you really need to snap some pics of that street stomper..Id LOVE to see it!

I'll throw in my 2¢ about sizing. The frame size, while important, isn't as important as the top tube length. It probably wouldn't be hard to find 2 18" frames that vary in TT length by an inch or more. As long as you have 3" or so of clearance when you straddle the bike you're good to go....worry about the TT more than the actual frame size.

I'll see what I can do. Here is my other bike though! Fiddleback you'll get lots of exercise on this model and cut your grass at the same time! I'll make ya a deal you can't refuse! :D

Seriously. Here ya go.

I've bought a new seat since these were taken. Not red! Oh and I've bought new tires and brakes too as well as all new cables. Still original other than the new original parts though.
